I personally dont agree with people "working" out whats better for them in terms of hands outs .. thats imo.
You would be silly not to at least consider all sides of the situation. Working more = less time with your child/ren but sometimes more career options or a better life for your family. Working less might mean more time with your kids but less money for other things. Working out the financial pros and cons is just looking at the bigger picture, everything is a compromise when you have kids.
I suspect blossombaby was more talking about those who say "if I work 10 hours less then I get $x more govt handouts (but ill still keep them in the subsidised daycare, taking up someone elses spot who really needs it)", or if i have another kid then I get $x more handouts... Because she actually said in her post "hand outs" - not time with kids verses income (from actually working)
Speaking of working mums i sent my partner to pick up my girl today from daycare early because i was so upset about those triplets .. So sad :( One of things i looked at when looking for a centre is that is was ground level. I looked at a centre that was upstairs on a commerical property so quite high up and was licenced for 50 under 2 and 50 over 2s ........ and was put off the very reason how could they get out. so tragic.
Wow how many teachers did they have to have on at once to get a license for 100kids? How on earth could they carry/coax 100kids down a stairwell in an earthquake or fire!
Thats incrediable the Education system would allow that!!
Our centre our children go to is licensed for 42 children (8 under and 34 over) and has 10-12 staff on and 1 admin and 1 "lunch/cleaner" lady
That is sooo sooo sad about those triplets and rest of the children at the centre and 4 teachers! RIP little angels.
for me it is not worth me going to work and paying childcare I would practicaily be working for nothing..so my options are go to work and be poor or stay at home and be poor lol.

I have a 16 month old and am due for my second in december this year. i work full time and get nothing from IRD or WINZ. i am wanting to put the kids into child care when i go back when the new babay is 6 months old as i cant afford any more time off. does anyone here work with a partner and have 2 children under 3 know if they get anything from winz or IRD, or what daycare they go to and how they afford it ? its making me go crazy i have a mortgage to pay.
Some daycares give you a 5 or a 10 per cent discount off the second child if you've got more than one kid attending.

Not sure what your situation is but I guess you could always consider something like an au pair. Or do you have a family member who could mind your children - even one day a week to help keep costs down?
I have two under three and daycare is very expensive (we're in East Auckland). The sums for going back to work only added up because I have family members look after the kids two days a week. I pay the equivalent to my mortgage payment each week in daycare fees :-S. We don't qualify for any help from WINZ or IRD. The daycare does give us a 10% discount and the fees can vary quite a bit, so if you're working in a different area to where you live it's well worth checking d/c's and prices in both suburbs.
