Just for those who are interested 
Monday morning around 5.20am I awoke to a contraction. Thinking nothing much of it I got up & went to the toilet where I had another contraction. I headed back to bed & gave Hubby a little nudge & commented that maybe today was the day… He just cuddled up & sleepily nodded before going back to sleep. After yet another couple of contractions, I gave Hubby another nudge & told him to wake up so he could time the contractions: roughly 2 &1/2 minutes apart and about a minute long! Okay time to call my midwife! So around 5.50am I was told to see how things went & to call Ruth back when I felt I needed her. Then I had Hubby call my Mum as I headed to the toilet again. From the toilet I started telling Hubby what I needed because I was sooo not organised! Main things being to tidy up & get me a hot water bottle because the blimen contractions hurt! Less than two minutes after getting the hot water bottle though, I was ordering him to run me a bath because the contractions felt so intense & painful. I knew that it was likely that things would slow down with getting into the water so soon but I didn’t care, anything to lessen the pain! And at first it did seem like things were slowing down but then it became intense again. I’m not sure what time it was but I asked Hubby to call Ruth because I couldn’t do it anymore. So she let Hubby know she was on her way. I think it was about 8am when my Mum arrived with my little sister. Mum came straight in to see me & took over. By now my boys were awake & demanding breakfast so my sister & Hubby sorted them out. I was crying & telling my Mum that I couldn’t do this & that the pain was too much for me to bear & I wanted to go to hospital for an epidural LOL! 8.10am and Ruth had arrived. She did an internal with me still in the bath and announced that I was not going anywhere as I was about 6 maybe 7 cm dilated! I couldn’t believe it as I had honestly thought I was still in early labour. It gave me a second wind & with Mum reminding me to breathe through my contractions I carried on as planned. Hubby had been given the job of setting up & filling the birthing pool which seemed to be keeping him happy & occupied. The second midwife was called & was asked to bring some gas with her. I was looking forward to using that gas!! 15 minutes later though I felt abit of pressure & pushed out membranes so Ruth was quickly on the phone again saying “forget the gas just head straight here”. We live rural so it is abit of a drive. There was a little bit of meconium in my waters but nothing major & fetal monitoring showed that Bubs was happy still. Also Ruth reassured me that Bubs had most definitely moved from a posterior position to anterior. I think it was around 9am that I moved from the bath to the birthing pool which was set up in the dining room. Also my Grandma arrived which was a wonderful, lovely surprise. I was feeling the need to push but was worried that I was not dilated enough so resisted the urge & begged Ruth to check me even though she thought I was fully dilated. I think the backup midwife Meredith arrived around 9.30am. Ruth checked me & found I had a small anterior lip on my cervix but was able to push it back so at 9.40am I started pushing! I felt like a total animal with deep grunts that I couldn’t stop coming out of me as I pushed. I only stopped to ask if the head was moving at all. I think everyone was laughing at me a little bit as I was so anxious to make sure Bubs was coming out in between pushes! I kept putting my hand down to feel the head & it was reassuring to feel the head coming out more & more and quite easily too. Hubby was sitting behind me (he didn’t want to see anything if he could help it!) while my Mum, Grandma & the two midwives stood watching in the front. Even my sister & boys came to see how everything was going before retreating back to my bedroom with my boys to continue watching videos. At 9.58am I welcomed my beautiful little girl, Erika, into the world. She was brought out of the water & into my arms after only 18 minutes of pushing. She weighed in at 8 pound 15 ounces (4.04kg), head circumference of 38cm & length of 52.3cm. She took to the breast at 10.05am & as I got out of the birthing pool a few minutes later, out came the placenta. No tears, grazes or anything! It was perfect... Oh & apparently Hubby did see Bubs head coming out at one point & was soooo not impressed! My midwife laughed at him as he has no worries getting his hands dirty right up to the shoulder when it comes to our cows giving births!! ------------- Mum to Alex (11), Blaire (10) & Erika (8) and Damien (6) Successful HWB VBA2Cs! LOL @ your hubby, I was nodding right along with him about not wanting to see the birth (I've tried watching births and almost passed out a few times!)... until the bit about cows. What, he does calf births and can't handle humans? No sympathy any more!!

LOL Busymum! Thats what I couldn't get about Hubby! He has helped cows have calves zillions of times but was absolutely positive that he was staying up by my head when I was pushing! He didn't even cut the cord either, although that was okay because I did it
Honestly I don't think I could have a better birthing experience! Although I was a really big wuss about the pain from the contractions, the actual pushing was easy enough. My girl is getting so big now & some days it still seems like a dream that I did the VBA2Cs.... It was just so easy that I understand now how women say they can forget the pain of childbirth. LOL Busymum! Actually Hubby is one of "those" guys who is quite happy to just not have some good loving (strange man!!!!) & not only that everytime I mention another baby he goes, "oh crap I REALLY better book in for that snip then!!!"
He REALLY doesn't want anymore kids, he probably wants no more kids alot more than I want another one so I'm sure he will probably get around to having that snippity snip op done soon.... Will be sad for me but the problem is if I did have another baby I dunno if that would be enough, I would probably want another one & then another & then another... PMSL. If I was rich & could just be a SAHM I would probably have a whole brood of kids Sadly that is not the case with me having to work (sux to be self employed sometimes! Wow just read your awesome story. AMAZING is all i can say and well done to you too. I had a VBAC but your a legend for doing it after 2CS. that must have been scary, I know how much I was crapping myself during labour after my csect.

In all honesty I wasn't scared at all. I was far more freaked out in the hospital with the first two kids to be honest with all the nurses & monitors & hearing other people I didn't know around everywhere. At home I was able to relax a lot more & concentrate on what was happening to ME!
And I remember thinking after how EASY it was. 4.5 hours of abit of pain & then done LOL. Wow absolutely fantastic..I've just read your amazing story and you're really an inspiration! I had 2 C's and did not enjoy the experience at all. Hubby and I purposefully left the age gap so that the scar could heal better etc. So, we've left the age gap even longer this time and I'm really really happy to say that I'm due in June 09..and now having read your story makes it even more possible..I'm hoping to get a fantastic midwife like yours but will need some help in that area as my doctor has already told me that very few midwives support HB's let alone HBA2Cs...i would love to get some first hand advice (when you're free)...but CONGRATS again and ...yeah wow...I'm really really excited about the opportunity...

| Wow thanks for that story! I have just found this website, had the OHbaby book out from the library, and am mum of two with baby 3 on her way. I have had 2Cs and am pushing for a VBAC for this one. I am starting Hypnobirthing classes to try and help me believe that I can do this...your story has really given me hope. I'm in Chch where were you? And do you know any midwives who'd support it in Chch? |

Hi everyone getting excited about the home waterbirth...I'm 36 weeks now and counting down...the birth team have been given their duties...lol...except hubby who I will have to tell on a daily basis otherwise he will forget and keep asking me...he's more worried about having a tidy house for the birth team!...lol...best of luck to you mummy3...I hope you find someone, Toni's absolutely right. I got rejected 20 times before I found this site and she gave me Ruth's number...just as well I'm in South Auckland too...I'm sure you'll find someone..don't give up

| Counting down...can' t wait...I'm getting so excited and nervous all at the same time..I was induced with my girls so I don't know what to expect for a natural labour...*biting nails*...37 weeks and 4 days now...we set the birth pool up the other night just to make sure Hubby and the girls were all good to go...had to dismantle it though but it's sitting in the lounge ready to be used...I can't wait...I'm feeling sooooo positive about this it's like I'm 5 again and waiting till Xmas to open my presents...lol.,literally ..lol...thanks Toni:)...you're my inspiration:) |

You can so do it, just trust, let go of your fear and go with it Natural labour is so different to an induced labour, ok its gonna hurt, but it builds it isnt just there all of a sudden (usually)

Thanks heaps ladies ...39 weeks and 3 days now...not long to go ...having loose bowel movements over the past few weeks but now also having hard stools in between...is this normal?...baby is facing front so I've been using the rocker to get bubs to turn, also went for a 20 minute walk to the dairy today just to try and get things started a wee bit...this is exciting:)...thanks again...keep the advice coming, I love it:) Both of you are so inspiring...Blessings:)

I found just relaxing is what made me go into labour.... Although the accupuncture session & stretch & sweep with Ruth probably really helped too

| Thanks Toni:) That's a relief..I went to do some errands at the mall earlier and could feel tiny wee twinges down there...so here's hoping..the herbal meds Ruth left for me is gross! but I've had 2 doses so far and it's a good feeling that I'm doing something proactive to give bubs a hand with making their grand entrance...last night I had such a huge appetite I couldn't stop eating! then I had gas all night and went for a good loose bowel movement this morning so I'm feeling quite hopeful that the next few days might see some progress...if not I'll be seeing Ruth again next wednesday and she's mentioned a scan and visit with the specialist at 10 days overdue...aarrgghh..not keen for either but it's just for a check to make sure bubs bag is stll full of the good stuff and not drying up...i'm soooo excited..i can't wait:):) |

LOL what stuff did she give you? I highly recommend the "Pre-Birth" spray. I bought that one myself

| lol..hey that's pretty hardcase alright...fingers x'd that will happen to me on wednesday if not before then..lol..yeah the stuff she gave me is birth prep stuff and it's foul but as it's only 2mls twice a day until Sunday, it's manageable...then it's 3 times a day until wednesday then it's 5mls 3 times a day until birth! I'm really hoping it will work its magic well before then lol...i had really bad heartburn last night...took over 2 hours to subside and I finally went to sleep after 1am...but waking up this morning, it still hasn't quite gone away and im burping alot...my tummy is rock solid and I'm starting to feel rather uncomfortable sitting up...i can't believe it's Xmas next week, time sure does fly... |

| LOL..NeivaD that is sooo funny:)...every evening i go to bed giving thanks to God that bubs and I have made it through another day and for bubs to come when ready because we are all so excited and can't wait to meet him or her...so far no pains or anything at all...just a lot of heartburn over the past 2 nights...bubs still moves ALOT for which I am very grateful cos it's like his/her way of telling me they're okay and doing just fine..I just know I've got a clever bunny in there...lol..we're now into week 40 day 4 and I'm starting to get bored...I've almost finished my TO DO list and I'm doing lots of surfing (websites)...talking to my boss yesterday I told her that I'd put my paperwork off until next month after bubs comes as it stresses me just thinking about it and i'm not really in the right headspace to do it properly now anyway...I offered to take my girls to the fleamarkets early this morning but they'd rather go to the malls which I struggle to find a carpark for and hate all the walking around as there isn't much room to sit around and laze when I get tired...I have the latest issue of That's Life but can't be bothered doing the puzzles...I kinda just want to hold bubs and snuggle right now but hubby says, don't worry, don't force bubs to come out if they're not ready to...lol...quick question while I'm rambling...Toni- I noticed you mentioned a SnS...and I was thinking of asking Ruth for one on Wednesday if bubs hadn't arrived by then..but then when I mentioned it to hubby and explained to him what it was he said not to do it and to just wait...what's it like? |

I personally would just wait it out without a s&s. I had one with my first child, it didnt work and went into labour on my own a week later. It increases the infection risk, and you can risk having your waters break, which isnt conductive if you and baby arent ready to go into labour yet. Its like a rough vaginal exam, not exactly painful but not really pleasant either. I wouldnt consider one till at least 42 weeks.
The last few weeks are hard, waiting is a pain and quite unsettling (at least thats how I felt) I had a huge mental breakdown a few days before I had D, and it seems to be my trend to release all tensions before labour, because within days baby is here lol I joke that i had my transition with D 2 days before he was born. | hahahahaha thanks Neiva:)...I'm patient enough to wait till 42 weeks but Ruth mentioned having to see the specialist before then and he might book me in for a c-section or to be induced...I really don't want medical intervention from the hospital as that was why I had 2 c-sections with my girls...my tummy is feeling nice, tight and hard and bubs hiccups seem to be lower down...but at the same time everything still feels kinda high up unless I'm imagining it to be so...no pains or other signs yet...are the tightenings a sign of impending labour?...i've been having them for a few days now..more often than not... |

I had prodormal stuff with D for a week or two before having him.
You dont have to see the specialist, nor follow any advice that is given, its just a recommendation. When I had my consult with him, I said I was happy to go to 43 weeks before considering any kind of anything. I had a consult booked for 41 weeks, but when I saw him at 36 weeks I had said I would not consider anything before 43 weeks from my LMP, so it would have been to discuss what would happen post 43 weeks (in my case I probably would have booked a c-section by the end of the 43 weeks, and in that time tried s&s, tinctures, accupuncture etc) Labour is so unpredictable, and can change pretty quickly in a very short amount of time. Do you have any emotional stuff that could be holding you back? Are your dates spot on? How long were your other pregnancies? How about your families gestations? There are so many things that can have an influence on gestation, and it is just a average date, and the risks do increase slightly from 42 completed weeks onwards but you are a while off that. To be perfectly honest, the SnS wasn't very pleasant. I remember Ruth said my cervix was quite soft & stretchy (I give thanks to all the EPO I was putting up there LOL!) but was still really long. She wasn't very hopeful about anything happening so going into labour on Monday came as a surprise to me.

| hmmm...thanks heaps ladies..it helps to get good advice that's for sure..like you Neiva I don't mind going past 42 weeks as well (bubs being well and all)..maybe I should do some sewing to pass the time? both my girls were late (8 and 10 days over) when I was induced, not that long really when I think about it..i guess I'm just a bit too excited and need to relax properly and forget about dates etc...had the worst heartburn last night which was painful at the same time as being uncomfortable...and I'm on 3 x daily dose of the herbal meds now too...i've decided to put off the sns to 42 weeks, hopefully with the Xmas break in between I won't be able to see the specialist before then...having bubs in the interim would be better..:):) |

| Thanks Neiva..bubs is still very active in there..so I guess things are okay on the inside...great idea with the picnic..might have an outdoors one..like outside our back door..lol...Ruth is coming to see me today so might ask her to do a cervix check if I'm ripe..or not..I think I need to really relax..my sister is collecting my girls today for last minute shopping...maybe then I can relax, have a bubble bath and a nap:)..lol.. |

| Yay...my cervix is ripe..1cm dilated and station -1...I'm really pleased with the progress cos when I was induced with the girls my cervix was still high and closed and after having the gel 2x I'd only gotten to 2cm dilated...Ruth says bubs head is well engaged and ready..just waiting on the contractions to kickstart everything into action now...we did another acupuncture session and I'm still taking the tincture...Ruth reckons a few days away and that we won't make it to 42 weeks..that's really reassuring and I'm glad my body is doing what it's meant to be doing:)...yay I'm so happy and relieved:) |

Ladies, when you have some time I would love some help.
Over time I am realising if I really want the chance to birth in the water then I am going to have a home birth, but DH is very anti the idea. He is worried about things going wrong and I just dont know how to explain things to him so he understands where I am coming from and a pointer to some reference material would be great! TIA -------------

Hey Mel, for reference there is a great book called Silent Knife which has a lot of statistics & references to actual studies. Google is also pretty good too and well of course there are those of us here who have done the home waterbirth thing ourselves
My Hubby was very anti the idea as well but I just made it VERY clear to him how important it was for me. I did the same as Toni and made it clear to hubby that a Homebirth was the best choice for me. Mum was anxious too and cried throughout the labour but she was very happy once bubs came and I recovered well from the birth. We're expecting another bubs on Sunday the day after our son's first birthday hehehe (lol, due date Boxing Day) and we we are preparing for another HB. I can't wait I'm so excited I've told hubby to set up the birth pool first thing Monday as we need the space for this weekend's birthday and Xmas celebrations. All the best everyone
