anyone have post traumatic stress disorder?
Ive been diagnosed with it after the horrific birth of my second son (I thought they dropped him and were leaving him for dead, and I saw him die and be brought to life)

Im currently waiting for a full assessment with the mothers and baby unit here in chch
But would love to chat to others and kinda know how they are dealing with it day to day

Thanks

Hi Trish,
I was diagnosed with it after Jack. I went through counselling for it and it really helped, just talking through things and getting things clearer in my head. Now it is all fine and i no longer look back on the birth thinking what if, or with sadness and fear. I was in denial for a bit and here is my post when I went through it all. I was lucky, dh was very supportive and so helpful when I thought I was losing the plot, also he was still off work as it was very early days with jack when it happened

PND- the warning signs & symptoms (The ones in Red are what I experience/feel)
*Feeling numb, empty sad & tearful a lot of the time
*Losing interest in the things you used to enjoy
*Difficulty bonding with your baby
*Finding yourself utterly exhausted yet unable to sleep or sleeping to much
*Having no appetite or interest in food. Or overeating
*Being unable to cope: feeling that you have to little time, are doing nothing well are unable to establish a routine
*Extreme mood swings, irritable & angry usually at the father of the baby
*Acute anxiety & feeling "driven", unable to rest while the baby is
*Panic attacks (racing heart, perspiring, feeling of terror)which may come on without warning (This is a major, Im on tablets for these!)
*Loosing interest in sex & general loss of confidence & self esteem
*Becoming forgetful & loss of concentration
*A fear of being alone or fear of being with others

*Feeling life is meaningless & having obsessive, negative or morbid thoughts
*Fears of harming others or your baby

Hi Trish,

Sorry u are having a rough time. I hope you will get some help soon. The Dr should be able to refer you for some appropriate counselling, and that plunket programme sounds good, wish we had something like that here.

I have PTSD and PND. Am on antidepressant meds, and recieve counselling and 2 1/2 hrs a week home help from Maternal Mental Health at the hospital. The first person I saw didnt help at all, but now I have an awesome maternal mental health nurse who is helping me with ways to address and cope with anxiety issues etc etc.

Very much still in the middle of it all. Feel free to ask any Q's.

Hope u get seen by the mother and baby unit soon. I first had a social worker, and it didnt really help at all. Seeing the maternal mental health nurse again today. She is coming here which is so good, dont have to worry about finding someone to mind Isla.

OMG just saw that you posted at 1 am! Is insomia a prob? Maybe u could get something from the dr to help u sleep! Eekk!

*reluctantly puts her hand up* I have tentatively been diagnosed with PTSD after the miscarriage and the chaos that was the gremlins early days. I found it really difficult to get a picture of Mercedes in her cot blue and not breathing out of my head, and I have had flashbacks to certain images associated with the miscarriage, but I'm not entirely sure that it fits the PTSD classification, altho my psychiatrist seems to think so

I hope you get seen by the mother and baby unit soon Trish, I can only imagine how stressful the first few weeks/months of Aidan's life were for you and it's not surprising you're left feeling a bit shellshocked! Hang in there, you will get thru it, and you know we're always here if you need us!

Oh thats good Trish! Good that they are looking at the whole picture to rule out other possible causes. Hope u get the results back soon.

Saw the maternal mental health nurse today. Im finding it so helpful. She has given me info on different relaxation techniques to try out, and talked through the process of beginning to challenging my thought processes.

Lol Emma! Unfortunatley I saw MMHN yesterday and forgot to talk about the PAFT lady. She(PAFT) came today, and it was actually fine. I said when she came in, that we are both sick, and I havent done any cleaning, cos I didnt wanna feel like she was looking around wondering why the place was in such a state..and it was fine. I think I was prob just being over sensitive and over-reacting. Im good at that these days!

You been and had you blood tests yet Emma?
Trish, have u got any results back yet?

Yes, yes I have! Woohoo! I'd been putting them off long enough, but the gremlins had their MenzB shots on Tues so I got the nurse at my GP's to stick me with a needle as well and should get the results some time next week. They're also checking my liver and thyroid function and iron coz apparently the meds I'm on can affect them.

I'm feeling a bit over the meds actually, I feel tired and yuck all the time with no energy and rather than admit I'm depressed I'll blame it on the meds!

Any news Trish?
Oh and Kellz your PAFT lady sounds like a bit of a dork, if she came here I'd hate to think what she'd find lurking under the couch

Hi Trish. Sorry u are still having a rough time. Yuk that u had to have surgery. Hope you are recovering well. How did your appt go? Hope it helped.

After finally getting some decent help from an awesome MMHN, we have just moved towns. I could be refered here, but my DH's Aunty is the receptionist at the hospital community mental health unit, and also I if I do go back to work eventually it will prob be at that hospiatl, so Im reluctant to be seen going there. DH's side of the family and not very supportive of mental health issues, and think people should "snap out of it" etc,...so they know nothing about my PTSD/PND. Hmmmm, what to do?!
