I've recently been told that I am gluten intolerant. Suddenly I feel this overwhelming urge to buy lots of different types of GF flours (and nice containers for them as well, of course!) and have gone through our cans in the pantry and marked most of them with G or GF for ease of reference (particularly for DH who is the cook most nights).

I feel like I need a new stash of recipes and I feel rather nervous using the kitchen when it's not completely clean.

I'm also watching one of my girls in particular quite closely because I have a suspicion she might have a similar intolerance and it might lead to her scatterbrained-ness - or it might just be her personality.

How were you, when you first started out with intolerance/allergy awareness?

Freaked out! It was so much to take in at first, but now its just second nature.

I highly recommend the Allergy NZ cook book here

The Allergy NZ website should have a bit of info for you too. Oh and that health food shop in Terrance End (Organic Living?) has heaps of gluten free stuff.

Thanks Aimee. I guess I am feeling pretty overwhelmed. We've recently started shopping at the Bulk Barn (Bin Inn) and they have a lot of GF flours etc there, it's where we're heading tomorrow to get some GF baking goods as well as our usual shop. I have my own batch of brownie (which is stodgy but at least it takes like chocolate, cause everyone else can have bikkies!) in the pantry which no one is allowed to have, and have been taking it to and from work as well. I'm gonna give GF bread a go tomorrow but it doesn't sound as easy as gluten bread

The kitchen thing freaked me out too big time, esp when they were tiny and I was making up bottles etc. I was so anal about making sure everything was clean and hadn't been in contact with any milk, cheese etc.
But with an intolerance you don't have to worry so much, if you do get the odd trace of gluten it won't do you much harm.

Yep, pretty much what Emma said.  Good luck with it - I hope you see a good improvement with your new diet.  It's a real pain reading every label, but it does become second nature soon enough.  I like the idea of your "G, GF" labels too.  At home we have a shelf for Ella-friendly foods only in the pantry, fridge and freezer.  Being organised really helps, I think. 

Oh - New World have tons of gluten-free goodies.  Not cheap, mind.

Andie I have a shelf too, but DH can reach it Naughty! So he has some of my brownie while I'm out tonight, I say hey that's not fair, he says "you can eat fruit" Geez the support I get!!
