Topic: Breast feeding tops... Posted: 13 August 2005 at 8:54pm |
Just a quick question.. well 2 really
1. Are special brestfeeding tops really necessary?
2. Which are the best ones to get?? Don't want to spend lots of money and then have them be no good...
Thanks

nup not at all. they might be convenient but millions of women do without them..
i have found the best tops for feeding to be stretchy ones.. i have a lot of those winter woolen ribbed skivvys... they keep me warm,. they aren't all bulky or baggy and they look nice and tidy. another plus is they pull up easily to feed and yet don't end up being soo loose that they get in the way. other good tops are t shirts, and ones that maybe button down the front so you can only undo what's necessary to feed and keep the rest covered.. or tops with two-way zips that allow you to do the same thing.
in saying that i am curious about specialty feeding tops so if you get any and they are good.. tell me!

I just wore button up shirts and that did fine. i was a little funny about feeding in the shopping centre or anything, so i was usually in a private area, or at home where I was fine and didn't care so much.

another alternative. Is to put a boob tube under your normal top. When you want to feed pull the boob tube down and your tshirt up. Stops people from seeing anything.

The breast feeding tops are ok but not really any better than your everday clothes and they never fit right, made for massive boobs and huge tummmys i found for the 1st few weeks it was good then I dont thinkI ever wore them again... ive got a few singlets that convert to strapless, they are great you just undo the front on your good to go.. and the boob tube is great to..

hey, never thought of that, might try it.. i guess it also adds another layer to cover up your bras... less chance of breast pad outlines being seen through clothes.

I found tops I could lift up were better than button up ones in public because they were more discreet. I love the boob tube idea tho coz my back was always exposed! But button up nighties were great for when Maya was tiny. I never bothered with the specialist breastfeeding tops, and I doubt if they make them to fit my giant boobs anyway lol

I agree Emma. I also just use tops that can be pulled up, as opposed to shirts. the best thing about winter is I can wear a cardy or jacket and most people have no idea. I don't feed abby in public as a rule however we went to the gardens on sunday and the monkey decided she wasn't going to take her bottle she wanted mummy. As luck would have it I had a cardy on and feed her, there were heaps of people around but hubby said it just looked like I was cuddling her.

So many things to think about.... I suppose I shall just wait until baby is here and see how it goes, I don't know how I feel about feeding in public either but I suppose it doesn't matter what I wear at home.

I didn't have any great thing against feeding in public, which is just as well since Maya would never take a bottle. I was discreet about it, but I never really thought about there being anything wrong with it in public. After all, there is so much pressure to keep bf. I fed Maya in church, on planes, in restaurants...

I'm not against bf in public as long as women are descreet. After all it's perfectly natural. But I think descreet is the key word. We went out with the boys a while ago and there was a woman feeding her about 1 year old but she had everything hanging out,it was all I could do to stop jayden 3 from having a closer look, and my 8 year old being the pervert he is couldn't stop staring. In his loudest voice he said "You don't feed with your boobs hanging out mum" I try to be a little descreet even at home especially when my 8 year old is there as at that age they are very curious. she was making me feel uncomfortable let alone hubby he went red. I just don't feel comfortable doing it. I guess it just comes down to how comfortable you are. For the record the 8 year old got a lecture in being polite not to mention speaking quietly!

I didn't mean I was against it, I am all for breast feeding in public, I just don't know how I will personally feel when it comes to ME being the one to do it!

Duh I'll read it proparly shall I. Like I said it does just come down to how you feel. Once abby worked herself up screaming I forgot to feel embarrased and just wanted her to stop crying!

haha yeah, all humility goes out the window when you need to settle a screaming kid!!!
I completely second/third/fourth the boob tube idea. I usually wear a singlet under another top so I can pull the top up and singlet down as it is freeeeeezing with your back exposed. only problem is that the straps of the singlet get a bit stretched! i really like the idea of a singlet with detachable straps.
maybe we should market these as an alternative to the bfeeding tops?

Alyssa would never take the bottle either. And i did have to bf in public a couple of times but felt very embarrased as she was VERY nosey and would come off and look around lots and my boobs arnt easy to hide. Hence i would try real hard not to be out at feed time or at least be at someones house where i could feed in a bedroom or somewhere quiet.
