How have other people reduced their infant's bottle feeds? Is it baby led (i.e. he/she wants less) or do you offer it less/smaller quantities?

DS has 4 bottles a day (3 x 200ml and 1 x 300ml at bed time). He eats approx 1 jar of food 3 x per day (including finger foods) but my karitane plunket nurse thinks it's too much milk and he'll eat more solids if I drop his milk consumption.

I am concerned about dropping milk feeds:
a. because we've only JUST got him sleeping through the night, previously he was hungry and
b. he's a big lad (not chubby but long and solid at 10.6 kgs) and so I feel he needs it.

The solids consumption is an issue (if you ask Plunket) as he doesn't really like eating off a spoon so it's hit and miss and we have to offer more finger food.

Excuse me if this is rambly. Instinctively I feel we're ok but karitane/plunket have other things to say.

Personally that does sound like a lot of milk but I can totally understand not wanting to disturb sleeping through. Do you offer solids or milk first? If you offer milk first, maybe you could try offering solids first then he might get more solids and start reducing his milk intake by himself.

I'm a very very big advocate of finger foods. We fixed all of Daniels eating by finger foods. I think they are great because they get to choose what they want to eat and how much, it's less stressful for everyone too and then they want to eat more.

Thanks kebakat. Milk times all depend on when he awakens but they are at quite separate times to meals. Like at very least an hour before or after bottle. In the morning when we are onto it we will give him breakfast before milk but this does not mean he'll eat more.

If he was breastfed you wouldn't know and you wouldn't worry. I would just stick with what you are doing and slowly he will like food more and more and I'm sure he will drop/reduce the milk feeds.

I let Spencer drop his of his own accord.

Cuppatea, you are so right!

DS has been off the boobie for a month now and it's great that he's not feeding from me every couple of hours, I should remember that and be grateful!
