Unassisted, that is.

I keep reading that babies are sitting up at 5 months - Alex will be 5 months on Christmas day and he hasn't even rolled over yet (although he's very close to it). When did your baby sit up unassisted?

Also, I can't quite picture the mechanics of it. Do they sit up from their back or their tummy? How does it work? Can I do anything to help him?

Sam started sitting unassisted at about 4 and a half months, but has abnormally strong abs and we used a bumbo for a few months before that. To be honest most of Sam's little friends are only just starting to sit on their own now at 7 months old.
As for getting themselves up there, that is a while off yet. I would imagine that will come at around the same stage as crawling.

I guess I am just trying to say that Alex is completely normal. All babies do things at their own schedules.

Rolling doesn't have to happen first. As Kryssi got more and more interested in toys, we would prop her up either with us sitting behind her or with pillows, and little by little we discovered (in time) that she could stay on her own. As for getting there, all my girls have figured that out about the same time as crawling - because it's similar to crawling backwards and getting stuck lol

Spencer is six months and still doesn't sit up unassisted. I just plonk him down in the sitting position and he can nearly support himself, He will put his hands on the floor infront of him, but has a tendency to pull himself right forward and then rolls onto his back. The other thing I do is sit him on my tummy with his back resting on my legs at a slant, he then pulls himself forwards and puts his hands of my chest and laughs and dribbles all over me but it encourages him to keep his head up rather than getting distracted by his new favourite toy...his feet.

I hope that makes some sense. Non of the babies in my coffee group were sitting at 5 months and only one is now doing it at 6 months so I wouldn't panic yet and if he is trying to roll i'm sure he will do it soon. I like to give Spencer lots of naked time as he can move so much better than when in nappy and clothes.

Ella has just started (as in yesterday) sitting up by herself- only for small periods of time through (then she either falls over to her side  or falls face forward). I have to put her in that positon through and I don't think she will be able to do it herself until she is crawling.

I wouldn't worry, as I think 5 months is still quite young for them to sit up by themselves- for some reason I have 6 months in my head when they would normally start to do this, but i have no idea where I got that info from.

Elle was able to sit in a sitting position without support from 4.5 months ( we would place her on the floor in that position), walked at 12months, rolled at 13mths, got into a sitting position on her own at 13.5 months and crawled at 14 months!!!! Talk about doing things backwards!!

She is 100% on track developmentally now...she just reached gross motor skill milestones in a slightly different order than most. There is a HUGE range of normal.

Yeah evryone does things as such different times! Isla wasnt even able to sit up unassisted at all til 6 months, let alone actually getting from the ground up to sitting herself, that was more like 8 months! Was crawling at 10 months. She is almost 14 months and is not yet walking or standing up unassisted, or getting up to a standing position unassisted.

Brenna could sit unassisted at 5 months but did nothing until comando cralwing at 8 months then at 10 months she finally started rolling (and getting from tummy/back to sitting) then crawled properly at 11 months and now at 13 months is walking and climbing They are all so different

James is 5.5 months and can only sit unaided for maybe a min at the most before he notices his toes and nearly goes face first on teh floor.
Haleigh was sitting around 5months, crawling at 4months, standing/walking round furniture at 6.5months and walking solo at 9/ 9.5months she was never a fan of rolling
James prefers to sit only when its food time on the chair, he's been rolling since 2months and can move a little bit foward but would much rather chill on his tummy

Daniel can sit unassisted for about 10 seconds max lol.. then he flops over to his side when he reaches for something. He can sit for quite a long time if someone is supporting his nappy area though.

Charlotte didn't sit unaided until about 6.5-7 months but even then I had a pillow around her to ensure that when she did lose concentration, it didn't hurt falling sideways and hugging the floor.

Kaleb was sitting at around 5 1/2 months but in the last couple of weeks he's stopped . If I sit him up he leans back and inevitably falls backwards. Not sure if if has something to do with his movement - he's started to commando crawl properly and does a crawl/shuffle backwards as well as lots of up on hands and feet actions. Maybe he's just lost interest in it? Bit of a pain though as means I'm back to holding him in my lap to feed him solids when we're out.

Hannah sat unaided for long periods really early - before 4 months. But then she didnt do anything else until 11 months! She rolled once or twice around 8 months, then crawled and walked within a week. So yeah, they defintiely do it all in their own way.

yup Astin is the same!! he knows too well how to strain and pull himself up to sitting from a half lying position but will only sit there for a bit before he reaches for his feet and then its all over rover!!

I cant quite remember with Bay - i know he didnt roll at all really and he would just prefer to lay there until he was 9ish months when one day he just rolled over and pulled himself up on the couch and then was walking within weeks!!! it was truely weird!! and DH and i were litterally sitting there with our jaws on the floor when he did it!

Hi

just like everyone has said there is a huge range. The most important thing to remember is that he will do it when he's ready.

There is two ways either he is taught to sit, by propping him with up pillows. Or does it himnself usually rolls, crawls and while crawling they learn how to sit then pull to stand e.t.c. Both ways are fine. It's just what ever you want to do. I know some mum's who don't sit their babies and want them to explore on the floor first on tummy and back as they have more natural movement that way.

I have chatted to plunket about it and they say if not sitting unsupported by 10 months then start to worry. Tummy and floor time is more important than sitting. There is an excellent book on movement called baby moves can't remember whose it by but there is a website it's a nz book too.

So don't worry my babies 8 months and doesn't sit unsupported but he has excellent movement, rolls a lot and moves backwards, forwards on tummy and back.

Every babies different, my friends baby has just learnt to sit after crawling and he's 9 months.

Well Josh still isn't sitting unaided but he is crawling and pulling himself up to stand so i'm not too worried. Plunket nurse was and I took him to see a paed neuro developmental nurse and she gave us some exercises to do and he is slowly getting there.

Andrew on the other hand was 5 months when he was sitting by himself.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Lily sits and plays unsupported now, she started with short periods of a few seconds, to a few minutes around 4 1/2 months, and now can go for ages, reaching and turning without falling - though not every time! She also commando crawls (ha ha, it is so slow, she goes about 10 cm in about 20 minutes!)

The thing is both DH and I were early movers, I think i was walking at 9 months (god help me if that pattern continues!) and I do think there is a heritability component.

The important thing to realise is that in the scheme of things, it is really cool when they do new stuff, but it means nothing, unless there is a physical reason for a long delay.

Caleb started getting to sitting position from the crawl position at about 6 months. He had been practising getting up on his hands and kness and just suddenly sat up one day it was also not long before he actually started crawling. If we sat him in the sitting position before that he was not able to hold it for very long without support.

All babies do things when they are ready and at various times so dont worry at all. Ignore my little monster who does not know the meaning of sitting still so wants to do everything in a hurry. Most of his friends around his age still cant get to sitting on their own.

I think Jack was around 7 months when he got into a sitting position him byt being in a crawling position and then putting his bum backwards over one leg. But could sit unsupported if I put him in a sitting position at maybe 5.5 months? He was never a roller either just started crawling around.

Caprece can sit unsupported for a wee bit but has to have pillows (or a big brother) behind her.

I think sitting up unsupported at 5 months is when they get put into that position, not get into on their own. You may find Alex is pretty good at sitting if you just have him on your knee or in the pram.
