Hi, I would be interested to hear what parents think is a reasonable rate to pay a babysitter like me in a small town. I am a mature ECE student and mother with plenty of experience looking for a way to top up my husband's earnings whilst I study full time. Most people I find round here are wanting a babysitter for seasonal evening work or an opportunity to do something they can earn money from by selling eg. hunting so the price needs to be realistic otherwise it is not worth it to them. I have been saying $15 per hour for two children, $10 after they are in bed but parents seem to be very very happy with that. Am I short changing myself? Should I charge more? Thanks!

Hi just saw your post and I'd like to reply.
I live in a small town area in the north island where we give cash (not declared for tax purposes) to our Child Minder. Her drive is 20 mins and 20 mins back, so we give her $10 petrol money plus $15 an hour plus $5.00 extra because she brings her own resources for doing crafty activities. She takes care of our 4 and 3 year old.
Soooo , yes I would say you are right on the nose if you are given cash for your work.
All the best 😊

Awesome, thanks!I have done work as a home-based child carer in my own home too and done all the crafty things etc. but that is a bit different to private babysitting as parents have a regular booking and get subsidies etc. so care is cheaper and I get less money but it is regular money and I can care for up to four families at a time that way...so with private babysitting it needs to be a bit more money really but I wanted to make sure I wasn't under charging. So good to know what you pay, gives me an idea 😊

And yes this will be cash work. Home based was $7 an hour per child approx and have to pay tax too 😕
