Went to see GP again today - yay we have our number now and the pharmacy already had some Neocate in for us!! Child disability allowance all ready to go, and she gave us some Gaviscon which I wanted to try as I think Greer is still not quite right - although it could just be her personality but I'd rather try this first IYKWIM.

Anyway, it says for over 10lb babies to give them 2 sachets in not less than 225ml formula. She doesnt drink anywhere near that much, I usually make up 120ml bottles. So should I just make up bottle like normal and use one sachet like it says for babies under 10lb?

Also says not to give more than 6 a day. Does that mean if you are putting 2 sachets in one bottle, that you can only put it in three bottles a day?

And if its going to help them, how long does it take to show improvements? She had some in her last bottle and she only spilled once and it was quite thick. Then she did a few other dry burps, which are not very common around here!

I could ring the pharmacy, but thought I'd ask you lot first. TIA

6 doses per day,..2 sachets per dose. You dont have to give it in the bottle. Thats only one way! Isla was fully brestfed so never had it in a bottle. You can make it up in 15mls of formula or boiled water, and pop it in her mouth using a large dropper thing, you can get from pharmacy for like $2- I found these much better than syringe or spoon.
Also you can give it before feeds which we did on advise from Paed, and it worked soo much better! If she is having more than 6 feeds a day then miss out the Gav on one of the mid-day feeds.
Also watch for constipation. It usaully settles down once their system gets used to it, but can be bad,...often peaks after a few weeks use too

We've just started using this for Harry and it's really good - we saw results pretty much straight away, like you had with Hannah. He used to be spilling LOADS, and now he rarely does, and if he does it's really thick.

On Kellz advice I got a big eye dropper thing and it works SO good (thanks!!). Best $2.95 I've spent in a long time. We've tried every way - medicine dummy, syringe, spoon, bottle... and this one he just sucks it up quite happily. I think it's cos it doesn't come out as fast. Also he's probably a bit more used to the taste of the gaviscon now (it must taste gross, it certainly smells rank).

My doc said that what we were looking to happen is for the esophagus (sp?) valve thing to heal, cos what happens when they spill is that the acid damages it. So hopefully for a few weeks of not (or minimal) spilling, it will heal up and we won't need to keep using it. We may still have to, but will trial not using it just to see.

You'll probably notice her poop being different (alot thicker), and it takes Harry a lot more 'effort' now too.

You will prob need to keep using it until the valve that keeps the stomach acid down, matures and starts doing its job!
Isla had so much damage to her oesophagus from the stomach contents coming up then going back down again for 5 months(silent reflux- no spilling), that it took months of being on Ranitidine which reduces the ammount of acid produced (similar to Losec), as well as the Gav (to keep the acid down), for her oesphoagus to heal.

So glad the dropper helped Liz!
