so you have to pay even though the reason is medical not "just because you want a CS"?

You have to pay for an OBGYN if you are not specially recommended by your GP, that is between $3500-4000 depending on who you see. You shouldn't have to pay for a ECS though... that sounds dodgy! Child birth is free in NZ (Hurry up and have kids before that little fact changes!).

No I dont have to pay for the elective c as such - what I am paying for is the specialist care through the pregnancy - so if I had not gone to the specialist and then found out what I found out now then the c section would be free but of course you get the doctor on duty at the time. SO the difference is that I know who is going to do it and have had his care right through. I did not have to pay for this but it was my choice, he scans me each time I see him and any scares which I have had 2 in the last few months he looks after me which is great.

Sorry, I missed out MW as well The price was for care under an OB if you just go straight to them without referral.

I must admit i am still in 2 minds about Elective or VBAC. I have a really great m/w- who i had with Brae, i love her to pieces and feel she would support me 100% in whatever choice i made.

I was sent to a specialist for a scan at 28wks to check waters etc as i had a leaking scare. Had a chat with the specialist(same lady who delivered Brae lol) And felt she was leaning me toward an elective; if i dont get babe anterior. Something to do with my tilted pelvis??
Anyway we will see... still planned VBAC etc and will be back to see her when i am a 35-36wks to finalise everything. Its a strange kinda feeling

I spoke to my wonderful midwife this afternoon and she said.... (in Auckland at least)

Midwives don't get paid if you have an elective c-sect, so they may be reluctant to take someone on who is planning an elective c-sect, altho she said if they have cared for you in a previous pregnancy they might do it. If you elect to go public you will more than likely be 'encouraged' to trial labour as there is a big shift atm towards reducing the c-section rate. If you have a private specialist (ie. you pay) it's likely you'll find one willing to do an elective, after all they're getting paid for it.

She did say tho that 'trial labour' is quite subjective - if you attempt a labour and then elect for a c-sect even very early on it still counts as a non-elective so the midwife gets paid. She also said that issues like big babies and awkward presentation can be a huge factor in one delivery and not at all in another. And that in the case of a big baby they might look at induction pre-dates, or on your due date, although after a c-sect they are reluctant to induce at all which really means a rock and a hard place.

We are currently negotiating with an obstetrician to join our panel of experts so hold onto all your curly questions coz with a bit of luck we'll have someone for you to throw them at really soon!

I know, I was shocked to hear that! Coz even if you do have an elective c-sect, your midwife still does all the prenatal and postnatal care, and if you have an emergency c-sect she gets paid, it's kind of discriminatory IMO. And I think it leaves the way for midwives to push women towards VBAC when it may not be in their best interests.

I also spoke with my m/w today as I am wondering what to do when we try for number 2 as I had an elective with my first due to breech presentation. She said the same things to me as what your m/w did Emma so if I do decide that I want go for an elective c-section then I won't go through a m/w but probably a specialist or through the hospital.

Glow it will be interesting to see what happens. If you have a tilted pelvis then your baby will probably remain Anterior, in which case they will be keen for you to have a c/s because you have two "odds" against you IYGWIM (it was a route I almost took with my breech 2nd, but she flipped in time).

I know I'm aaaagggessss away from even TTC #2, but I feel like I'm being "made" to try a VBAC just so I can keep my excellent MW

I have to point out that yes they don't get paid for delivery but they still get paid for your pre and post natal care. I honestly think if your midwife is that lovely then she wont mind making a pay cut to accommodate you.

yes, but as she is THAT lovely I don't know if I would want to ask her to do that for me

ARGH!!!! lol

Anyways, I might even find an OBs who is even nicer! *fingers crossed*

I just feel that I NEED to sort this all out before I set my heart on having another baby and I feel that strongly about not wanting to go through what we went through again.

I wonder if I would be able to have a consultation with an OBs before we TTC to sort out the EC/S vss VBAC? I guess I could as I would be paying for it.

Toni ask her and see what she says, ther is no harm in trying.
I also think if you dicuss with your previous MW her thoughts on VBAC for you or elect, she will be able to give you an opinion to start with as she was there with you.

I am lucky as my MW was terrible and just don't need to go down that track. Mine problem is VBAC or elect C/S....?

I can recommend a couple of local OB's if you like Toni.

Seems you girls are struggling exactly with what I am. One decision is made for me already I am going elective next time. Too much risk in my history for a VBAC. Now to get them to agree to knock me out totally or else must go for a back XRAy before i fall pregnant so they can bloody well see what they are doing.

Urgh. Decisions, decisions.

So Emma .. did I read that right in your post .. that they don't like to induce second time round if you've had a C/S previously?
