Hi girls,

I have a premmie baby who is being cue breastfed. He has had enormous problems with wind, and after a recent visit with a lactation consultant we have discovered he was quite badly tongue tied. Last week went like this..Monday - Plunket, Tuesday - Lactation Consultant, Wednesday - Immunisations, Thursday - Outpatient visit to the hospital to have his tongue released. Friday and today have been horrendous. Prior to diagnosis he was CONSTANTLY on me (I'm talking up to 11 hours a day in some instances) - and we put it down to him not having a complete seal on my nipple (I'm using a nipple shield btw). But since having his tongue released, he now gets very agitated on the breast, like he doesn't know what he should be doing. And although more of his feeds are 'normal', he is still having massively long awake times for a 7week old. The gas issue is getting better, but is still not 100 percent. I'm wondering if I'm having a supply issue? And if so, what can I do about it?

Any ideas gratefully received!!

Just some of my ideas: (hopefully someone else will be able to come in who is a real expert on BF etc.)

He may be still adjusting to having to relearn how to latch and suck after doing it a different way for 7 weeks and then getting his tongue tie snipped.

He may have had to try and suck quite hard to get milk out before his tongue tie was fixed and now when he puts in the same amount of effort into his sucking the milk comes too fast because he has the right latch now.

OR it might be the other way round in that it used to come quite fast but now when he tries to suck the same way as he used to - it doesn't work because his latch is not quite the same. So, the milk doesn't come as fast as he would like or was used to.

Your milk flow also may have to adjust to his different way of sucking.

Your milk supply will adjust soon hopefully.

If you think your milk is coming down too fast for him for the moment - try feeding with him in more of an upright position (this will help with the gas as well) and you could also try leaning back a bit more. I used to feed Jude with him pretty much in a sitting position beside me and me leaning as far back as I could - almost lying down! My supply settled down after a while

Thanks StaceyL - I hope you are right. Another long night was had here, but so far today things seem to be going ok (that said, he's been up nearly 2 hours and showing no sign of sleeping yet ).

I am no expert in BFing but when you say no sign of sleeping - do you mean no tired signs or that he is not going to sleep by himself? Just that at this age a lot of babies really require help to go to sleep - pretty much with mine I had to make them go to sleep (to the best of my abilities). So I would wrap, tuck into bassinette, leave - go back and rock etc - anything that would work in getting them to nod off to sleep.

Mandz - no tired signs, but he doesn't normally settle off to sleep by himself either. Normally requires a lot of burping and rocking to get him off to sleep after he has bee swaddled really well - those damn wiggly arms wake him up in a heartbeat.

girlygirl - have you tried carrying your boy in a wrap or sling to help him to sleep during the day?

Some days Jude just does not want to sleep during the day but a few minutes after I put him in our carrier, he has drifted off.
