I'd be having words with the hospital. I would have thought that this would be a breach of the privacy act.

That really sucks. I would have thought it was a breach in the privacy act as well. You have every right to go mad at them how rude!!!

Call them while you're upset I too think it's a breach of your privacy!

They would of picked it up through your NHI number as that is used quite often to get medical info. They don't usually match it up to a person thou and so asking them for stuff. I would be angry too.
I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

That has to be a privacy issue - you poor thing! You have every right to be angry and upset. and on your behalf.

Big hugs Lu - I would be angry too. I remember them saying something about teaching hospital - blah blah blah, when I was having Elle - but seriously - I can't remember everything they said and did (or everything I said and did) in the heat of labour. They should have definately contacted you BEFORE they did anything at all with your notes.

I'd still put in a formal complaint Lu. I know they have to use medical records for teaching etc but to have a student contact you!?!?!? That's disgusting!    I'd be P'd off too!

I'm sorry that their call made you feel horrible Lu... but I'm unsure what they did was illegal... it's a possibility because you gave birth at Dunedin hospital then your details are available for this sort of study. I'm sure you could ring the hospital and request your details don't be given out tho.

Anyway, I just read and article on a study which was done on c-sect mums which was to prove that there was no relation between c-sects and poor infant health - so surely that's a positive thing! Read about it here

I'm sorry that your experience was horrible too... I'm sure you wouldn't have such a terrible time if you did decide to have another baby as you'd go in with a whole lot more info (and support from the OhBaby-ers!)

Edited to fix spelling mistake

I would make a formal complaint. I would also say something to the person that contacted you about it. They will feel terrible, but they will know who gave out the details.

I'm all for using medical records as case studies as they have to use something to teach the students with (this is the same reason why I agreed to have a student MW share care with my MW).
But perhaps the way they contacted you was wrong? I personally think it would have been more respectful for a Records Clerk or similar to contact you in writing to ask if you minded if a student get in touch with you.

Good to hear you're feeling better about it though Lu. I felt the same about having another baby after what I went through this time, but I guess time heals all wounds. If you wanted to get some answers for closure or whatever I highly recommend speaking to your MW or requesting your labour notes and talking it all over. I know it made me feel a lot better (even though the MW said it was the most unpleasant labour she had been through in her many years of being a MW We don't like to do things by halves )

I agree with Toni completely... talking things over really does help. I felt really disappointed with my birthing experience too and had to vent to my Mum who reassured me that getting out of the whole thing alive was more important than 'how well I performed' IYKWIM?

And you are doing a fabulous job raising James which will help him grow into a lovely young man... the birthing experience has nothing on that!
