There seem to be a few of us, and we seem to be coming through in clumps now, and since there seem to be a few pregnancy things which appear to be peculiar to IVF pregnancies (eg. it's quite common for bleeding and lots of pain, and general monitoring before 'graduating' to being 'normal'!  ), and we've had an interesting journey so far, I thought we could start a thread. Emma, can you sticky us?

Erm, I got it because I used to write for OB Roksana, and in theory still should be   but I've become incredibly useless in the last wee (long) while  Very naughty Ginger I am.
And now, for the first whinge of the thread ...
I stopped my pessaries yesterday (large doeses of Progesterone 3 times a day) and I reeeeally wish I'd weaned off them, even though both nurses and doctors at F+ told me I didn't need to. I feel like several shades of crap today, and the cramps! Youch! I think it's my body kicking in to take over, but I wish it'd do it a bit more quietly  I'm so glad the the last part of IVF is over though, you have no idea. Great thread! I am just over six weeks and I think still in shock IVF worked first time for me. We are so very lucky to have the option. Still bit nervous and hanging out to get to 12 weeks with our precious bundle.
Shame about those messary pessaries (which is what dh and i called them!) but at least you are making the required stuff on your own and were given green light to come of them right? xx

I'm not IVF but I've always been curious about this.

I have no idea about the other stuff, but yep, multiples are more common with IVF. Partly coz they sometimes put more than one embryo back, this is becoming less common and they won't usually do it on the public cycles but if the embryos aren't the best quality they sometimes do to maximise the chance of one implanting. There's also a higher incidence of the embryos splitting to form identical twins, not sure why tho, maybe something to do with the IVF process? ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

Hi ladies,
Yay- great idea for a thread! Rundown on us: 3 years TTC, with PCOS diagnosed a year or so ago. Never ovulated, never had a period- even with Clomid. Was suitable for public IVF funding but didnt want to wait any longer so privately funded a 1st course (ouch!) and got PG first go! Was completely freaked out about coming off the pessaries, but within a few days was feeling quite well. Had bleeding around 20DPO and then again at 11 weeks, but all fine. Second one was a placental bleed, but baby doing well! Had loads of pains in the first 8 weeks, with a heap of scans to make sure things were going ok....think part of it was to do with IVF but also the usual growing things! The only other strange thing that has happened to me is that I am now 14 weeks and have lost 2 kgs since before I was pregnant- I think its down to fluid retained from all the drugs when on IVF but still quite funny! Dana - I have no idea about the multiples. Apparently the chance of a single embryo splitting is about 15% higher with IVF, but no idea why! I just kept everything crossed and tried not to jiggle mine in case it thought splitting in two was a good idea (No offence to twin parents - I was terrifed of twins as in my family, both on my mothers and fathers sides, twins do not reach live birth)
I think with pain/bleeding/complications thing it's not so much IVF-related as related to the infertility that has meant you have had to do IVF. For me, it's been to do with my endo. That's just a guess though - I do remember that the clinic said that bleeding is perfectly ok!
I'm the same as you Kiwibubs - I've lost 3kg off my pre-IVF weight! I'm putting it down to No. 9 not wanting any chocolate or sugar AT ALL Everything else I usually digest and the ms kicks in afterwards ala dry retching. I've had a few cup of tea power chucks first thing in the morning though I was worried about coming off pessaries too and I had terrible pains and sickness over the weekend, and felt like I'd been run over by a truck, but it's settling down now. Phew. I could hardly walk on Monday!
Summagal - I know what you mean. We've had 2 scans already, but I'll feel so much better when we've had the next one on the 14th. I guess it comes from complete disbelief that it's finally happening to us all! Kiwibubs - have you had your scan yet? All good??
I get the impression that although there are a few of us on here who are having babies off our first cycles, that it's not all that common (well, it's about a 25-40% chance isn't it? Duh!). My OB was impressed that it was our first cycle AND we have 5 blastocyst embryos on ice. I guess we did good! For a change!!
Are you two going through OBs or midwives? We opted for an OB after the bleeds, and with my endo issues which are causing problems, and I feel so much better about it. We were strongly recommended to have an OB involved anyway, so it wasn't much of a choice

My due date is New Years Eve! We have had about 7 scans so far, and I have only just hit 14 weeks, due to pains, bleeding etc and the specialists wanting to check it out. Had the proper 12 week one a few weeks back, and it was great- got lots of pictures and everything was well. Had the Nuchal Fold thingy done, and also fine. Off for Maternal Serum testing next week, and then hopefully that is it for a while. We also have 3 blasts on ice, for later, so are very excited that we wont have to wait as long next time to get up the duff!! ------------- TTC #1 2005-2009 (PCOS) Clomid x 4 IVF #1-BFP! Ginger - EDD 20th January. DH is convinced it's a girl so we'll see in about 9 weeks! Kiwibubs - EDD New Years eve! The pain is something else isn't it Kiwibubs? And I imagine that having had that many scans, you're going through worse than I am. One thing I've found has helped me is, as much as it bites, setting my alarm and getting up a couple of times in the night to make sure my bladder doesn't get full. I hate it, but I hate the pain if I don't sooo much more! One night I was curled up on the bottom of the shower at 2am for about half an hour trying to get my pain level down to even tolerable Things seem to be going a bit better now though.

I was calling the baby 'he' because I didn't want to call him/her 'it' but DH is so certain that it's a she, I've had to give her a sex change We were at a Pumpkin Patch sale over the weekend having a look and DH picked up a boys hat, looked at it forlornley (sp?) and said "You know, sometimes I wish we were having a boy. There's such cool boy stuff"  Obviously all I could do was look at him like he'd gone a bit soft in the head
I'm so glad everything is better for you - it's so frightening isn't it? The thing I found hard to reconcile was that I was in (and still am on and off) loads of pain, but that baby was perfectly happy - the pain was me, not her. Do you know what I mean? Things definately get better after 12 weeks, when the sickness goes and also the baby moves out of the pelvis!
Its still hard for me to actually believe I am pregnant- it has been so long, and such a hard road, but I have started to show so I am sure these feelings will subside! I'm the same - it still seems so surreal, and I've been showing for quite a while. I guess you feel like even after all this, it might still be taken away. We were 4 years in the making with No. 9 and I suppose it's really hard to leave it behind and move on to thinking about becoming a family!
I was with Fertility Plus in Auckland. They were fabulous, although a little disorganised at times ... I'd definitely go with them again if for some reason we had to do another fresh cycle. We managed to get this one publicly funded though - yay!!
Who were you with? I feel as though things are starting to come right already, although I was so sick yesterday and had a 'moment' on the motorway this morning Thank goodness I had waterproof bags on me is all I can say! But the pains are becoming less and I'll have a couple of good days in a row before a baddie, so I'm counting my blessings!!
Today I'm lounging at home courtesy of the truck thing this morning - I got so far in three times as long as it normally takes me to get the whole way to work and decided to turn around. I made a bit of use of the time though and cleaned the fridge out! Well I got told to move my ass into this forum and so i have or else I fear I might have a knowing look coming from Ginger
But today was the start of a whole new chapter for us and we got a BFP after IVF. I feel like all the hard work, tears and pain has all been worth it and as I am sure all you IVF mums know all to well would do it all again to have this awesome feeling.

*lurker* Hi ladies congrats to you all on your successful IVF. Just thought I'd share that my aunty's first child was an IVF after unexplained infertility. It was quite a surprise then when they got pregnant again a couple of years later. They hadn't been trying but hadn't bothered with contraception either in the certain knowledge that they couldn't concieve naturally. It shouldn't have been as much of a surprise a few years later when my aunty, who's 2 kids were now school age and who was looking forward to going back at work, found out she was pregnant with bubba #3. So after several years of "unexplained infertility" they had one IVF baby and 2 'surprise' natural conceptions. *lurker out* -------------

Yes we have 7 on ice.
Just had to call the nurse to ask when I'm due cause in my state of excitment forgot to ask. Am due on the 12th March. I have had major problems since the day I had my first AF when I was 11years old. How mean is mother nature. and when I was a teenager living in Gisborne JH for FA Wellington use to come up and help our GYN do Laps so when I moved to WGTN she just sent him my file. 10 years later and he still has me as a patient. He is a fanstic doc and I fully recommend him to anyone.

We had only one embryo make it to D-day but I think all the goodness was in this one little bean cos we got a BFP!! Nope, no MS but have been bit nauceous sometimes. Disappointed not to have had any major exciting cravings yet! although when I see something in a magazine etc it makes me have to have it!
Have you guys been exercising much? I took it very easy through IVF and have kind of lost my exercising mojo... and also scared something will happen..... but I know I probably should be walking at least. Well I did try and do some walking at the gym last week but got kicked off for being on the treadmill too long!! think I iwll pick it up a bit more after 12 weeks when things are safer? Opinions pilezzze?
I didnt find EC tooo bad, but then we only had four. The drugs obviously worked well! the last thing I remembered clearly was Fleetward Mac playing so I had to buy the cd as its obviously agreeable with bubs! Ack - I had about 30 Summagirl, so I was feeling a bit on the abused side by the end of it. The drugs were really good, but it was still awful. DH said it was hard to be there - he said that he could tell every time I was really hurt because my heart rate would go through the roof!
I've been exercising, but not like I did pre-pregnancy. We used to walk from home to the park with the dogs, around the park or tracks and home again - about an hour and a half or so every day of varying intensity. Now though we drive to the park and I have 2 days off a week from going at all, and we amble around. I'm still getting pain, so I take it pretty carefully, and we do very easy walks. I think it's probably sensible all things considered to take it easy in the first trimester - these pregnancies haven't come easily to us, and I don't see the point in risking them for the sake of a bit of exercise. If I was you I'd just consider housework, a bit of gardening etc, enough for the mo! Besides ... my nana was a maternity nurse and she said that the less fit you are, usually the easier the birth (because your muscles aren't tight and therefore resisting!)
I haven't really had cravings I don't think ... just food-related odd behaviour I've been seriously off some foods, and I had a few days where I was drinking lots of milk ... I was completely busting for a McDOnald's hamburger/cheeseburger for WEEKS and also Indian food ... although I won't go down that track again because No. 9 was not impressed! That's about it. Oh! I am eating more eggs than I ever have in my life, but that's because they seem to stay down and keep me full for a while.

I completely stopped most exercise through IVF and when I found out I was pregnant, did nothing until 12 weeks. I just didnt feel 'stable' enough and was worried about losing the baby, as I had lots of pain and a few bleeds.
Just getting back into things now, and trying to walk more. Trying to get a copy of the preggie bellies DVD, as this is meant to be amazing, but having trouble getting it here. EC was fairly horrific for me, and I felt quite a bit of it. They got 12 eggs! EC was awful for me too they got 12 as well.
How long did was it from the time you got your BFP till your first scan so you can see the heart beat?? |

I had my first scan at 8 weeks and there was not only a heartbeat, but the little blighter was moving as well! The specialist was doing various measurements and it just went swish! across my uterus!! The specialist got such a surprise he jumped and then started laughing! Needless to say, with such a reaction it wasn't hard for us to pick him to be our OB
You should have a scan scheduled for 8 weeks becuase I think that's the usual time for them to hand you over to normal maternity care. Any earlier than 8 weeks and you may not see the heartbeat - I think that's why they wait til then. Imagine going through IVF, hving your first scan and not being able to see the heartbeat, regardless of whether it's normal or not! Talk about anxiety city till teh 12 week scan!!

My first scan was at 6.5 weeks and there was definately a heartbeat. Just looked like a little bean and the whole thing was beating!

We had our 8 week scan today at FA (our last appt with the lovely Mary) and all good, bubs is right where he should be and heart beating happily!!! have a feeling its a boy as my sis only had nauceous with her boy and not girl and other things between us have been similar!!

My boss and I had a catch up this morning as he has been away heaps and he actually made a funny joke about me being PG. It was so random I started to laugh which made him believe it all the more and then i confessed. He was very happy for us. I actually feel better for telling him.

brought some preggie pants today. They were on special so I though hey why not... I tried them on and in the changing room they had a spongie tummy to try with your clothes. It looked soooo funny. But I am still really swollen from EC that I have a little tummy anyway. Yay Margs- no more pessaries! It is such a relief when you stop those...you can almost go back to being a normal pregnant person! I was on them until 10 weeks, and so over them by the time it came to stop.
Preggie pants are the best thing ever- I have 2 pairs of Egg jeans and wear them almost constantly. SO comfy and I am lucky I can wear jeans to work! Summagirl- Glad that your scan went well and it must be sad to say bye to Mary. I was so happy to be leaving Richard, but I must admit will send him a big pressie when this little one is born! Any of you ladies seeing specialists (obstetricians) for the rest of the pregnancy, or midwives? After 3 years of trials and tribulations, we decided on a specialist and go under Auckland Obstetrics at Birthcare. They are fab although bloody expensive! We're under Origins kiwibubs - we are much the same as you ... after all we've been through and then of course a couple of scares, but the constant horrible pain ( ) it didn't take much convincing when F+ told us that they strongly recommended we are looked after by an OB!

Oooookay ... just went to the loo about 15 minutes ago and I'm starting to bleed again by the look of it. It's red, but it's more colour than blood. I'm just waiting on a call back from my OB (and this is why we're going with an OB!) but I don't want to go and check again. The pain is changing too and getting really sharp - it's really really low, but I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

Blo*dy child ... honestly!
I've spoken to my OB - he thinks that based on how this pregnancy has gone so far it's likely to be irritation, possibly of the bladder since I've been having hellish problems with that. Thankfully too I went to the loo a few minutes ago and things were pretty much clear. So, I'm going to head home from work and take up my spot on the couch again and keep an eye on things. He's at the hospital all day today so he said although he's perfectly happy to see me, he think it would be far better for me not to be running around getting to him, and he can see me tomorrow at the clinic if things haven't settled or I'm still worried. Plus DH and I ... ahhhmmm ... *cough* ... yip, that, yesterday so it could even be that. Poor DH - he hasn't been allowed near me for blimmin ages because I've been in so much pain, but I felt ok yesterday and now look!! He's back to banned!
A scan would certainly be reassuring, but my OB is right - I don't feel like wandering around Ak hospital finding him. Much better off to sit quietly today. In the meantime, I've definitely got a few extra hairs so I might need a dye job when I go to the hairdresser on Saturday
Aye aye aye!! Thanks everyone for your thoughts - mostly I feel fine about what my body is doing, but I hate to feel scared. I've been through so much for this little blighter! I've had coloured mucus (sp?) on and off overnight and again this morning and after a long night I've given in and taken paracetamol I feel neurotic, but I think I might go and see my OB anyway, just to make sure that kiddly isn't distressed. I'm pretty sure it's my body as opposed to baby, but I want to be certain. Once I've had a symptom and seen that everything is ok, I'm perfectly happy. I wouldn't be worried about the small bleed to be honest if the pain with it wasn't really different for example. That's what I thought. I feel a bit embarrassed but I figure that the anxiety I'm likely to feel over the weekend if I leave things till my Monday scan will be worse for No. 9 than a bit of embarrassment for me being neurotic! Its one reason why I'm glad that my OB is involved with F+ - he understands what we've been through so far, and perhaps why we'd worry more than maybe we need to.

Oh dear Margs Not good! Everyone finds different things help, but the one thing that really worked for me was to try and keep poking food in.
OB appointment went well. The plancenta is right across my cervix but baby is really happy and using it as a trampoline (today he/she was breech). He/she was sucking his/her thumb and then gave us a wave (or punched me ... one of the two ). The placenta thing is a bit of a worry but the OB said he'll have a better idea of what''s what after the NT scan, and in the meantime I'm to take it easy and funny-business is banned. Glad to hear No. 9 is doing well Ginger - I'm so pleased for you. Just a word of warning though - at 9, 11, 13, and 14 weeks Jack was jumping up and down all over the place, the specialist found it really hard to catch a still shot to measure size etc. Anyway, my point being he never stopped moving even in his sleep and started crawling at 5 months so good luck

Margs, the only thing that worked for me was crystallised ginger. I sucked on it all day, and that made things bearable!

Eek emz!! Oh dear. I just remember No. 9 swishing across the screen at his/her 8 week scan and giving us all a surprise Although I think he/she was half asleep when we had one the other day because there was a bit of hand waving and that was about it. Mind you, after the week I'd had, I was more looking at the heartbeat than anything.
We have our 12 week scan this afternoon - and by 'we' I mean me and kiddly DH, dopey boy, has started doing some overtime to help pay for the OB and forgot today was a big day and got himself rostered on at work!! Still, since we get to see kiddly pretty regularly anyway, I'm not too worried and we have no reason to think that today's scan won't be straight forward. I htink DH will probably just ask the OB really nicely to let him have a peek when we go in on Wednesday for the results etc.
I'm not counting my chickens, but I had a good day yesterday with almost no pain, and although I've got a little bit going on today, it's nothing like it has been which is an enormous relief! I got a bit desperate and resorted to bribery with No. 9. I said to DH on Friday when I was feeling spectacularly miserable ... this kid is *definitely* a girl, and probably a redhead the amount of trouble it's causing! I think you've had it worse than I have kiwibubs, so I feel a bit reassured to know that!
I'm having the scan at Ascot - so hopefully, being private, they might not be under too much pressure and will let me oggle No. 9 for a bit Poor DH is really annoyed with himself for missing it. I doubt he'll make that mistake again though!

MS was not to bad over the weekend but hanging around. I have found that rice crackers are good and that the charlies soda and fruit juice drinks are helpfull as well. The cranberry is the best and cranberry is good for your uteris. Also I have been having the barkers blackcurrent and honey concentrate with hot water. Very tasty. Scan was great as Ascot- they did a DVD of photos for me (about 20 of them) to share with family so maybe you can do the same for DH?

Our scan went perfectly ... or at least, everything is beautifully normal. No. 9 wiggled like there was no tomorrow and made life rather challenging for the radiographer
Turns out No.9 is a bit of a giganta-baby, measuring at the moment at the TOP of the 95th percentile for length!! Hardly surprising I guess since its Dad isn't exactly a midget, but eek! Let's hope it's at least skinny for birth!! The radiographer did the measurements a couple of times and then kind of cringed and said "This is a biiiig baby". Ug. Cheers for that!
I opted to get the DVD for DH (and the radiographer, bless her a thousand times even switched to 3D for a minute or two in the middle of it so DH could have a good look at the little poo), and a CD as well. I'm so relieved to have the scan done and everything is good. Our chances for Downs are 1 in five thousand and something and Edwards and Patau's syndromes about 1 in ten thousand and something, so I feel really good about that. All ok here, am back at work tomorrow after 3 weeks away (conference, holiday & funeral) and am definitely showing now...not much movement from Bubs which i am a little concerned about but am only 16.5 weeks so could just be too early - get the odd flutter/bubble feeling but then think it is probably me wanting to feel it. Had a quick scan a fortnight ago as I was having some irregular marking and all was ok, bubs moving about quite happily....maybe i have too much padding

My OB told me not to expect to feel No. 9 until about 20 weeks melly so I wouldn't panic. I know you can feel them earlier than that, from what I've been told, but I guess it's perfectly normal to feel movements quite late too!

I've put on weight I think, but it's all belly and around my waist ... my hips have shrunk a bit (my other maternity pants slide South a bit too) as my bum and thighs are a bit the same. I said to the radiographer yesterday when No. 9 was going mad that it's amazing that it's wiggling so furiously and I *can't* feel anything!
And don't worry ...
