Connor has milk protein intolerance and egg intolerance. He's a pepti junior kid.... anyway, his skin prick allergy test came up fine (no reaction) because he has a non-iGe reaction - that doesn't mean he can have diary or egg though. Connor sees Jan Sinclair too - she's great. Good luck with it all!

yeah i just dont see the point in doing the test and then saying its not reliable anyway:( never mind hes loving pepti so thats good..how much am i supposed to give him..hes easily finishing 150mls now but it says on the tin that much for four months or something.. do i give him another scoop? and with the other formulas we just rinsed our bottle and gave them a quick scrub with bottle brush but with pepti its taking forever to clean them..why is that?

We throw the bottles through the dishwasher - seems to be the only thing that gets them clean. Connor has 210mls a few times a day - but he's 18 months and eating his body weight in solid food each day too. The info on the side of the tin is a guide. You could talk to your immunologist/paediatrician about increasing the amount to 180mls - or just give him 180mls anyway and see how he goes. One word of warning though - when Connor first started on Pepti he would hog a huge bottle down and then first burp, bring it all up over whatever lucky parent was holding him at the time. Ewww stinky pepti junior, warmed in baby insides briefly.

heh. Just read Maya's post about allergies a page back - it's funny (in a really disturbing, worrying way) how much misinformation there is about allergies and intolerances.
Connor has dairy and egg protein intolerances. This means, although he won't go into anaphylaxis, if he has egg he'll have violent diarrhea and if he has diary he'll get colitis, days of screaming, writhing pain, diarrhea and occasionally blood in his poo.

When he had his first reaction to milk protein (he was four days old) he was taken to Starship (he had gone pale, floppy and unresponsive) and after hours of waiting around and seeing a junior doctor, we were told it was probably a reaction to the formula and not to give it to him any more and to exclusively breast feed.

At six months we had an appointment with an immunologist at Starship and were told it probably wasn't anything to do with the milk and we could start him on formula and milk in his solid foods. Two weeks later we were back at Starship emergency after he pooed blood (and lots of it - we took him to our GP first who absolutely freaked). Yep, back on the idea that he could have an intolerance and by that time my breast milk had dried up, so no going back onto that. We were given pepti junior, but only one tin and told to wait for an emergency immunology appointment.

Six months of formula and no dairy or egg later, we get another appointment with the immunologist who asked that we trial egg and dairy to see if there is a reaction, because lots of kiddies grow out of it. Sure enough, another trip to the emergency department because he has been screaming inconsolably for two days and we needed to check that he hadn't twisted or ruptured anything and the medical professional confirms that he might still have an intolerance. The doctor that we saw then, was absolutely lovely, however hideously uninformed on allergies and intolerances. He suggested that we start introducing milk to Connor in watered down amounts over a month so he could get used to it. Our immunologist, when we finally saw her, freaked out, that someone could give us such bad advice.

It was only at 14 months that we got access to a dietitian to give us support and ideas for food options for Connor. At this stage, he was on the 20th weight percentile for his age.

Allergies and intolerances have become so common, but there is still so little support and expertise available to assist parents. You often feel like you are navigating blindfolded through a minefield with your child's health and wellbeing all reliant on you not tripping or knocking something you shouldn't.

Good luck!!!!

we dont have a dishwasher and i dont think our can go in there?:( esp with all this drama about heat atm.. lol he hardly spills so we are lucky there:)

yes we seem VERY lucky we got to see Rodney(top doc) straight away ..as my doc is so great.. because it could have ended up like yours:( (sorry to hear that btw) I learnt from here that you can get free tins (or tins on loan) and at Rodney's you can get 4$ tins till the number comes through as well.. again I'm so glad we got to see ROdney early..apparently he's one of the top docs in NZ ..and Ethan is thriving :)

Elemental formulas like Pepti and Neocate leave a filmy residue on the bottles, not sure why, but the best way to clean them is to soak them in baking soda and warm water. I used to do ours once a week.

PS. Maree, sounds like poor wee Connor has been run around the mulberry bush We had similar issues with Maya, she ended up with gastric bleeding coz doctors kept insisting we try different things. Thankfully by the time the gremlins arrived I had turned into allergy nazi mummy so they've been spared the worst of it.
