Ok now I have posted this in Pregnancy a while ago, but seen as this is here now I thoguht I'd do it here too.
What brand of cloth nappies do you use?
Good old fashioned cloth?
Or the new fancy schmancy Pocket system nappies?

Good old fashioned cloths with the Johnsons liners and some Bravo wraps I got from Babyonline. Worked well with Maya and no probs this time either - although the Bravo wraps are soooo much nicer than any of the covers I had for Maya.

I have fuzzis (newfangled pocket system ), peapods, stuffables, and a swaddlebee pocket (old style).

Fuzzis and Pea Pods are great

Stuffables are next to useless (cute print though ) and swaddlebee never quite worked for me... but new style is much better - the old style was from early 2005.

Edited to get my damn dates right.

Nikki, you definitely get better!! I always have trouble starting off, its much easier when people just ask questions!

If I have another baby, I would prob do the same as with Hannah as a newborn - mainly old-fashioned cloth and covers, because she outgrew hew small size fuzzi at about 8 weeks, and then into modern cloth after that.

I have also tried fitteds with covers which were ok but they take too long to dry and are bulkier. I havent tried prefolds. Tried a one size nappy but hated that, it never fitted "perfect".

I love pocket nappies because:
- so easy to use
- dry really fast
- fleece against baby keeps them dry so dont need to use liners, and poo falls off/rinses out really easy
- trim fit
- can adjust the absorbancy
- lovely colours (there are some gorgeous fitted naps out there but you need to put covers over them )
- although you need a couple of sizes, the fit really well (cos they have domes for waist and thigh) and one sze fits for ages (eg Hannah started in medium at 2 months and has only just outgrown them cos she has large thighs, now in large whigh will fit until shes TT!)

Sorry long post, but obviously I have a lot to say about cloth nappies (and will prob think of more to add to this later!)

PS I am SOOOO happy to see so many of you using cloth and/or thinking about it, and even tho I love (and sell) Fuzzi Bunz, as long as people use cloth of any brand I am happy!

I don't think there is much else I can say as aimeejoy just said it all!

I am a HUGE fuzzi's fan (just got a box laod with all the bits and pieces today from a Trade Me deal - bliss!!!).

I love that I can adjust the absorbancy, good fit, trim, great colours, fast drying, in shorte, they rock!

I've also got a few others in my stash, a couple of pockets made by some TNN girls which are just loverly (including a great Christmas nappy), I've also got some fitteds, (snazzipants and a couple I received today of a trade me seller) and I also have some prefolds.

I tend to keep the prefolds for emergency nappies though they are also great to stuff pockets with, especially at night.

The fitteds are gorgeous but it does suck having to put a cover over them.

My Xmas avatar is Maddie in her Xmas nap...so cute!!

I have a friend who uses fuzzis, one who uses wonderoos,a nd one who uses mummytouch and they all recomend them and one who uses good old fashioned cloths.
So with all these choices out ehre there is so much to chose from.
I got a pricey for mummystouch and they were $495 for 12 nappies and inserts (they OSFA) any extra inserts are $8 each, and the nappies seperatly are $40.
So I was thinking maybe I might have a look at waht you have Nikki on Thursday and go from there. I have posted about next Thursday in all the msn parenting sites I belong to so we might be able to get a good group.
Should see on here whos keen??

I should add. bought Taine medium sized fuzzis from about 4 months. he is now nearly 11 months (gulp!!!) and still fitting them well. we have also large and xtra large. large fit him, and xtra large fit for night time when they have a lot of stuffing. so even though you might feel that a one-size-fits all may be more economical, I have found the mediums to fit Taine for AGES! also worked out that it took me three months to pay for them - as in, the money that I would've spent on disposbales, so anything after three months of use, I'm saving money!

I've got real nappies which are a pre-fold & cover system. They're great - I've hardly had any leaks & they dry really quickly. Only problems are they're a little bit fiddly to put on & can be kind of bulky. We've also got some magic-alls which are all in one's. They're super easy to use(no different to a disposable really), nice & trim, & come in lots of cool colours, but they're not hugely absorbent (although they do perform better with a booster pad) & they take quite a while to dry too.

If your bubs dont have particularly large thighs, mediums will fit for a loooong time, like even longer than Hannahs (10 months wear).

but that all depends on teh size of the child though. we have had issues finding a good size nappy for HAleigh at 14 months she is 13kg (at birth just under 5kg), and up until she was 11 months she had extremly chubby thighs, which is why we;re trying to get as much information on different kinds of cloth nappies as we can.
Even though we've used disposable for her, which is why we're looking into cloth to see if theyare better in sizes.

for me, fuzzis are adjustable so good for the chubby thigh child. also if you do the trial pack, i'm sure they offer a money bcak guarantee if they don't fit.

Posted By: aimeejoy
Date Posted: 06 December 2006 at 12:59pm
Yep, there is a money back guarantee (30 days to try it). Also if you bought a package of naps if they are unused and the wrong size, they can easily be exchanged.

This is the thing that a lot of people can't see and as an agent is the biggest stumbling block, I just can't get anyone to see past the lump sum payment (even though with FB you can pay off over 3 mnths).

It's a toughie AimeeJoy, cause $200+ sounds like a HUGE amount of money. People don't often stop to think what they spend in a year on nappies... I didn't. But after having a 6 pack of FB I went through my receipts and worked out how much I have saved on nappies, even though I was only using them half and half with disposables. And then I rang my agent for another few so I can be completely on FB!!

The other thing I appreciate is the lack of smell hanging around in the house or garage. I don't have to wait a week for nappies to be collected for rubbish, they're washed within the day. Yay!

I can see past the lump sum - it's just a lot of money to front up with rather than paying it off in smaller bits (like you are with disposables). I will definately be using cloth - just not too sure what kind.

I have booked a hire kit so will get to try a few different kinds out before we buy and I am making sure that we have the cash sitting there so that when we decide what to get, we will have the money sitting there. I am really keen on fuzzis though but I am a bit worried about buying a whole pile of nappies and then finding that they don't really suit us. The hire kit will be great for sorting that out.

Fuzzis have a payment plan that i made full use of both times I bought a pack with them. We were spending roughly an extra $10 per month for three months by buying the fuzzis over disposables, but as I said, after that, we were saving completely. And still using those naps today. as for Jake's ones, we worked out that $66 a month was the same as we were spending on his nappies (disposbales) so it seemed stupid not to get them.

I just read something interesting on the net - apparently, on the disposable nappy packs it tells you to flush the poo down the toilet and not to put a "full" nappy in the bin due to health and safey regs for the bin men/women. Would be a good agrument when people say they don't like to deal with the poos with cloth nappies. I haven't got any disposables here to check if it's the same in NZ.

i use prefolds and covers for toby mostly - i dont find them bulky at all, rather trim really. but i used old fadhioned flats on him to start with.
i use fuzzis for gabriel, but they arent my fave, i prefer the happy heinys on him and the joelypockets, i have two of her fleece ones but havent tried her one size or fitteds yet.

for nights i use fitteds with a wool cover for toby and just scored a buzzy bee snazzipants which is way cool. on gabriel i use pockets stuffed with a flat and a microfibre insert too.

my fave pockets tho are rosies (who doesnt make any more) i have tow fleece ones and two PUl and also some of her all in ones which are great too but i dont really like AIO's that much...

Yup it does say that on all disposable packs! One girl at work argued about the having to flush thing and was most put out when I pointed out you're meant to flush the excess with disposables as well.

Her argument was "well no one does it" so I pointed out that just because no one does it doesn't mean you're not meant to!!!

Hopefully no one minds me sort-of thread-jacking....

I've just bought some more Fuzzis and now have enough for night-times (not just day) for both my girls, Hannah is almost 3 and Briona is 16mos. Question is, how many inserts and/or doublers do you use overnight? They both sleep up to 12 hours (yay for me!)

Busymum... depends how much they wet. Hannah seems to be a super wetter combined with a front sleeper... it's not pretty.

I use a microfibre insert, a hemp insert and a microfibre booster. It is working ok-ish, but she still seems to get damp through the night. So I am working on wool! Yay!

As a comparison, Han used to just use a microfibre insert and a folded flat overnight in her fuzzis and that worked fine (until she decided to start holding her wees for long periods of time.)

SB - I think you might have to wait until bubs arrives on that one, just my personal opinion - as when Toni came over today I could really understand the different nappies for different shaped babies thing (she brought Caitlin along). I just bought 18 Mediums, and six Petite Toddler, but for example Caitlin will be going from small straight into Petite Toddler because she has a different figure to Erin.

Sarah Beth
I would say that the minimum amount of nappies you'll need would be equal to how many nappies per day you go through plus one or two. In my case, I have started Fuzzis with a 14mo so only needed 3-4 changes per day. I bought 6 mediums originally (Fuzzis are usually sold in packs of 6, 12, etc) and that requires me to wash and dry every day. I would say 12 would be very comfortable for me because with littlies it's easier for me to do a load of washing a day anyway.

As Jax said, you will need to wait until Baby is born to get the right size and FB agents are great for being able to try and compare different sizes. They say most kids just do 2 sizes. In my case, I can see that Briona will be going from medium to large in the next year. Hannah is in large (night times) and will easily be able to fit them for another year if necessary.

With my bubby (due January) I am planning on putting her in disposables until she can fit the mediums I have at 2-3 months. I'm keen to not buy too many different sizes if I can help it!

-------------

well given the amount of new born nappies I have, it will be no problem to wait till after he is born! Given I know someone that might become a rep for fuzzis it might work out well. DH however has just found out the price and I may have to yet convince him (again, he actually liked the idea till I told him the cost)

I don't think I need to mention how many I have!! But seriously I've found 18 has been a great number and skip the washing for a day or so quite happily. It does depend on how many nappy changes you do and how often you want to wash the nappies.

Sarah Beth - If you do decide that you can't wait until your baby is here (*cough* miss impatient? who me? noooo *cough*) and buy your FBs whilst you still ahve 2 incomes (what we did)...

We ordered 24 smalls with inserts and doublers and 6 petites for later. Even though I certainly wasn't expecting a 9.7 baby she has still been in the smalls from birth and probably has about a month to go in them (poor love has her mother's thighs ) then she'll be in the petites.

P.S
Thanks for the order Jax

www.fuzzibunz.co.nz

There is a price list and also some sample packages to help you decide how many you need (i.e. how often you want to wash the naps).

We bought 24 and fo a newborn that coughed and poo'd and no one that doesn't poo but wee's for the olympics (sorry if tmi ) we found that was spot on. We'll order another 12 petites (total of 18) and HOPE Missy stays in them until potty training. Apparently after 9 months babies just get taller not wider.

If you still can't decide, PM me your email addy and I can send you all of the research I did before I bought my set of naps (great for that DH that just doesn't get how much money you will save )

Sarah Beth the sizings are all on that website too, it's a great starting point.

You will probably spend the same on a 6 or 12 pack of Fuzzis as you would on 6 months of disposables, varying of course on how many changes a day you do. After then you get free use for the rest of the time your Bub fits them and for probably two other kids after that.... or if you decide to have no more they have a great buy-back option too which really does mean you lose no money on them.

My DH was shocked at the price too - $30ea plus inserts etc - but it's heaps less than buying disposables, even for a year.

I think small and petite would do most kids at least to 3-4 years. The annoying thing (for me) about smalls is that they don't fit the same size inserts as all the other sizes so it's a bit more expensive there.

-------------

Posted By: aimeejoy
Date Posted: 11 December 2006 at 10:39am
but you can reuse your small inserts as boosters for larger sizes, so you dont need to get as many of those

It depends when you start what sizes you'll need and thigh size of baby. Hannah has very chuby thighs and went from mediums to larges. She doesnt fit her petites well any more. Also SB, if you order while preggy and the size isnt right, they can be exchanged for the right size (unused of course )

And Toni, lol, I am so glad that you have become an agent!

It looks like they'd fit quite a wide range of sizes too. I have been playing around with the snaps, but I think I'm going to need to browse the website to figure out how to get the right snaps to fit the right size.

Very cute colours too.

Plus imagine wet coloured disposables leaking dye all over.. well, everything!

Good on all you cloth mummies! Makes me feel guilty every time I see this thread lol.. but with Ella toilet training right now there is no point in buying any for her.. still like seeing all your bubs in their cute nappies though

I had a q though, do you have to wash the nappies in their own separate wash? or with other clothes? as I did a little bit of cloth when Ella was younger but used to soak them in napisan and then never had time (or desire ) to wash them by themselves after I'd already done one or two normal washes..

Some people prefer to wash their nappies separately... or wash synthetics and natural fibres in separate washes... personally, I didn't really bother and threw everything in together.

As a part-way gesture, you could wash your naps in one of those mesh laundry bags... but again, I never did!

And you don't have to soak them either... unless you are feeling that way inclined.

i was mine separately - don't like the idea of toileting things in with other things like tea towels - but thats me! also I wash Taine's stuff sepearelty anyway as he seems to be slighlty allergic to the normal wash powder

yep - we wash seperately too. With Fuzzis, you need to use less powder (with most brands) and I always put them on a long heavy duty wash so they get rinsed then washed to make sure all of the yuck is out

I rinse them first, but bear in mind that we get just one pooey a day, mostly we just get wet ones now. So anyway I rinse first to get the muck out and then chuck the clothes in with them. I put the cycle on double rinse too (since I don't have a hot/warm water connection to my washing machine).

The biggest reason for me doing that is because I started with just 6 fuzzis so it seemed pointless to do a whole load just for 4-5 nappies.

Our washing machine doesnt have hot water, so we soak the fuzzi's in nappisan, then put then in the washing machine just for the rinse cycle. Works fine.

I saw the prices and the all in one was more expensive than the pocket by prob $5, but I will see which one DF likes tonight. Those camo pink ones look so cool on the site.

Well atleast you can justify buying nappies for Haleigh even if she is close to TT because you can use them for the new one... I can't believe I am still buying nappies when Han only uses them when she sleeps I just keep chanting "resale value... resale value"

And yeah, it was fun today. Loved to have your input Sarah - it's awesome to have someone who can back up how simple modern cloth is

Lovely to meet you all anyway.

And anyone else who wants to see the stuff I have... just let me know. I can come out any time after xmas... it's great to get out of the house!

I'd get them for Haleigh, there's still a lot of nights yet and you can use them for the next bub too. I only started using Fuzzis when Briona was 13mos old, I've now got some bigger ones for Hannah at nights as well. Hannah loves them.

What is a good number to have of cloth naps for going full time in them? I have 6 at the moment.

Posted By: busymum
Date Posted: 20 December 2006 at 4:41pm
Jess it depends how often you want to wash them. If you are prepared to wash & dry daily, you'll need a day's worth (maybe 5-6 at Ella's age?) plus say 2. But if you want to give yourself a bit of room get two days' worth.

I have 8 for my DD age 1. Two of them are the next size up so she only wears them at nights. She goes through 3 or 4 in a day. I wash and dry basically every day but having a few extra inserts means that even if I'm caught short, I can have a nappy washed and dried within an hour anyway.

I am definately going cloth with this bubs and I have the hire kit piece of paper sitting on my desk here at work to remind me to pay the deposit (woops) and it has a nice picture of all the nappies in the kit and this lady comes up to me today and starts preaching at me about how I don't want to use cloth nappies and I should use disposables because who wants to spend all that time having to clean nappies etc etc etc. It was the first outright negative response I have had and I was REALLY annoyed about it but I was very proud of myself for maintaining my smile and not losing my cool. Some people

I wash her naps everyday so far. I have brought a couple of cute embroidered pocket naps which i will use aswell. Ill probably get another 6 next year sometime.

Leish that totally sucks. Good on you for being able to keep a straight face!

Leish I can't believe anyone would go on like that! Maybe a "poor you" if that's how they were feeling, but not preachy

I don't really find it adds much to the washing anyway. The amount of times a smelly nappy spreads in reality or just in smell to the outer clothing, you gotta do all that washing anyway, just about. And of course I'm constantly changing and washing tops because of self-feeding efforts

I've got twins in cloth nappies and honestly if they were that much work I wouldn't bother! I just chuck the nappies out of the soak bucket into the machine, throw in the baby clothes and put them thru a wash cycle - and hey, I'd still have to do the same load even if I didn't have cloth nappies coz I've gotta wash the clothes anyway! Plus when my girls were in disposables the first couple of weeks they were going thru a box ($40 worth!) of Huggies a week!

Must admit tho that I have finally been semi-converted to modern cloth (after my SS on another site sent the girls a pocket nappy each) - yesterday I bought the girls 2 Happy Heiny pockets each, one lime and one yellow. And a friend has made them some rose pink covers with pockets as well. I figure pockets are best for us coz they make use of the flat cloths I already have.

Oh and I also bought Maya 3 of the Happy Heiny night trainer pockets - she is still a big night wetter nearly 2 years after she was day trained and those Dry Nites are blimmin expensive!

Now just waiting for the courier man!

Sadly you will always get people who are negative towards cloth nappies...I got totally slammed by some people for planning on using them. It's just comments made by people who 9 times out of 10 have no idea what they are talking about so ignore them!!

Besides it's really satisfying to be able to shove it in thier faces when you do use cloth full time! (yeah I have a small evil streak in me - I know!!!)

I dont see what peoles problems are with cloth these days. I would prefer clothes to disposables, as I am useing disposables and they cost a fortune and cause extremly bad nappy rash on Haleigh.
Which is why we are switching to mummys otuch in the new year. Next bub will be in cloths full time.
When you look at how full your bin gets at the end of every week with disposables oyu know why so many mroe parents are switching to cloths, its amazing how much room they take up in your bin/ bag.

And they try to say disposables are easier. I fail to see how...MCN's are just as easy to put on, less nappy rash cases, less explosions and leaky...the only difference is an extra load of washing...and that's not exactly hard!

My Mum would never speak to me again if I used disposables full time - she is so anti! She's the one that really pushed me to use cloth with Maya (didn't hurt the budget either!)

But must admit she thinks all these modern cloth ideas are a bit OTT - I think she's just jealous that they didn't have such cool stuff when she had kids...

I think a lot of people think that cloth users will be preachy - like "look at me saving the environment as you kill it!" kinda thing, and say those things to make themslevs feel more justified in using disposables. I mean, each to their own! I was talking to my SIL in Sth Aus and they have massive water restirctions and pay a heap for the water they use - and she plans on going back to work, so for her disposables are probably a bettre option.

Posted By: MyMinis
Date Posted: 27 December 2006 at 7:19am
yeah true. water restrictions would make it harder.
im doing this more for my kids skin and to save money, and give us more room in our bin.
Once we get the nappies I will do Haleighs clothes on their own, but seen as we all ahve sensitive skin I jsut wash all our clothes together to save me time, plus Haleigh doesnt go through many clothes anymore, up until she was 5 months it was changing more than twice a day, Im jsut waiting for her to get into the play in the mud stage lol.
My grandparents love the new loth nappies, my nana thinks they are the best things ever and wishes they had thenm in her day, she's lookign forward to seeing the new nappies on Haleigh (when we get the nappies).

We looked into the cloth option after we saw the prices of the disposables (and being told by friends with kids that the cheap ones are useless). We needed to save as much money as we could for me to stay off work as long possible. We did HEAPS of research and found that the Fuzzis were the best (quality/absorbency/price). I liked them so much I became a sales rep for them
