Hi. I have just been prescibed citalopram by my gp which I will start tonight. Originally she thought I need to stop breastfeeding, but I told her about the www.mothersmatter.co.nz website that the PND plunket nurse told me about, as it talks about meds etc and breastfeeding.

I have also taken zopilcone sleeping tablets for the last 2 days and GP told me to give a bottle if bubs needed it within 5 hours of taking the tablet. But now she seems to think it's not necessary and I can breastfeed within that 5 hour window. Does that sound right? Last night she wanted take the bottle, the flow was too fast and she was choking on it, even though it's a newborn teat.

Janda if your GP is unsure, ask them to consult with Maternal Mental Health as they have Psychiatrists they can speak to to discuss your medication. I spoke to them today and they said GPs can do this and it sounds to me like your GP is not sure.

not BFing yet but very interested in this thread as i think im going to need to go back on AD's and plan to BF exclusively.

I was on loxamine before TTCIng but came off as was feeling good by then (hence being ready to TTC) and they were rated class D on the safe list A being the safest so i wasnt going to risk it....how can it be a class D and stil ok for BFing??

im really confused!!

Bamn I think it is because not much of the AD gets through the breastmilk and therefore into baby. Plus "they" say that often the beneficial effects of ADs on Mum outweigh the POSSIBLE sideeffects on baby.

If you are not sure then ask your GP/MW/MMH or for more info check out Mothers Matter website as they have info on ADs and bfing

just wanted to add also that the drugs are classed differently in pregnancy than in breastfeeding. One I am currently on is rated B for breastfeeding but D in pregnancy.

From what I understand a status of D means that if the benefits greatly outweigh the risks and taking an alternative medication is not an option, they you might still take it.

Oh, and I 2nd that mothers matter website. It is updated regularly and the people who give the information for it are really experienced

I'm really thankful for this thread as I have been wondering the same. when not-pregnant/breastfeeding, Fluoxetine has been a wonder drug for me. I came off of it to get pregnant (my very stupid choice as I had heard about a woman in the US suing due to a heart defect and that there was some research linking Prozac to heart defects). Have been anxious but generally ok throughout the pregnancy but from about 28 weeks have just completely crashed. Went to my GP who isn't keen to prescribe anything because of the pregnancy and basically I have ended up finding my own counsellor to talk to (appt tomorrow, thank god, as am just crying and crying every day).

Am certainly going to be knocking on my GP's door the day after the birth asking for some medication, and want to make sure whatever he gives me is safe for breastfeeding.
