Subject: Weight Gain during Pregnancy...how much?

Just wondering what the average weight gain in pregnancy is? Especially during the last 10-12 weeks.

Im 30 weeks pregnant, pre pregnancy weight was 68kg and are currently weighing 77.8kg. Two weeks ago at the midwifes I weighed 77.7kg so have put 100gm on in two weeks. Is this normal or on the small side. My midwife does say much. Also bubs fundel (spelling?) measurements are growing...

What have most put on?

I put on 20kg with my son. lol. Some of that was fluid retention though.

With this pregnancy i've put on 14kg so far. With both pregnancies i didn't put on much weight at all for ages then suddenly packed it on. Haha.

Some people put on lots of weight and some don't put on much at all. Your weight gain looks perfectly normal.

My midwife didn't weigh me but had she asked I would have declined anyway, so no idea how much I put on with DD2. With my first daughter though I probably put on about 15-16kg.

I put on a healthy 10kg in the first 12 weeks, then my weight gain slowed down heaps. I have the theory that in those first weeks, your body will put on what it needs to sustain a heathy baby and keep it "sticky". I was really slender so I needed to gain the weight.

ETA in total I put on around 25 kgs (didn't weight myself near the end)

I put on the most in the first 20 weeks (12Kgs or so) and hardly any towards the end. I'd say your gain is just fine. Remember it is really common to loose a bit at the very end too.

I'm put on 7 kg by 30 weeks, but I started about 5kg heavier than I should have been. My MW said I should expect to gain 10-12 kg given my starting weight. I imagine seeing as you started a bit lighter, you could expect to gain a wee bit more than that. 10kg by 30 weeks sounds pretty good for a little thing like you

I've put on 12kg so far and seem to be gaining 1/2 kilo per week on average (started taking note at 22 weeks) so I guess that means I'll put on 15kg all up if it continues at the same rate, but I like the sound of losing a bit at the end like Fiona says!

In the first 18 weeks I put on 10 kgs but I havent put any thing on since then so hope its slowing down now for a little while.

I know some of it was the bad eating I was doing but I seem to have that under better control now thank goodness

My MW told me the average is 12kgs But that was over the entire spectrumof women. So some women put on 10kgs, some put on 30kgs.

For my pre-preg weight and height I was supposed to put on between 11 and 16kgs. I've put on 16kg so far and have 10 weeks to go.

MW is happy with babies growth and doesn't even weigh me.

i put on 10kg right through but im overweight anyway. this time i have been told to put on a wee bit more cos my BMI was 29ish when i got pg which is smaller than last time. the MW who works at the gym with me said no weight gain first 12 weeks. 4-5kg second tri and 6-9kg in the last trimester. thats pretty rough though. the only reason i know my weights is cos i work at a gym and i kept monitoring it as usual through my pregnancy when i did my workouts. my specialist never even inquired about my weight

i put on 2.5kgs with my first, and with my second i put on 11kgs...and my specialist said to me they prefer that you only put on between 10-12kgs but every women is different.

Besides as long as baby is growing its all good...and the less weight you put on the less you hve to try and lose

I started at 54kgs, I now weigh 53.5, but in the first 10 weeks I lost 3kg so MW said the 2.5kg I have gained in the last 10 weeks is good and I am slowly gaining weight, I'm not tall or short (about 165cm). Baby is growing normally and she said I should get to about 58-65kg.

Inlove yep LOTS AND LOTS of swelling lol
It started @ 6 mnths and by the end I couldn't even wear jandals , I had straight legs from my knees down

Although the bonus was I lost 15 kg in the first 10 days or so

I know everyone is different but for me, I put on probably around 16 to 18Kgs both times. First time I lost it all + some within a couple of weeks. This time, at 6 weeks post partum I was only 1kg above pre-preg weight (and still am I think). I eat like a horse so for me most of the preg weight is (a) fluid....don't underestimate how much fluid is in your body and (b) comes off with breastfeeding.

Everyone is different but lots on doesn't always mean slow to come off.

I was 68kg when I got preg with Jake and gained similar to you. Was about 79-80kg when Jake was born and since he weighed 4.3kg almost everything disappeared within the first 24 hours. I was about 3-4 kgs above my pre-preg weight for the first 6 weeks then it fell off.
This time round I started at 68kg again and I've just hit 70kg this week (I'm 21 weeks) so not much gain again. Will wait and see what happens as I get further along

I put on 34.5kg but that was predominantly fluid (I put on 10kg in the 2 weeks before I had the girls). Best thing about it being so much fluid is that within a week or 2 of having them I had lost 20kg of it. I was 63.5kg when I got pregnant, 98kg when I had the girls (I got weighed in the labour ward) and after a cpuple of weeks I was back down to 77kg. So I still have a fair bit to lose.

I put on 15kg and most of that was put on in the first trimester because of MS And then in the last trimester a lot of my gain was also fluid retention. 7 weeks after birth I am now 3kg off my pre preg weight I read somewhere that 12 - 18kg is the normal range.

Wow, I never realised the body could hold so much fluid!

I haven't weighed myself since I was 10 weeks - I'd put on 3kg already at that point. I dread to think what I weigh now, I must have put on at least 10 kilos so far

I gave up weighing myself a few weeks back and weighed myself again for the first time in a month the other night.

I find I get myself quite distraught over weight gain as I am such an imagine conscious person, so have found it best to just hide the scales and avoid weighing myself.

I'll probably weigh myself once more in the next 10 weeks, then again when I go into labour so I see what my final weight is and can gauge my weight loss after baby is born.

I can really see the weight i've put on. lol. I lost all the extra weight really easy after Kaelen was born. All i did was breastfeed. So hopefully it'll be the same this time.

HI, i think everyone's circumstances will be different. I understand as a general rule they suggest that total weight gain for the average person (i.e someone who has a BMI of between 19-23) should gain 11 - 15.5 kilos. If you start out underweight or overweight (against BMI measurement) then you will either have to gain more or gain less.

I started out at 59kgs, and by week 16 was 61kgs. My BMI is 19 though, so ideally 10 - 13kgs is enough for my body to give baby what it needs. Compared to the next person though it will be either more or less for them, as differences are inevitable when it come to weight gain.

At the end of the day you just have to eat what your body craves, I'm tryng to be as sensible as possible, as the old wives tale that we are eating for 2 is so wrong! Luckily for me i haven;t craved fatty food, although now that i am in my 18th week, i have been snacking more....and chocolate is a must have after dinner! JavaScript:AddSmileyIcon('')

In the book - 'What to expect when expecting', they have provided a breakdown of weight gain - I found this quite handy to understand my weight gain...and future weight gain: Baby = 3.3 kilos, Placenta 750g, Amniotic Fluid = 1 kilo, Uterine enlargement = 1 kilo, Maternal breast tissue = 1 kilo, Maternal blood volume = 1.8 kilos, Fluids in maternal tissue 1.8 kilos and Maternal fat stores = 3 kilos. So that equals an avg weight gain of 13.5 kilos.

Wow really is amazing how much fluid can play a part in all of this! I am yet to see myself get swelling.

I am however eating less now pre-pregnancy as there is just no room in there my meals are now halved and also not working in an office so not snacking due to boredom!

wow fluid is huge. I am 33 weeks and have put on about 12 kg. I was fit and small to start with but lots of the weight gain is in my butt hips and thighs? Anyone else like this? How did you find weight loss after baby born? How long does it take for your belly to go down, hips and thighs to get back to normal - I know we are all different, but I do worry I wont be the same again!!

Another thing to remember is after baby if you are BF then you are likely to be heavier because of your increased boobs and the milk.

On my hips and thighs. Little bit on my bum. Im not too worried cause it's pretty easy to get off of those areas with a good walk everyday.

DP also felt it necessary to point out that I have a small roll just above a rather intimate place.  Nothing a good amount of BDing can't work off.

I think the weight breakdowns are good as it reminds you of the reality of what you're carrying but it's also good to take into consideration that you may also have a bigger baby. 3.3KG is what I would consider on the smaller size for weight of a baby. Most babies I know that arrive on time weigh between 3.6 and 4.5kg which is I think between 7 and 10 lb. Then if you've got a bigger baby, your fluid and placenta size will also be bigger and weigh more.

I think for me personally, my boobs have gained at least a kilo each . I went from a 12B to a 14D, so you can't tell me they haven't contributed to my weight. LOL

OMG yeah the boobs so weigh more than 1kg!!!! Mine have gone from a D to a G I weighed them on the vets scales (LMAO yes I crouched down and flopped them onto the small animal scales) when I was BFing Jake and they honestly weighed a good 5-7kg (I did it more than once ) so while the weight breakdown is interesting it certainly wouldn't be accurate for all body types I don't think.

I started off at about 66/67kg and ended up somewhere in the early 80kgs close to full term. I don't recall getting on the scales much towards the end, didn't really think about it! I probably put half of that on during the first trimester then plateaued towards the end, I was pretty small with Bethany through the entire pregnancy and Bethany came in weighing a healthy 6lb13oz, lovely! So your stats sound totally normal to me ;)

I started off at 62kg, now at 18 weeks I'm 71kg.  My mw tells me that its too much of a weight gain so soon, but I really don't have the motivation to count calories these days.  I was 70kg at 13wks and I've only put on 1kg in 5 weeks, so it must be levelling out somewhat.  My boobs have gone from 12C to 16DD which I think could be a decent chunk of the weight.  Besides, I've got so many uncomfortable pregnancy symptoms at the moment, that if eating what I feel like cheers me up I'm inclined to do so

Sharlene - im surprised that your midwife weighs you. A lot don't know as everyone gains weight at different points during their pregnancy depending on what their body needs.
I was really lucky with henry. Started off heavier than i wanted to be for my height (65kgs) gained around 15kgs i think. Most of that in the last 20weeks. By the time henry was 2wks old i was 65kgs again. 3months later i was down to 60kgs and by the time i got married when henry was 5months i was 58kgs. I did nothing to lose that weight. We went for a short walk most days and i ate whatever i wanted whenever i wanted it.
This pregnancy i have been eating whatever i want, when i want it. I figure there is a reason my body wants that thing. Hopefully i will have a similar outcome after this baby is born as i did with henry. Though i dont want to get any lighter than 55kgs. I dont know how much i have gained so far as i havent weighed myself lately. Will do a weigh in at 36wks (since thats when henry was born)

If I can get back down to 65kg I'll be happy. I was 64kg pre-preggy and I'm almost 6ft tall, so I think 65 is a realistic goal for me but I could go smaller if I tried really hard.

Who knows, it may end up that way without me even trying. *fingers crossed* oh please oh please oh please!!!

I'm 5"10 and pre preg I weighed 62kg. The first 18wks I only put on 1.2kg but I weighed myself at Mum's last week at 22wks (I was clothed tho) and I was 67.4kg so I don't think I'm doing too badly really. It's all boobs and belly. Haven't gained any weight anywhere else. My sister put on 20-22kg with both her kids and she felt that that was too much. She got quite chubby cause she is normally such a wee thing. It all fell of her tho after breastfeeding and now she is a size 6! One of my friends only put on 8kg with her 2 daughters. Lucky thing. I'm aiming to put on between 10 and 13kg which I think is realistic.

oooo i hope that most of mine is in my boobs!
I've gone from a 12DD to a 14G.

I almost look ridiculous as my boobs are still bigger than my stomach, and someone came up to me the other day and said 'oh you look great, your boobs are huge, i bet DH is loving that!'

I've put on 9kg, and that has all been since about week 17 as I didn't gain anything until then. Still wearing my normal clothes (mostly) though so I don't think theres too much extra padding, it must be all in my chest.

With my first pregnancy I started at 52kgs and got to 75kgs by 41wks+5days. My daughter was 8lbs 9oz. So I gained a total of 23kgs. This time I started at 62-63kgs and have put on 11kgs so far, and I'm 24wks pregnant tomorrow. I've put on most of my weight on my butt, thighs & hips, same as first pregnancy. Not sure how much weight gain on the boobs. But I have gone from a 10D to a 14D.

But it does seem, that if you start off smaller, you put on more weight and if you start off larger, you put on less weight.

I wish that was true for me Kelly!

I've put on 12kgs so far and its all gone on hips, thighs, arms and boobs.

Most of my weight gain I'm sure is because I'm no where near as active as I was pre preg. Before then I was going to the gym regularly as well as walking anywhere between 3-7km's a day and I've been way too tired and lately sore to do that anymore

Bra size has gone from a 14C to a 16DD or 14E depending on the bra.

I put on 14kgs with DS#1 and 9kgs with DS#2, I think I'm gonna put on loads more than that this time around!

At AN classes the teacher was telling us that your body creates fat stores for breastfeeding on your butt, thighs, below your bump and also across the back of your shoulders.

So by the sound of it, for most of us it's just fat stores for BFing.

Hmm interesting.
With Ryan I started pre-pregnancy at a weeny little but healthy 42kgs 5'2" put on about 20kgs and only 5kgs of it was Baby and all his gear.

This time I'm 54kgs and haven't put on any so far at 21 weeks, I lost a few kgs during MS but have somehow gained that back.

I think most of the first weight was just my body preparing to carry a baby, as I was really little.

So the same and it sh*ts me how my MW keeps going on and on about walking etc.......if she had any idea how much pain it gave me and how much i suffered with back pain for days afterwards she would shut up about it. Ive been swimming at least once a week for the whole pregnancy and since last week my skin was fine but now ive been awake every night scratching from the chlorine so i think im gonna have to stop swimming now which sux..........

But my weight gain is also from lack of exercise cos my diet hasnt been overly bad, and I have to exercise a lot normally to maintain a 65kg weight at 163cm...........

I have been keeping up a 500gm weight gain every week since i got pregnant.

Cant wait til i can join the gym again, for two reasons, i sweat out my stress toxins and dont get ecezma and i love the ME time........weight loss is a bonus

My weight gain has really accelerated in the last 3 weeks I've gained 2.5kg. making a total of 9.5 kg so far. My goal was no more than 15kg for the duration of the pregnancy. But the way things are goin now I'm starting to wonder if I'm going to end up gaining more than I wanted. I saw my MW yesterday and she said the baby is really having a growth spurt at the moment and rapid weight gain is quite normal for this stage of pregnancy, although it should slow down again at around 36wks

I started at 53kg and am 59kg at the mo - so 6kg weight gain for me so far. I reckon I'll end up with about 10 or 11 all up. And I agree with the boob comments! I have gone from D to E - they better stop there!!

My MW also only weighed me at the beginning and hasn't since. A friend of mine gave me a lecture about weight gain a few weeks ago and could absolutely not believe that my MW hadn't weighed me every visit - but looks like that is pretty normal!

My midwife has never weighed me or even talked about weight gain. She simply asked me at our first meeting what my pre-preg weight is and that was that! Soooooo glad she doesn't weigh me every time. I have thrown my scales out cause I don't want to get too hung up on my weight. I know I'm a healthy weight and still no extra weight anywhere other then bump and boobs (they wont stop growing!!! lol DP loves it! )So I'm happy.

its always such and interesting question isnt it girls!!!

i reckon your body just puts on what it needs at the end of the day (as long as of course you're not just eating junk for breakfast, lunch and dinner! )

my starting weight was 65. now i am 7 months and have already put on 20kg but im not that phased by it to be honest! my MW says there is nothing wrong with my size, or babies size and everything is just fine each to there own at the end of the day

Ive got a week to go and with this pregnancy I lost 8kg in the beginning (no reason why no morning sickness or anything, just happened) and today I am 3 kgs heavier than pre preg.

All my pregnancys have been dif though with the most I put on being 32kg , but 25 of that had dropped of within a week ofher being born. (lots and lots of fluid retention he he)

i was quite upset yest and wonder if I'll ever get back to normal - so many people have said I wont and also that my hips/thighs will never decrease in size after birth......is this true???

FayeG. No that is not true about hips and thighs. They do get smaller after birth. Whoever said they don't is just mean and nasty. 13kgs weight gain for 36 weeks is great! I'm only 26 wks and I have gained 12kgs already. Definitely in the hips, thighs and butt. I put on 23kgs with my first pregnancy and managed to lose all that.

I think about 6 months to get back to being a size 8/10. But to be honest I wasn't trying very hard. That was just due to breastfeeding. I didn't do any exercise, lol, naughty me.

I put on 15kg and most of that was put on in the first trimester because of MS And then in the last trimester a lot of my gain was also fluid retention. 7 weeks after birth I am now 3kg off my pre preg weight I read somewhere that 12 - 18kg is the normal range.

If you can keep active and avoid comfort eating (definitely harder for me during the pandemic) you can definitely lose weight even during your pregnancy.

The recommended 150 minutes a week of moderate exercise (or 75 minutes of more intense exercise) definitely helps. That's a couple of walks or online cardio / Zumba / HIIT classes a week.

Yoga helped me lose my weight a lot faster.

Yoga burns calories when done the right way.

If you are serious about losing weight and getting fit, you might want to implement a 60-minute power yoga and/or vinyasa flow practice at least five to six days per week.

https://yogaweightloss365.com/" rel="nofollow - This yoga weight loss program was easy to follow and worked for me during my pregnancy when I started gaining too much weight.

Each class is easy to follow, but is varied and enjoyable. Dynamic Sequencing means you'll always be challenged regardless of your current level.

If you want to follow my example, think about coupling your practice with a whole foods diet for optimal results.

Good luck!

Mandy
