Hi All :)
Dh and I are planning to TTC sometime near the end of this year (YAY!)

Ive been on the pill for 10 years now and am coming off it in april to give myself a few months to just "be natural" and let
my body sort itself out after so long.. im also trying to lose weight before TTC. my weight problems started when i started the pill. i started gaining weight as soon as i started the pill..and although working towards my goal- its been a slooooow road- taking 4 years to lose 14kg and a mighty struggle to maintain that and im not even at goal yet!
so my questions are..

did you gain weight when you started the pill?

what happened to your weight when you came off the pill?

did you find it easier/harder to lose and maintain your weight off the pill?

thanks guys- any opinions or advice would be great- i have NO idea what my body will do when io stop BCP- as an adult ive never been of it! i know everyone is different but any experiences would be fantastic!
TIA

Hi Toni

I came off the BCP (Yasmin) early December last year after being on it for 12ish years (we are planning to start TTC March/April).

I have experienced quite a few side effects: My skin became like that of a teenagers again, really bad acne which is only just starting to clear up now; I've been really emotional - crying at the drop of a hat - a sad song sets me off at the moment!; Other than the withdrawal bleed, I still have not had a period.

I think you're doing the right thing coming off the BCP so far in advance - it will give your body a good amount of time to get back to normal.

Regarding weight, my appetite has decreased quite a lot and I've lost about 2 kgs - so this is a good side effect! :)

I came off bcp in January, so this is my first cycle. I haven't had any problems adjusting.

I have lost and gained 10kilos both on and off bcp, pretty much back to where I started. I don't think the pill had any effect.

I have noticed my weight went up prior to af and during, but is back to where is was when I came off bcp.  Which I guess is my normal weight.

I guess it depends on why you went on the pill to start with, I only needed it for contraceptive, my cycle was regular before and is after. I was on it for 8 years. But hadn't been on it for 5 years prior to meeting Dh and starting again. Hope that makes sense.

I came off BCP 3 months ago. I have gained a bit of weight since then, however I think that is because of my age and the fact I am not exercising nearly as much as when I was on it.

I have to agree with Victoria - my skin is terrible, I got lots of pimples on my face and chest just before my last AF.

Also, my AF symtoms were a lot worse this last AF - quite emotional and grumpy, really bloated and terrible cramps - however, I don't know if this is because of coming off BCP or because I am more in-tune with my body know I am taking notice of these things IYKWIM?

Hi Toni,

After being off and on the pill for 12 years, I came off it about 18 months ago.   The only changes I now experience off the pill are lighter, more painful, irregular periods (have just been diagnosed with PCOS). I have also made the decision not to go back on BCP after BFP. Just a personal choice really, I'm trying to be more natural in terms of what I put in my body.

cool thanks guys!

gues si have a bit to think about....the original plan was to come off BCP in april, but then i started thinking why not come off now- so am looking for all the pros and cons. and i know you can get to know your bodya nd when you ov etc so you can avoin concieving, but to be honest its freakin scary the more i think about it! id love to be pill- free at the end of this AF (when it turns up but thats another story lol) but the idea of having nothing but my own body telling me when not to BD is freaking me out! is that normal? i guess after having relied on the BCP for my entire adult life i really dont know my body at all! and im 25!

think i might wait till april still- as if something accidentally happened before then im not sure id be mentally ready for that iykwim...

thanks again guys! off to chat to DH now about it all... see what he thinks.. any other advice in the meantime is most welcomed tho!

I was on the pill for 10 years and just came off it in December. My first AF came (not withdrawal bleed) 34 days later. My weight hasn't changed and it all feels pretty much the same except for a few extra spots on my face just before AF and also I have felt pretty bit*hy this month which I don't normally feel around AF - could be a co-incidence though as it is pretty hot & bothery at the mo!

I also think it is a good idea to come off BCP as soon as you feel comfortable doing so - it allows your body to get sorted and it allows you to get to know it again.

I know that many of you get to know your body and when to or not to BD, but like you Toni, I've been on the BCP for all of my adult life, and there is no way I'd know my body right away. Personally I'm not sure I'd ever bother paying enough attention, but certainly right at the beginning I'd be clueless, and thats when I'd actually want to avoid getting pregnant. So I've decided just to wait until I want to get pregnant before coming off. I'm young enough that its not a *race* to get pregnant, so if it took a while I'd be ok with that. I'm more scared of it happening too soon so I'll be staying on the pill till d-day.
I guess the best advice I can give is to ask yourself what are you more scared of - it happening too soon, or it taking too long?

i came of the BFP last year in about July i think... we were thinking of starting TTC then end of last year...

I have found i have gained weight and harder to keep it off... plus i have to really watch my exercise and food.. but other wise i feel fine.. Hate the old AF - never thought it was that bad... plus really sore boobs when AF is due...

Otherwise all in all well... My AF came back bang on 28 days which was happy with...

Snap Megs, and as for tracking my cycle I've found it remarkably easy, ewcm turned up CD13-14.  DH was working that weekend so no dramas around bd'ing.  As long as we avoid it around that time we'll be sweet.  Normal AF does suck, on bcp I was lucky to get more than a bit of spotting.

good point T rex..i think im more afraid of it taking too long..thats why i want to get off the pill sooner rather than later so i know my body a bit better when it does happen.. after talking to DH i think ill wait until after our 1 year anniversary to come off- simply for the selfish reaason that we are going away for 10 days over easter- camping up the west coast of the sth island, and the last thing i want is one of my first natural AF's to deal with while camping goodness knows where- as well as for the obvious reasons- its our anniversary after all... lol.

when we dome off BCP mid-april, if anything happened straight away by accident it would be a bit of a shock, but a pleasant one and well be totally able to handle it. right now, even tho its a matter of 2 months, im not sure im ready to have that risk hanging over my head just yet... is that weird?

the more i think about it tho, im really looking foward to getting to know my body and my cycles etc- could be quite fascinating lol.

think i just need a couple more months to come to grips with the idea really- never thought id be like that but now its coming to the crunch i just need a bit more time!

good to know lots of people find it easy to work it all out tho..thanks!
