How long & up til what age was your child on losec.

Cooper wasn't put on losec til 13 months & if I miss a dose we really know about it. So 4 months now.

Should I be getting this looked into more as more of a defect rather than an overproduction of acid or food intolerance?

Or do you think he might need his dosage adjusted?

I'm seeing my GP on friday so am thinking of heaps of stuff to ask him.

Hey Kel

We are in a bit of a similar situation. Our DD only went onto losec at 11months - we tried everything natural first to get on top of her reflux first and mostly managed it until food was introduced. She appears to have a intolerance to all foods (or all that we have tried) as well she gets upset by a huge list of foods that I eat. At the moment she is not eating solids (just BM) and we still have at least a couple of bad nights a week. On food, all of her nights are bad. She is 13mths old now, and I am not sure whether to ask for a higher dose of losec or not...

We have to try her on food again soon - as soon as her cold is gone. I am really not looking forward to it!

Our Paed has said that if she reacts to food this time she will have to be seen by a gastro paed at starship who will probably scope her - I think that this is the only way to get a definate answer as to what the problem is. You could push to be seen by a gastro specialist if you are concered, as most of the time reflux is getting better, not worse by Cooper's age.

Gosh - this answer is no help to you at all... I don't really have any answers as most of the parents I know who have used losec have weaned their babies off it by 1.

Yes I'm wondering if I need to see the gastro specialist as well.

Are you on an elimination diet? I have a book coming from RPAH so I can do it all properly.

Yeah I'm thinking cause it's not resolving it must be something else.

I'd start out with pear, make sure you get it in syrup & wash the syrup off, make sure the piece is really soft not hard & give her 1/4 teaspoon doubling every day To see what her tolerance level is. Recommended amount for an adult is 2 pears a day. If you use fresh pear make sure it's really ripe & peeled. If she reacts to pear she will likely have a fructose intolerance. Also only introduce one food a week.

DD is also on 10mg per day. She is also on a heap of supplements to help with her reflux and leaky gut (our Paed takes a biomedical approach)

Our Paed has also put me on a restricted diet - no dairy, gluten, egg, soy, nuts plus there are a few other things such as citrus that I have taken out too. What's RPAH?

From last time we found that pear, pumpkin and millet were her least reactive foods (they had the mildest reaction). This time we will try pumpkin and add digestive enzymes to it to see if that makes a difference.

Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. It's in Melbourne and they have a great allergy clinic there.

Ah ok, I'm no dairy, soy & rice plus no additives/preservatives, low salicylates & low amines.

Yes, millet & pears are one of the lowest allergy foods. Interesting re pumpkin, it's a med/high (can't remember which) salicylate. Butternut pumpkin is Med & we've failed on that one

What does the RPAH suggest?

We had issues with salicylates, glutamates & histamines with DS at one point (as well as allergies to dairy, eggs, peanuts, soy and wheat). It makes for a very hard diet (and a very unhealthy one!). I haven't tried eliminating natural food chemicals this time (I don't think I can cut too much more out of my diet), although I am a bit careful about what I give DD.   It's a tough one, as I know that somethings I am eating are effecting her, but I have to eat well to make milk etc.

The preservative/additive thing is not hard though as I find I have to make most things from scratch.

I found with DS too that often he didn't follow the 'rules' for what he should be able to tolerate. eg he had a real problem with salicylates but could easily eat an avocado a day - crazy, but it was wonderful as it was one of his only sources of fat/nutruition.

Hey girls,
My DS is 3 months old, and he on 15mg of losec and 1.6mls of raitadine!! So the 10mg dose for your kiddies ages is teeny!!
I had to really push for medication doses to be upped as the docters didnt believe it was as bad as i was saying, but once he got onto those doses he was magic! Hes soooooo super happy and settled and the foods that i had eliminated i could eat again! Hes just stared solids on gps reccomendation and seems to be coping ok with anything.
Anyways, just wanted to point out that maybe they arent getting enough medication?
Hope you find some answers soon! I know how aweful reflux can be.

I'm making things from scratch as well. That is super weird re the avocado!

TBH, I'm now coming around to the idea that I should have put him on Neocate sooner at least that would eliminate my indiscretions in his diet. eta: Although it would have helped that he was diagnosed before 12 months old!

You can look up & read their intro to their book Here

I tried to get my GP to recommend a dose increase but he said that he didn't know & recommended I talk to the Paed. Gp is trying to get Paed appointment sooner.
