Hi Ladies

I have just joined the board and am 12 weeks pregnant today! We will have a 12 year gap so its almost like having a first baby. So much has changed.

Has anyone here given birth at Birthcare? Been to their Ante Natal classes? How did their services compare to National Womens.

you can go for a tour around both - birthcare from around 14 weeks pg i think (or sneak on like we did while visiting someone) and nat womens around 26 weeks (cause they go into skbu and nicu etc)...def go on a tour...i wish i was going to birthcare it looked awesome...but hospital for us....and we havent done that tour yet (OMG!!!)....
we are booked into postnatal stay at Birthcare (just in case we can) - all prices etc will be given to you when you go on the tour.

BTW congrats on your BFP!!! You will find lots of help on here too!

We did the ante natal classes through them, they were great. Unfortunatly it turned out we couldnt birth there or be transfered
If you have a straight forward birth at Auck Hosp you get transfered to birth care automatically, everyone is entitled to 3 days post care for free, if you choose to stay for more days then you pay. If you have c section you wont get to be transfered either. Birthing wise you only have midwives and not alot of pain relief. The rooms are very nice, but so to are the new ones at Auck. Have a look around and congrats on your pregnancy

Well you already know what I think I was so stoked to be able to go there again after I had the twins, and they were great. I wouldn't ever birth there just because I feel more secure knowing that there are emergency facilities in the same building, but postnatally I found they didn't even compare to National Womens (and as you know I had quite a lengthy visit to Nat Womens when Maya was a couple of weeks old... )

I did my antenatal classes there tho and all I got out of them was a sore butt from sitting for so long. They focussed the entire time on labour and delivery when what I really wanted to know was what to actually DO with the baby after I got her home, and I had a bit of a social clash with the other Mums as I was 21, unplanned baby etc. whereas they were all professionals, married, in their 30's etc etc.

But then I don't know that the Birthcare classes are any better/worse than the National Womens ones coz they both have pretty much the same course material.

You can actually stay at Birthcare after a c-section, depending on your condition and how long after the op it has been etc.

I wanted to birth there, but then had to be admitted to hospital for antibiotics (waters broke too long before contractions actually started), and unfortunately didn't get to transfer there in the end either because I wound up needing a transfusion.

Hopefully next time though - looked wonderful on the tour !

I to am 12 weeks preg yesterday and there is a 13 year gap for me as I have re-married.
I will be having a c-section but my specialist says that I can go to Birthcare and for a room with one other is free but by myself is $250.00. I will stay at Womans Health (National Womans) as can when having a c-section.

If you birth at Birthcare you get a private room free for three days but if you birth at National Womens you twin share free or can pay to go into the single. I hasn't thought about touring their delivery suites.

I should be all right with the age group at Antenatal classes Emma, but we will take heed and do the weekly classes not the full day one.

I am pretty sure Shelly is right, the shared rooms are free, but private rooms extra. My cousin was in there a few months back. Worth paying for an extra room if you can afford it I reckon.

Good thinking If you do the antenatal classes you also get to tour the delivery suites as part of one of the classes.

Solo rooms would be worth the money, after all that exhaustion the last thing you'll want is to room-share!

One of the perks of having twins was getting a solo room at no charge - more I think because no one else wanted to share with me at TWO screaming babies!

I thought you couldnt go to BC after a c section because they dont have docs and no morphine.. Great you can go though if you want to.
A friend birthed at BC and didnt get her own room? so im not sure about that. I personally wouldnt be paying $250 for a single room, sharing isnt that bad and your not there for too long, I ended up by myself anyway.
Just my opinion though

If they have women who are booked in to the private rooms and have paid (but not necessarily birthed there), then someone who births there but is getting free care might end up in a shared room... make sense?

yeah that is right re the private rooms and also the prices have just gone up - we have a partially subsidised room on hold (in case i dont have a c section) and new price from now is $280 per night!!!

Also we are still being told that if a c section we wont get to go - anyways if a c section at akld then we get to stay 4 days in a private room anyways apparently?

I have booked on akld tour now - no more dates free til 22 Jan and you must be 24 weeks plus to go on tour....would pay to book now ready for when you are like 25 weeks or so....

I will book in for antenatal classes at Birthcare and do a tour while there. Thanks Bombshell, I'll also book in for a tour of National Womens. If I birth at NW then I will still transfer to Birthcare. I'd like the single room but I'd rather we had a weekend away now than pay $280 per night after the birth.

My due date is now in the July school holidays so hopefully we'll have lots of big kids around to help at home once I get out.

Hi Bombshell,
I was thinking another place for you to look would be Botany Maternity Hospital to come too after the birth.
It would be closer to where you live and I have visited friends there.
Very Clean too and homely like Birthcare.

I was looking forward to going to Birthcare, and had booked a private room. But as labour didn't go as planned (mwhahahaha, cos they ALWAYS go to plan ) I had a c-section and stayed at NWH for 5 days. I was pretty happy with the care I received there, although the food was boring (but edible), and downside was my DP could not not sleep over with us. I was told I could transfer to Birthcare after 3 days, but decided it was pointless to do so.

As for the actual care during labour and birth - totally outstanding. I had the most amazing experience with all the medical staff and my own midwife, and would definitely recommend birthing at NWH. Absolutely wonderful and kept me informed about what was happening every step of the way. Fantastic.

I'm giving birth at Auckland hospital but have a private room booked for Birthcare. I've got Southern cross insurance which gives you $1000 dollars to be used on quite a few things during the pregnancy incl stay at Birthcare. As we have not used it for anything so far (fingers crossed), I'm planning on using the money to stay in a private room at Birthcare - I would not be paying for it otherwise. Looks really nice though.

I wish we could afford a private room at Birthcare! Hopefully it will be a very quiet few days when bubs comes and I will fluke a private room. Otherwise I guess we will cope with sharing.

I birthed at National Women's and transferred to Birthcare Parnell about an hour later. I have to say I highly recommend both. National Women's was clean and had great up-to-date equipment, the birthing rooms were huge (ask for one with a spa pool -- they are amazing) and I never had any random people popping in during the birth (I had a big fear of janitors or medical students wandering in to watch me in labour!). The only crappy thing about the experience is the lack of parking. You have to park in the 3-minute parks outside, rush up to the maternity unit, and then your birth partner has to run back outside and park the car in the carpark so you don't get towed. We got lucky, as a security guard spotted us as we pulled up and said he'd watch our car for us while DH got me settled upstairs, so we wouldn't get towed.

You can do a tour of National Women's -- you have to ring and book, but it's pretty useful. They tell you all the good stuff, like how to get the elevator to take you right to the maternity floor without stopping!

Birthcare Parnell was also great for me. I was in a twin share room but never got a roommate in the time I was there. The food was good (you got to choose from a menu, which I loved), the midwives on duty were fantastic -- the second and third nights they took my baby out into the hall with them so I could get some sleep, as I wasn't sleeping at all out of paranoia that something would happen to her if I went "off duty". They were great at helping me with breastfeeding, although I admit that each midwife had her own idea of what was the best position. They were also good at kicking unwanted visitors out -- all I had to do was nip down to the midwives' station and look at them with pleading eyes, and they'd come bustling into the room a few minutes later with some excuse that always made my husband's nosy relatives hightail it out of there!

I also did antenatal classes at Birthcare, and like Emma, I found that they focused too much on pregnancy and not enough on what it would be like with Baby at home. I suspect that is what most of them are like, though. I also had a bit of a clash with the other people in the class -- they were all professionals in their mid-30s and most of them were a bit, ahem, poncy. For example, in the first class, we spent 30 minutes discussing the types of cheese that are and aren't safe to eat during pregnancy. "Is brie pasteurized? How should I store it? Can I have camembert if it's straight out of the fridge? What about bleu cheese? Edam?" I remember my husband and I looking at each other and mouthing, "What the hell???"

We did a tour of Birthcare as part of our antenatal classes, and next time I think I will try to birth there. Yes, they don't have all the medical equipment that the hospital has, but the hospital is right around the corner -- so if you've had a complication-free pregnancy and you want a drug-free birth, Birthcare is a good option. They have spa pools at Birthcare as well, although their birthing rooms are a bit smaller than at National Women's.

So I'm a satisfied customer of both places -- but not in a hurry to do it again! Not yet, anyway!

:) Katherine

Hi Katherine

Thanks for the great feedback on Birthcare. Well I am a (non poncy) 30 something professional that is a bit concerned about which cheeses to buy so I might just go ahead and book those classes. LOL. I won't rule out a hospital birth just yet though. I want to see how the pregnancy goes.

I had difficulty establishing breastfeeding last time so this is why I really want to go to Birthcare, for the after care.

I stayed at birthcare first time round, like Katherine I fluked a twin room without a roomie! It was very nice and I think i would probably prefer to stay there even if I had to share a room rather than stay in hospital (or north shore hosp anyway!). The nurses were great, excellent help with breastfeeding. The food was good and i loved the atmosphere, not like staying in hospital.
