Topic: *TMI* - Haemarroids Posted: 04 May 2009 at 8:25am |
Ok, lovely side effect of pregnancy - can anyone give me any idea of what I can buy over the counter to help? I just don't have time to go and see my GP and I am not seeing my specialist till 26 May.
TIA!

Oh no hun That sucks, I have a small one, thankfully not giving me too much grief...yet!
Um, witch hazel is meant to be good, and you can get that from the chemist, I would just go in and have a chat to the pharmacist(embaressing as it is) they will be able to advise the best stuff to use.
I also find a warm cloth on my butt helps, and TMI but, the warm water from the shower hose directly on that area...I find it soothing when its very sore.

Oh no you poor thing! They are horrendous! I had a really bad case of them at one stage about 6-8 weeks ago. There are a couple of over the counter creams you can get from the pharmacy. One is called Anusol and I think the other is Proctosedyl or something. Just ask the pharmacist for help. It's a pretty common thing really.
The other thing that you can get to help prevent them are these tablets called Phloe. My mw recommended them to me since I have to be on iron tablets (which cause constipation) and they are capsules that you take to promote a 'healthy bowel' ie they 'loosen' things in your bowel to make it easier to go to the toilet (sorry TMI!).
They're basically kiwifruit capsules so you take them in place of eating kiwifruit (which I hate!) or taking kiwi crush or something similar. I've found them really good and just take one when I take my iron tablet and have had no problems since.
Good luck with it. It's definitely a yucky side effect of pregnancy and I can totally sympathise with you!

Belief it or not some vaseline will help. Have a small one myself and the one tip I found from a friend was vaseline. Some stuff over the counter is not that safe to use in pregnancy. It really helped a lot. I never had it with McKayla. Dont know why this pregnancy have to be so much different.

I went to the chemist and owned up to the problem (so embarrasing) and got some Anusol and some arnica cream too. Both are safe for pregnancy. I used some before and already its feeling way better. I got this last time too but this time I was trying to be sooo careful, I eat loads of fibre but it has still happened.
Apparently they can be bought on by diaorrhea too. Go figure!!

I KNOW what you got them from but I can tell you - it ain't that!!!
I learned you can get them with bouts of diaorrhea - I had a bad case on Friday (TMI I know) and its been like that since. Weird as.

OK I have to ask...how do you know I have them.
TMI!!!
Since talking iron pills I get a bit sore and often 'I see red'...if you know what I mean. I have seen to embarrassed to ask my dr. and don't have MW.

Witch hazel worked for me - as well as pelvic floor exercises - apparently they help blood flow to the area.

Constipation and diarrhoea (SP?) both can cause them but I suspect some people are also just more prone to them than others.

I'm just bumping this topic back up again For those of you who used cream or witch hazel or whatever, were yours internal or external?? I *think* I have an internal one (although it pops out every now and then) because I can't feel it, except sometimes after I've been to the loo. It's just the indignity you need when you're pregnant, isn't it? I'm kind of embarrassed to ask my specialist about it, although I have an appointment with him on Tuesday.

oh dear yes i got them bad after ds2 was born the joys of pushing a big baby out soo fast
and this pregnancy i have had them a few times right from day 1
make sure you drink loads of water to keep stools loose(i know tmi), when constipated avoid straining as that can make them worse.
not enough fibre in ur diet doesnt help so try getting some extra fibre (proberbly my problem) a hate bran but looks like it will be added to my breakfast.
atm they arnt soo bad thankfully.

I agree with everything rorylex said!
Drinking heaps of water really does help, and eating dried apricots and prunes.
I ahvent had any grief from my small one since the first tri, thank god. Im taking spatone iron liquid, but I have it in a big glass of pure orange juice and that keeps me regular most the time.

That's what I hate...I AM regular...go at least once a day (which is normal for me pre-pregnancy). I did have major probs with constipation early on, but since about 16w it's been fine....and I drink a LOT of water, and eat lots of fruit, have porridge with fruit for breakfast each day....
I'm not taking any iron supplements or anything either

The other thing I have learned is that diaorrhea actually irritates mine more than being constipated! And I too am trying to keep myself regular but not to the point of being too regular because of the above! The run in my family so I am doomed either way.
To answer your question Minik8e, mine were actually poking out a bit and do from time to time. I could actually feel it
I have found that the Arnica worked best for me for some reason. I didn't use it internally just on what was on the outside and would put it on several times a day when they were playing up.

I cannot recommend "Wizards Ointment" enough best thing ever, it is homeopathic and has arnica and witch hazel in it. Plus apparently it can be used on really bad nappy rash too. Any chemist that deals in homeopathic remedies should have it, its quite pricey but you would pay the same for things like Anusol anyway.
