Hey All,

I am just wanting to know how you can tell if bubba has an allergy to something and when should you worry

My lil girl is 7 months old and we tried her on some Formula the other day and she came up with a rash on her chin and neck, it went away quickly

What do you think?

Yvette

Spencer has an allergy to cow milk protein so when he was weaned he ended up with a rash and ezcema and really hideous constipation. The ezcema started as he was being weaned and so did the poos, he started getting green poos and then got the constipation once fully bottle fed. His rash looked like a viral one and was all over his head, arms and torso. Once on specialist formula the constipation cleared in days and the rash and ezcema took a week or two to clear up.

He has also had a couple of other allergic reactions, one is to parsnips where his face and neck/shoulders became rashy, I stopped giving him the parsnips and then tried again a couple of months later and the same thing happened. The other reaction was to Strawberries, he had one as finger food and all seemed fine so the next day i gave him another one and by that evening his face was rashy and blotchy by the next day OMG he looked awful he had massive red circles round his eyes and his forehead was bright red and blotchy and the whole thing looked very angry, his ezcema also flared up really badly all over his body. It took about 3 days for the blotchy look to disappear and a little while longer for the ezcema to calm down.

What I would suggest would be to try again and see if the same thing happens, it may have just been a coincidence. Has she had other diary products? I don't know what else would be in the formula that she could be allergic to but some of the other ladies might have some ideas.

Hi Yvette,

How are you? The same thing happened with Samara with two formulas - second reaction was quite bad as she had trouble breathing. She came up in hives and a rash which lasted about 8 hours.

On advice from a few people on here I've made an appointment with an allergist for the end of April and are going to continue breastfeeding till then.

I also read the labels of everything that I give to her as I gave her some Baby Museli that had skim milk in it and another allergic reaction, so we are keeping her dairy free.

Hope you guys are well apart from that - it was great to met you at Maria's.

Kim, we are all good, we will def need to arrange another catch up some time soon - I will be keen

Noooo! Don't try another formula, it sounds like definite cows milk protein allergy and she's bound to react again, and each reaction can get worse.
My advice would be to see your GP and discuss what happened and where to from here, if you want to wean Ella on to a formula she'll probably need either Pepti Jnr or Neocate which is only available on prescription.

But please, please, please don't try her with cows milk formula again! I did with Maya coz I didn't realise it was an allergy and she went into anaphalaxis

Maya,

I am glad I read this today as I was going to try a diff one today - you saved me hun.

I will def go to the doctor, strange thing is that for the first 4 months she was on formula 2 x a day with no problem until she decided she did not like it so I am just not too sure

Spencer was on 1 x forumula per day from 2 months till 3 months, the only thing i noticed was that he would take longer to poo after the formula feed which i didn't mind cos the formula was last thing at night and then he would have EBM when he woke in the night and would then do a poo in the morning so yay no nappy change and I thought it was just because formula takes longer to digest.
Our problems occurred when he was weaned fully, he got symptoms of reflux (had always been spilly but started screaming and back aching), he got ezcema and awful constipation. By the time I found out what was going on, which was about a month of trying diff formulas following plunkets advice etc, I had dried up. I then spoke to nutricia who said about the cows milk protein and then I took him privately to a paed as gps can't prescribe it because of funding. He was on formula the whole time that I waited for the script as well which was nearly 2 weeks. So for at least 4 weeks (as for the first part he still was having some EBM) he was on 7 bottles of formula a day and his symptoms were managed with lacutulose and ezcema creams.

My gp said that some allegies are more of an overload, so Spencer's body might be able to handle processing a bit of yoghurt every other day but couldnt' cope with 7 bottles of formula a day.

So anyway, just to explain a bit that what you are experiencing is normal and like Maya says go talk to the doc.

Yep, Maya had some formula at 3-4 weeks and was fine, then back on BM till 5 mths and when we tried formula again bang, she reacted. It was so unexpected, I got such a fright!
Best of luck with your doc! You could always try Karicare HA in the mean time, it's hydrolysed to make it more suitable for babies with milk allergy, altho some babies will still react to it.
