I'm a serious newby and trying to figure things out...

Since coming of BCP my cycles have normally been 30-31 days, last month however it was 25 days.

So I'm really not sure how to tell when I'm OVing seeing as my cycle keeps changing...

How do these test strip things work?
Should I be taking my temp?

My OB/GYN has suggested I go for a day 21 test to check to make sure I'm actually OVing, so that will be mid-Jan.

Hmm... sorry for all the questions, I'm just feeling a bit out of the loop!

TIA for any advice

MrsA.....  the test strips are called OPK's (Ovulation Predictor Kit) and they indicate that ovulation is about to happen within 12 to 36hours.

Charting is another way of finding out (in retrospect) when you have ovulated although some can tell by a "dip" in their chart that they will be oving a day or so later...  Maybe give charting a go... you can sign up with www.fertilityfriend.com for free and they give you very easy and informative lessons on how to chart.  The ladies in the "charts" thread will be able to help you along as well

The progesterone test should be done 7 days past ovulation.... GP's etc base the day 21 test on a general cycle of 28 days which would make that test 7 days past ovulation (from day 14).  Tho as you know ... not all cycles are 28 days

Hiya MrsA...yep come and join us in the charting thread hun....I joined charting to be sure I was oving at all. The girls are all fantastic! A little hard to go for your 7dpo tests if you don't know when you ov eh lol

Your temp will show clearly after ovulation has occurred and most of us use OPKs to give us a heads up on when to get busy

Your cycle can take a while to sort itself out after coming off the BCP....charting is really interesting just to see what's going on. If you go to the charting thread, you can feel free to stalk any of our charts as well    GL

And from my experience (I have used this line twice tonight, I sound so much like an expert don't I LOL), it is unusual, but possible, as I am proof of, that your temperature can dip for OV, yet the OPK's come up negative at the same time, and then the OPK's come up positive AFTER the temperature dip... (which is why we think we haven't been able to conceive again ourselves since pg #1 which was a fluke, cause we keep missing the boat!).

Here's a link which might explain what I said last night just a bit better:

http://www.fertilityfriend.com/Faqs/Ovulation-with-no-positive-OPK.html

And yes THUMBS UP for charting - if it wasn't for charting I wouldn't have given up clomid just for a one-off cycle, I wouldn't have discovered that I ovulate 2 days PRIOR to the OPK's showing me a positive, and I wouldn't be pregnant right now! And all that on my first month of Charting!

I was going to do 'Cycle Monitoring' via bloods through a fertility specialist to see when I ovulated, but the Charting was much more fun, and FREE, and I didn't need to take any time of work for blood tests etc.
