For various reasons, we're looking at fulltime expressing breastmilk rather than BF (with supplemental formula topups if necessary). Has anyone done this, and what were your experiences? I'd like to know things like was the baby still demand fed (from previously EBM), quantity and timewise, and was the expressing done on a regular basis? What were the advantages and pitfalls of doing this?

I expressed for 6 months, but only because my son was too sick to BF. To be honest, I hated it. I found my supply wasn't nearly as good as it had been with my first DS - the pump doesn't do as good of a job as a baby would. I had to stay on large doses of medication to keep my milk supply up. I would express every 3 - 4 hours during the day and once during the night, anything less than that, and my supply dropped off. But in hindsight, my lack of supply could have been from stress of how my son was and the situation he was in.

I gave up expressing because I just didn't have the time to look after a baby and toddler, try to BF, then express, then tube feed.

I think its fantastic that you still want to give your son EBM. Expressing can be achieved, and seems like a lot of hard work at the time, but (as you already know) awesome benefits for your son.

The very best of luck with whatever you decide to do.

BTW, if you are thinking of expressing full time, invest in a good double pump, it will be worth every cent
