I know I'm getting way ahead of myself as we're not even PG yet.... just wondering if anyone out there is concerned about ending up with PND?

I have had Major Depression in the past and have been "well" for the last 2 years and off meds for that same amount of time. I have read that around 15% of women end up with PND and if you've had MD before you're 50% more likely to end up with it.

Anyone else in the same boat?

Hiya,

I had been treated for depression twice prior to being pg.

I did end up with PND, however, I knew from about 7 days Post Partum that it wasnt just the baby blues. When my son was 11 weeks old I rang my husband in tears and asked him to make an appt for me with our GP.

I knew I wasnt coping and it was starting to take hold of me. I was lucky, I knew the warning signs and was able to get help in time and was even able to avoid medication!

I knew I was at a higher risk but I didnt really think about it much prior to the birth. If its going to happen, it will happen, you just have to be prepared and ask for help as soon as possible.

You might end up surprising yourself and just sail through

Good luck TTC, hope you journey is a short one!

Thanks melnel,

I must admit when I first read your post I felt a bit ill!!

But you've restored my faith... I do know the signs now, I now know I've had MD several times in my ife just not been aware of it. So hopefully I won't need to worry about it.

Was it similar to MD? Similar treatment and feeling?

Hope you're all good now

I was worried as well but luckily I didn't get. I had some days that I was quite down and emotional but they passed. The thing is you won't know until you get there and your MW will keep an eye out and give you info anyway.

Hi
I have had severe depression and anxiety in the past. I was advised of signs and symptoms of PND before I gave birth so knew what to look out for. I am happy to say that so far I have not suffered from PND (my lil girl is 12 weeks old)...touch wood.
As Melnel said if baby blues goes past the 7 days after birth might be worth while to talk to ur MW.
Good luck with TTC!!

i had PND with my 2nd child and it was undiagnosised for 10months, was a terrible time in my life. I do remember when he was 6 weeks old I told the plunket nurse and she wsnt interested so i just kept on going like that for a long time. I didnt have any previous history of depression so you maybe luckier than me and know the warning signs. Also when I was diagnosised my partner at the times mum was like you dont have PND and so my partner treated me like sh*t too.

If you have great support you will be fine with or without PNd.

I got severe PND complicated by PTSD after Jake was born but there were extenuating circumstances. I was depressed when I got pregnant too which didn't help matters any.
I know what to watch for (and so does DP poor man ) this time round but I'm actually feeling really confident. I think being prepared helps alot.

ETA lol got my acronyms mixed up

For me the warning signs were similiar to early depression signs. Tearful, insomnia, lack of appetite ( I was only eating as I knew I had to keep my milk supply up), no motivation.

I didnt experience any harmful thoughts to myself or DS and I did bond with him, but there were times that I just couldnt stand to be around him. It sounds terrible to say, but I was so exhausted (1-2 hours sleep a day is not helpful!) and wasnt thinking clearly. Plus he had reflux and for the weeks leading up to my mini breakdown he wasnt sleeping during the day and cried a lot!

AD were pushed on me but I only wanted them as a last resort. Depending on severity Maternal Mental Health are there to support you . ( I wasnt severe enough).

Like Babe I was also suffering depression when I fell pregnant on the back of a miscarriage and also PTSD from the birth. Both mild though in comparison to many women.

I think I was very lucky, I know me well and I know me unwell so I was not going to let it get to a point where it was really bad (and nor was DH).

This is a concern for me too...

I've had quite severe depression in the past, though i've been 'well' and treatment free since i was in my teens. I hope i can recognize any signs of PND...just posting to tell you you're not alone :)
