Topic: Ive got SAD Posted: 05 July 2010 at 9:14pm |
Well its taken a few years to realise it but I have diagnosed myself with having SAD......Seasonal Affective Depression.
Now what im struggling to find out is can i take St Johns wort to help this while Im breastfeeding. The info on the net seems to be contradicting.
Has anyone taken while BFing?
Funny i always though i got depressed around my bday cos its in July but after speaking with people i have realised its seasonal cos of winter not my bday.
I do have underlying issues that obviously come out during these months, but most of the time I can stay ontop of my these things

No unfortunately you can't take it while breastfeeding.
I feel for you having this, winter sucks at the best of time. Can you plan a winter activity that helps you enjoy the season?
Google seretonin foods as they'll help, plus exercise helps boost it as well. Banana's & pineapple are the key ones that come to mind.

Have your vit D checked as well and look into a light box. Not sure if they are available out here but they are in the UK so if you can't find one in NZ maybe look on UK sites so you can see what I'm talking about, apparently they are really effective.

Chickielou - I think I remember seeing a thread about St Johns Wort somewhere on OB. And from what I remember it was a big no no. I too have suffered from SAD, and I found sun exposure to be the best cure. I used to take a product called Kava Kalm then too - not sure if they even make it anymore, or if it is safe while BF'g - but it did help me with sleeping and feeling more rested. I hope that helps some, its not a highly publicised condition. x

I've heard good things about EPO and vitamin B. At least I think it was those 2. Apparently those supplements can help.

B vits and Fish Oil are good... My mum has quite severe depression and is on quite high dosage drugs (she needs a letter to travel with them ) and after a month of taking fish oil she was able to lower her dosage (mildly) and I found it great when i had early stages of PND...
Hope you find the right combo for you chick!
