Not sure if this is the right place for this, but thought it might be best.

Was just wondering if others have had antenatal depression and how they coped, what worked for them, etc.

I think I might have this, have struggled with depression in the past and now am not sure what's preggy hormones and what might be depression so a bit confused, and am already seeing someone at the mental health services cos of lots of anxiety in early preg (I'm now almost 30 weeks) and "just in case" cos am at risk of PND.

Thanks for any insights.

Hi Kathy

I had a little anxiety with my last pregancy and the fact that my MW knew I had PND with my first so she kept a watch on it. Didn't amount to anything which was good for me until things went belly up and home with my hubby.

I have been told that maternal mental health in Palmy isn't the best (as in my dr told me they only take on really servere cases and I wasn't servere enough), but as you are already seeing someone at mental health it could be an idea to ask them if you can see someone now at MMH.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

I had antenatal depression with Jack due to the amount of stress with tests etc at the end of the pregnancy. I was put on fluox for it and given sleeping pills (depression, anxiety and insomnia are not a good mix!) I took myself off them 3 months after Jack was born. I think they really helped me through the rough stuff and the first few weeks.

It's great that you're getting on top of it though. I didn't even know of such a thing until I was diagnosed with it. And I'm the same, have depression but I still didn't see the signs (thought it was purely hormones)

Thanks for your replies ladies

Becks, I've already been assessed as to whether I come under the MMH people and I don't as I'm not postnatal yet and I'm not actually depressed (seems like some weird logic somewhere in there, but I guess they have to categorise it somehow), so am under the general staff (though have met with the maternal people) unless something gets worse or whatever.

I might ask about some more possible help, maybe drug-wise next time I see my contact there, just cos I'm struggling some days to stop bawling my eyes out and do anything.

thanks for the support

*hugs* I was referred onto MMH at 16 weeks because I was getting really really down about my ongoing morning sickness amongst other things. I was lucky (if you can use such a word with such a topic) that I had had a previous histiry of depression, and they were willing to see me. By the time they contacted me back to meet me things were slowly getting better, so I decided not to take them up on the offer to see them - in hindsight I kind of think that it may have been a good idea.

I'm guessing that they have used some form of scale to assess your situation in order to determine whether or not you come under their care. Hopefully the people who are keeping an eye on you will be in touch with MMH to keep them up to speed so to speak. Remeber that we are always here to vent to or just chat

Hey I went under MMH with this pregancy I had PND with my second baby and came of my med's when i got pregy did not cope without the med's so was referred to MMH.   For me coping was jsut being honest with myself when I got PND I did not do anything till mikey was 6 month's old. So this time round I spoke up early on for the sake of my family and myself.   I say just keep talking to who ever will listen.

I had severe antenatal depression when I was preg with the gremlins but it wasn't diagnosed till they were 8 months old. I've had it again this time round but I think it is more a continuance of the last episode which later became PND rather than a new episode.
I am seeing MMH, I have fortnightly therapy sessions and they are helping me put some strategies and supports into place for after baby is born to help me cope better than I did last time. I was on medication till 24 weeks but started having nasty side effects related to the pregnancy so had to stop taking it.
