Poor DP was in an accident this morning. He's fine....our car...not so fine. The salvage truck driver said the car looks like a write off. Have had one assessor from the insurance company look at the car, and said it's a write off....but we now have to wait for a second assessor to look at the car....which can take up to 7 days!!.
Has anyone written their car off and had the insurance paid out...what the the process like?. We definitely needed a new car, won't get that much of a pay out cos it was an old car (that my lovely dad gave to us!)...so kinda funny how things work out........especially since DP was saying the other day how much it would suck to have a crash during this time of year! lolz.....musta jinxed himself........................oh and how did he crash???.....lets just say don't SNEEZE and drive lolz

It all depends if it was his fault or not and how bad the accident was. He must have had one hell of a sneezing fit! Glad he's okay.
When I wrote off my parents car when I was a teenager it took a good few weeks for the assessment and then even longer for a payout for a new car!

Yep, I've done it . The insurance company went out to look at the car after a day or two - they decided it would cost too much to fix so I got the verdict within a couple of days. The payout came within a week. I was gutted - my first car and I rear ended a campervan

Sorry about the accident - definitely not a good time of year!

Yeah , he was at fault, rear ended a work van. The van only suffered a small dent...where as our car's front it all crushed, the belts inside the engine are snapped...the whole engine has shifted from it's original placing...radiator is wrecked (leaked water all over the road)...abit of a mess I must say lol. Our insurance at the mo will cover repairs to the van, and loss of income for the driver. Well will definitely be a busy time for insurance company's this time of year!. Will just have to sit pretty and wait for the verdict....the cost to fix the damage would probably be more than paying out for the insurance claim....and one time when I crashed DP's boyracer car (he forgot to put me on the policy!) is was gonna cost over $3000...and that was to fix a headlight..and put a new bumper on lolz.

Haven't done it myself but paid out on plenty. The process can take a little longer depending on the amounts involved and the fact that the assessors need to get several prices and submit a report to the claims officer handling the claim. In addition...this is never a good time of year for these things to happen!

A car will get written off for two reasons....cost too much to fix or structural damage.

I think it's highly likely to be written off judging from the pics I've seen! Plus it was an old car with a $5000 valuation on it. On a good note DP only has 5 days of work til his holidays, so hopefully we'll be all set when he returns

My brother wrote off my mum's car (not his fault, taxi ran a red light) but it ended up working in their favour coz they'd had it insured for the same amount since it was new and not reduced the amount for depreciation so he was able to buy a brand new car with the payout.

It depends what type of cover you have for that Emma - most policies pay out the sum insured or the market value of the car - whichever is lower. Some companies have agreed value policies (where they pay out the sum insured regardless of the actual market value) but they're not that common.

I worked for an insurance company (with the assessors themselves) The process is usually rather quick especially if its an obvious total loss. If the cost of the repairs are 75% or more than the value of the car then they write it off.
If its border line (ie needs to be quoted for repairs to get an estimation) it usually takes a bit longer.
Depending also on what kind of policy you have, you may be paid out the "Agreed value" or they may arrange a pre accident valuation and pay you out on the basis of what the condition of the vehicle was before the accident, and what it would sell for today.
That can be a long process!
You may also be entitled to a hire car while your car is being assessed, who are you insured with?

Glad to hear your DP is ok though!

We have comprehensive cover with State...we also have the agreed value thingy..which is $5000, the car was in good condition before the accident so hopefully if it does get written off we'll get agreed value. We didnt opt for the hire car add on, so luckily we've sorted out with the inlaws to use one of their vehicles for next week while DP is still at work.

Here's our poor car! lolz.....lots of damage underneath the bonnet too...and passenger door is jammed shut

My car was written off a couple of years ago by a little old lady running up the back of me. It was an old car and I got more from the insurance than I would have if I'd sold it. The car was driveable until I got sorted out with another one, I just couldn't open the boot. The insurance company paid me out after getting two valuations and the car was here for about a week before they picked it up giving me time and money to go shopping for a replacement.

My car got wrote off in England twice. The first time someone hit it whilst it was parked outside my house and their insurance gave me the money it was worth, about 1200 pounds plus I got the car back. It only had minor damage, I had it repaired for a couple of 100 pounds (wasn't fussed about the bent bumper etc) and put it back on the road. Then 6 months later a bus caused me to crash, i.e I could hit the bus or the parked car, so I hit the parked car, guy behind me had a choice hit the bus or hit me so he hit me. The damage to the front of the car (deemed the buses fault) wrote the car off, the damage to the back of the car (blamed on the guy behind me cos he should of been able to stop) also wrote the car off. It took over 6 months for me to get the money for the car and also damages for lost work, whiplash and the inconvenience of it all. Thankfully I had paid a little extra on my insurance, about 20 quid, to have a lawyer if anything like that happened. I got 1200 for the car (not bad when I had already got that 6 months ago as well) and 2000 for my injuries and the inconvenience of it all.
I think my one was purely complicated by the fact that the bus company was trying to claim the crash wasn't their fault even though the police nearly pressed charges against the bus driver and also they then had to decide who paid for what as there were 4 vehicles involved. The bus, the poor people whose parked car I hit, me and the guy that hit the back of me. Oh and there was also the tree that I pushed the park car into but the tree was ok.

DH wrote his car off a few months ago. Wasn't his fault though - some lady ran into the back of him at the traffic lights and pushed him into the car in front of him. We have comprehensive insurance through our bank (which I beleive is underwritten by State) so he called them as soon as he got home and they said take it to a panel beater and get an assessment. He took it to one they recommended and the panel beater said just from looking at it that it was probably going to be a write off (car was insured for $2500 and the damage was at least $3000). He made his assessment gave it to the insurance company the bank then rang to say it was a write off. They arranged a tow truck to come collect it and the money was in our account within a week. The whole thing took less than 2 weeks.

Looks like a write off to me
You should have it sorted in no time, and yup, you should get the $5000 too.

Sorry to hear about your car & DP! Glad that he is okay but yep the car looks written off! Hope the process doesn't take too long for you and make sure you tell DP not to talk about any car crashes in the future so that he doesn't jinx himself

I wrote off my car a couple of years back too. I was rear-ended and shunted into a car infront of me. I got my payout within a week but there were several reasons to that. First, there was a police report which helps identify who was at fault. Secondly the person at fault admitted it and also was onto their insurance company pretty quickly (and were insured!). All my insurance company had to do was get the vehicle assessed, a copy of the police report and then contact the insurance company of the person at fault. Once that happened - I had the money in my hand five days later!

It does depend on your insurance company too - have heard others who have taken a good month to do the same thing. Hope it all goes smoothly and quickly for you - especially at this time of year.

Thanks everyone. Yup DP was very vigilant about it all, he crashed into a parked work van, immediately rang the insurance company, car was taken to salvage yard, DP contacted the work place of the van and gave details. Hopefully by the end of the week it's all sorted...though I would understand if it took longer due to the time of year. State has been great with smaller claims we've had, so hopefully it's trouble free for this as well.
