Topic: Progesterone pessaries qs Posted: 11 June 2009 at 11:13am |
I had my appt yesterday with a specialist about my recurrent mc's. Because they have all been very early mc's, he has given me some progesterone pesseries to use. I have to start them on day 21 and then have a blood test on day 30 to see if I am pg. If not then I have to stop them so my period will start. So now I've done a bit of research on google, I have a few questions if anyone has any answers?
1. If I don't fall pg, how long after stopping will my period arrive? And does it stuff up your next cycle?
2. If I do fall pg, but still miscarry, I presume I won't get any spotting or bleeding so will only know by hcgs? Again would I just stop the pesseries and I will start bleeding?
3. Will I get pg symptoms even if I'm not pg?
4. Exactly how messy are they? I have to use 2 3x a day. Will a liner be ok or will I need a pad? And neither the doc or nurse mentioned anything about lying down after using them but on a few sites I found, people were saying to lie down for half an hour afterwards?
Ummm, I think that is all for now! Thanks heaps

Thanks for asking these questions KH25, i start on the pessaries this cycle and was wondering the same thing. My specialist told me to take them the day after ovulation and do a HPT 14 days later, if neg stop taking them and my AF should arrive a couple of days later. The nurse told me that a liner is sufficient and also didn't say anything about lying down.
Not too sure about your other questions but will be interested in hearing peoples answers.

I didn't start taking them until I got my BFP at 13DPO, and was on one pessary 3x a day so not sure about the first couple of questions. I can say that a liner should be sufficient though. I never lay down (imagine how that would look at work!!!) nor was I ever told to.
As for the pg symptoms...I think it was Kellz who posted a questions about wondering whether the prog pessaries were actually helping her have LESS symptoms when she was pregnant - a few people replied and said it's entirely dependant on the person. I took them from 4w to 10w pregnant and got barely any symptoms - just some nausea and sore boobs (which I had from ovulation anyway), both of which weren't too bad although sometimes I wished I could just throw up to get rid of the seedy feeling!!!
Which pessaries did he give you? I was on Utrogestan and they don't appear to be subsidised so can be quite expensive - but they definitely worked!!! I hadn't carried a pregnancy past 6-7 weeks before these two came along (and these two are currently kicking me as I type).
Good luck to both of you

Minik8e, you say they aren't subsidised and quite expensive, how much were you paying?? I got the Utrogestan pessaries and take 6 a day and it cost $69 for 15 days. I think there is another type which costs 10x this amount.

Kicker, good luck to you!! We can share icky sticky stories together lol
Yup I've got those ones aswell - but am paying $26 for a box, so $78 for 15 days They better bloody work lol!
Sorry, I'm not familiar with your story - have you had recurrent mc's aswell and at what stage (if you don't mind me asking). It is interesting that you have been told to start them straight after ov and I have to wait a week, especially when I think I have an implantation prob... suppose I better do as I am told though!
Thanks for your info too Kate - yeah I can't imagine Ashleigh would let me have a lie down! In fact it's gonna to be a mission just getting enough privacy to insert them lol!

I was paying $33 for a box, and of course took them for 6 weeks, but half the dose that you have to - so it was $99 for me or thereabouts (maybe because they had to order them in for me??). I'm fairly sure my problem was with implantation as well - not sure whether it had something to do with my endo or what, as all our blood tests came back clear.

I was told to take them straight after O a i have a short luteal phase (8 days) and we are trying to extend it and keep a pregnancy.
My story... took 6 years to get preggers with my daughter, we fell a month before we were due to do IVF, then took 2 months to fall pregnant with both my loses. I had two missed mc at 11 and a half weeks but baby only grew to just about 7 weeks. I didn't really want to wait for a 3rd mc before we investigated so just went to a FS to have all the bloods and see where to go from here. So i have graduated from primary infertility to secondary infertility!!
I hope the stories we share aren't too yucky I have heard mixed stories about them too.

Hiya,
Just thought I would jump in here, sorry I can't answer most of your questions but can advise they are a little messy.
I am currently taking them 2 x 3 times daily as I've just had TER through IVF and have to take them if lucky enough to fall pg until about 10 weeks.
I haven't heard about having to lie down after taking them either though and just a liner should def be ok, sorry if TMI but occassionaly gets a bit more messy if coughing or exerting yourself if you know what I mean.
Good luck to everyone!!

I have been using progetserone cream from a natural health dude- firstly to regulate my periods to help me concieve- now to maintain pregnancy.
1) When I was using it to try and have a more normal 28 day cycle was using it from day12- when your bosy normally starts producing progeterone,..and stopping at day 26, then getting period on day28, so I guess you would also expect to get your period within a few days of stopping the pesseries.
2) I would think you would still gte bleeding if u mc cos the wall etc has got to go somewhere, the first few months I was still getting my period before day 26 when I was due to stop the cream- obviosly the pesseries will be more progesterone than I was using tho.
3)Nope you wont. My pms symptoms lessened, although apparently it can make u constipated, and I think it was Kate that told me when I asked a question about lack of preg symptoms when on progesterone, that sometimes the early preg symptoms can be worse, but hers where mild too.
Hope that helps, I know Im not in the same boat and using a diff form of progersterone, but surely most of its the same!
Really hope it works for you.

Great thread!
I am also taking uterogestan 2 pills 3x daily. They seem to be doing the job so far too because after 3 mc (two of which I took progesterone tablets) I finally had a scan that showed a heartbeat this morning. I am only 7 weeks but that is further than I usually get. I started a couple of days after ovulation.
With the prog tablets I found AF arrived as usual so I stopped taking them then. But generally a home test 14 days after ovulation and if not preg then stop them.
I also had spotting and bleeding when I miscarried even on the progesterone.
I did get preg symptoms from the progesterone even when I wasnt preg - just sore boobs.
A liner is totally ok - I change the liner when I insert the afternoon pessary.
No you don't need to lie down - it is just the goo around the active ingredient which leaks back out I was told. Although I take mine at 630 am 230pm and 1030pm so for the early and late ones I do lie down after insertion.
I am hopeful that these are the miracle Ive been waiting for , It worked for minik8e and it seems to be working for me too.
YAY YAY YAY!
I think I pay nearly $40 a box from fertility associates in Wellington - where are you all getting the cheaper ones from?

Thanks guys. We are very excited - and still terrified of course. I wont be taking anything for granted this time around!
My Fertility Associates guy was arse too - and was down from Auckland helping out. It wasnt Freddy someone was it?
He basically told me progesterone doesnt work and there was nothing wrong with me I should just keep trying and eventually one would survive - I was furious! He even refused to discuss surrogacy and treatments for LPD with me! That reminds me I must get around to filing that complaint...

JHS thats exactly who it was... Freddie G aka arse IMO. Yep i told him that after 6 years of infertility that i was charting and seem to ovulate round day 18/19, he basically told me that was impossible and i ovulate day 14.. this is without testing. He tends to just dismiss a lot of things, i know a couple of people that have have been very unhappy with him.

Hi all just thought I'd jump in. So I have had for misscareges in a row I am now 8 weeks pregnant and just been put on utrogestan 100mg to start taking twice a day till I am 12 weeks. Cost me $70 for 60 tablets. Now I have to take them vaginally so my question is after taking one after a few hours I went pee and little white stuff came out is this normal or did it not work and came out. It wasn't a lot I'm just worried I didn't put it far enough. Only started today so very new to this. And I pray that it helps.

Who did you ladies see to get prescribed the suppositories. I am struggling to find anyone to prescribe this to me. Do you need to see a specialist/obstetrician privately?
