Topic: Might be told to stop bfing Posted: 19 April 2010 at 7:59pm |
I had mastitis a couple of times when bfing Jack but have had it at least 1/2 dozen times with Ben.
About a month ago I got a lump which turned into 60% of my breast being rock hard like when your milk comes in, ended up on antibiotics and it took 36hrs for it to disappear, it just completely went when I fed Ben.
2 wks later it comes back but smaller, another course of antibiotics and a referral for an ultrasound the next week. Within 5 days I get redness like an infection and get a different course of antibiotics. The next day the ultrasound and it finds nothing.
I have a follow up with the GP a few days later (last Friday) and the lump is back so I get a referral to a Breast Physician which is on tomorrow.
Then yesterday I end up with mastitis (but no lump) in the other breast and I am still taking the last course of antibiotics!!! So spent 2.5hrs at the A&M, ended up with IV antibiotics and had to go back this afternoon for another lot.
Two of the GPs I have seen have told me that I might have to give up feeding. I really don't want to, I am really enjoying it this time and was even thinking to continue bfing after 1yr which is when I had thought to stop. Mum is coming with me tomorrow so will just have to see what the specialist says.

Hope it's something easily fixable and you can keep feeding as long as you both want to.
Not sure if you just wanted to vent to like minded mums or if you wanted some advice - so if you do want pointing to some info on recurrent blocked ducts/mastitis LMK

I suppose a bit of both Weegee. The info would be good thanks. Mum is a bit skeptical about me having to give up but then she was a card carrying member of LLL for 7yrs+

I know I've written a huge post on this on here but can't find it right now in the search - in the meantime there's a page on it at kellymom...

You've probably heard this before but just in case....the antibiotics won't help a blocked milk duct. I had really bad blocked ducts for the first month and I'd end up with huge boobs but hardly any milk able to come out. Every night I'd do some serious massage on each lump in the shower (made showers very long). About an hour later milk would be pouring out of me. Oh, and it's really really important to massage backwards (away from the nipple).

I got mastitis alot, it is awful and I feel for you.
One thing that I found was that I needed plenty of rest to get it to come completely right. Actually I ended up in hospital on antibiotics for a week once and that was the best thing that could have happened because I got the rest I needed plus I could really concentrate on massaging the breast and feeding my boy heaps (if he wasn't hungry I expressed).
hope that you get your desired outcome.

Yeah how come massage away from nipple?? I have not heard of that one.
Linzy, hope you can keep going, I ended up with a blimmin abcess, had to have an operation and it was not pleasant at all so am super paranoid about any little strange feeling there now!!! Want to keep feeding for as long as possible tho so also interested in anything people have to say.

2 LC's and 2 midwives all told me to do it this way but none of them explained why it works. As a result I only started massaging this way (backward) when I got massively engorged with rock like lumps in my breasts and wow it was so much more effective.
The explanation I came up with (no idea if it's true or not) is that if you massage toward the nipple you're just jamming that cheese into the milk ducts further and squashing it into a more solid lump. If you massage away then you're pushing it into a bigger part of the duct where you can break up the lump with the massage.
Anyway, on each rock like lump I used to do about 10 deep strokes away from the nipple (really bloody hurt), then about 10 little circles, 10 backward strokes etc. Probably did up to 2 mins on each one. It took ages at first because I had so many blocked ducts but after about a week there were only 3 or 4 persistent ones I had to work on.

I had mastitis but mostly blocked milk ducts up to about four months, used to get blocked milk ducts at least once or twice a week. bloody painful for me!
for me frozen flannels worked :) don't know why but would keep some in the freezer and pull them out when it happened wrap around the boob and then just feed until it unblocked.
hope you can carry on feeding:)

Oh you poor thing, that's rough. I had mastitis a couple of times and it was so awful. I was taught to use hot flannels at the start of a feed and ice cold at the end. Once the milk was flowing I had to massage the lumpy bits. Also try to position bubs so their chin points to the problem area.
Have you seen a lactation consultant?

Sorry it has been really hectic here so haven't been on in weeks, but thought I would do quick update before I head to bed
I saw a breast physician and she was great, she checked for everything incl cancer. Unfortunately she couldn't give me a defiante answer as to what the lump was because it had gone by the time I saw her . But as the ultrasound showed all my breasts as normal for bfing breasts and the fact that recently I had only had lumps and no fever etc, she concluded that they were likely inflammations rather than infections/mastitis. She suggested I take Evening Primrose as its a natural anti-flam, which I am now. I had 1 lump a week after I saw her but nothing since which is great.
So I am still bfing and thinking to bf longer than a year which was my goal/deadline
ETA oh and thanks weegee for the kellymom link, the info was really good
