There's been an outbreak in Wellington: out of 5 kids, 2 had been fully immunised and 3 had been partially or not immunised. What kind of faith is that supposed to instill in NZ parents?

begs the question of whether the immunisation works doesnt it?

In all fairness they do state when you do it (well I know they did at school) that your child can still get it but research has found that those immunised generally do not get it as severally as those not immunised.

scare mongering really. the article does not say what strain it is. Man sometimes the media sucks. The immunisation is only for one strain.

Yep was gonna say that. The immunisation is against the strain of meningitis that there was a NZ epidemic of, but it is very possible that the children contracted a different strain of meningitis. That's what I'd say happened.

Totally agree.

They conviently (sp?) left out the stats of how fast the number of confirmed cases of menzb has dropped since rolling out the vaccine and like you said AlyAyde it could be a totally different strain of meningococcal all together.

The main thing to look at is these kids were hospitilised and none died. I don't even think any have lost limbs. So in that way, the vaccine is doing the job. I believe that the drop in serious consequences and deaths is due to the vaccination. Just like nuttymama pointed out.

And awareness has been promoted because of the vaccines too. So maybe the parents took their children to the dr/hospital because they knew the signs.

Man, I would hate for my boys to get this

I agree that it is just scare mongering. As others have said, vaccinations are never a 100% guarentee that you won't get something, simply reduces the chances and or/severity.
