    Posted: 06 November 2010 at 3:02pm
My daughter has some watermelon seeds which will hopefully germinate soon. I know they spread like pumpkins so was wondering the best way to try to contain them. Would stacking up some tyres work and planting them in there?
How many watermelons does one plant normally produce?
I am thinking they need to be in warm and kept well watered - can anyone confirm this for me?
Any help much appreciated!

The need heaps of warmth to grow. I have never had luck with them. My friends mum did and had 1 really big watermelon that she was waiting to go the right colour on the outside and her dog attacked it and ate it.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Thanks guys, we have four seedlings now and I have decided to get about 8 old tyres and put one plant in each tyre. I will put all 8 tyres in a circle then cover over the top with black shade cloth stuff so I can still water but the black cloth will keep them warm.
Once they start growing they can grow over into the middle of the circle of tyres. Hopefully this way they will keep contained and protected from anything. Will see how we go with this.

I think its a good idea to put something underneath the fruit as well to protect them, like pea straw or something. That also keeps them warm. I can't believe a dog would attack a watermelon! Am looking at mine with new eyes....

melons also need pollinating - so if you havent got loads of bees you might have to hand pollinate - or put a pot of flowers your vege/fruit gardens
