They will show a positive result if you are pregnant, but you can not confirm you are pregnant by that as could be ovulation. There was a great site somewhere but I can't find it right now
Basically the deal is that luteinizing (sp?) hormone is very similar to hcg. I believe it has 2 of the 3 components that hcg has if I recall correctly. So when you are pregnant an OPK will show up positive as those two components are present. However getting a positive OPK doesn't guarantee you are pregnant. You cannot use a pregnancy test as an OPK because the pregnancy test looks for all three components.
Okay I might have the number counts wrong, but hope this explains it somehow.
I wouldn't do it, they test for slightly different things and if you got a positive OPK when you were hoping for a pregnancy BFP, you could be disappointed if it turns out to be wrong.
I ended up doing about 5 opks when I was pregnant ...didnt know it at the time..thought the lh surge was pcos playing up! turns out I was pregnant, I think it picks up the same thing but cant use it the other way around?
The other TTC board I frequent has had a fair few number of girls confirm that OPK's can be used as HPT's. I do know that MOST of the girls that have tried it have all been around 5w+ pregnant.
