I wanted to share my lap and dye experience, as this is the sort of information I was looking for before hand!!! Do keep in mind that everyone is different, and my lap was only diagnostic. Might be a bit of a novel so apologies in advance…..

Had been TTC 15 months when saw our specialist (chose to go privately to speed things up – only had to wait 2 weeks vs 6 months, best $160 I’ve spent!), due to having painful bowel motions during AF he wanted to check for endometriosis, so recommended a laparoscopy and dye and put me on wait list. I rang the booking person and asked to be put on the “short notice” list (eg if someone else cancels you can get called up to see if you can fit in instead). I was waiting 2 months including Christmas break and got the phone call to say can you have surgery in one week – yes! So definitely go private for appointments and short notice list if you can…

4 days before hand did pre-op appointment – took 4 hours and met with anaesthetist, surgeon, junior surgeon and a nurse, plus blood tests. Was quite disappointed as surgeon said this was a “diagnostic” lap only which meant he would only remove very mild endo or other issues – if anything more serious than that we would then discuss treatment options and might have to have another lap. Also didn’t realise they intubate you to help you breathe, which scared me a bit!

Nil by mouth from midnight, then to hospital at 8am. Put on the lovely surgical gown, said goodbye to DP, then wheeled up to waiting area for surgery at 9.30am. Got IV put in left hand, and then into surgical room (much smaller than I thought!) and onto the bed, very quickly got given my drugs and everything faded out (no counting from 10 or anything!).

When I begin to remember again it was 11am, I had a very sore throat and dry mouth, plus shoulder pain. Got given painkillers, IV fluids and lovely heat packs on my shoulders. No nausea, just feeling super tired. Got told I had to wait for surgeon to come at 4pm to let me know the results. Encouraged to eat and go to the toilet (more on this later!). Unfortunately at about 3.30pm I made the mistake of getting up to toilet for the second time and thinking while I was up I should get dressed. Umm, a bit much for me, got very dizzy, hot and nauseous and had to lie down for a bit!

Surgeon came at 4pm and told me I had stage 3 endo, particularly around my bowel, bladder and right ovary which was 3x bigger than normal, and showed me some pictures. Discussed where to from here (basically: dye showed tubes good so gave me a 20% chance of conceiving naturally in next 3 months due to the dye flushing them, then if not UTD to decide if surgery to remove endo or straight to IVF, I think he was encouraging IVF). Had a good cry, then got dressed and home for 6pm, with a 1.5hr drive home.

Unfortunately, I was in urinary retention, I did tell the nurse I was only peeing little bits at a time and my abdomen was more swollen than earlier in the day but she didn’t say much. By the time I got home I was getting uncomfortable and needed to pee put couldn’t, rang the registrar on call. Sooo, I ended up back at my smaller local hospital a few hours later getting a catheter put in, man the relief!!!! Drained 1200mls of pee, and catheter actually didn’t hurt like I thought it would. They then sent me home. Oh dear, 3 hours later, same feeling! Rang registrar again, she was mad they had taken the catheter out and sent me back and told them to leave it in. So finally home in bed, 2am with a frigging catheter and leg bag!!!

Day 2 felt very tired, and shoulders still sore (this is from the gas they use to blow up your belly, it irritates your diaphragm and the pain radiates to your shoulders), but no abdo pain and only the odd spot of vaginal bleeding. Stayed in bed most of the day, couldn’t read or watch TV as too much concentration. Stopped taking the codeine. Day 3 feeling a bit better, but shoulders still sore, and only coping with rubbish TV eg Oprah and house decorating shows!

Day 4 back to the main hospital to get the catheter removed. They explained I had retention probably because the surgeon had touched my bladder when checking the endo, and bladders are “shy”! After a few checks over a couple of hours (measuring wee output, and also ultrasound scan), gave me the all clear and off home. Felt a different woman without that catheter!

Day 5 – stopped taking panadol. Able to read a book and do some stuff on the computer, walk around the house, bend over and lie in most positions in bed.

Now Day 6 and feeling good, still tired though and need to make sure I take good break from activity or else I get grumpy!

All in all, it wasn’t as bad as I thought (apart from the urinary retention!), not nearly as painful as I imagined but then I had nothing removed. I was upset about the findings, but it is so good to know what is going on in there now. Fingers crossed for the next 3 months

Here are my tips for dealing with lap and dye:
1.     Make sure you have someone with you for the first 48 hours post op
2.     Ask your surgeon to send you a copy of his report, as you probably won’t remember everything he told you after the surgery
3.     Take your own food to eat when you wake up – they only had yuck egg sandwiches and soup available in hospital. I sent DP out for bananas and yoghurt.
4.     Ask for some throat lozenges or something to suck on, or have your own as your throat could be sore from the tube. Also lipbalm before and after op.
5.     Make sure you can pee properly before you leave hospital! And a catheter isn’t as bad as you think…
6.     Ask if you can take the heat packs home for your shoulders, if not buy some, they are great (mine are 3M Nexcare gel ones).
7.     Take some pillows in the car – put one across your stomach before you put on your seatbelt.
8.     If you live a while from the hospital, do think about staying closer to the hospital the first night post op so its easier if you have complications. If you are driving a distance, ask about getting some anti nausea drugs for the drive home and take an extra pillow for your head so you can sleep.
9.     Have some straws at home as makes drinking much easier when in bed.
10.     Have easy to eat, light foods at home like soup and yoghurt. I didn’t want anything sugary or fatty.
11.     Also some prunes or other laxatives if you continue to take codeine or are prone to constipation! I had no pain with no 2’s post op thank goodness.
12.     Have magazines or easy to watch TV for the first few days, I had a stack of big books and movies that have not touched!
13.     Definitely take at least a week off work if you can, I don’t think I will have enough energy or concentration for an 8 hour day even Day 8 post op – but everyone is different and guess it depends on your job.

I also found this website helpful:
http://amberrains.wordpress.com/laparoscopy-checklist/

That’s all I can think of for now, hope someone out there found it helpful, feel free to ask questions if you want! Or add your own experiences/tips too…

What a good idea, writing it all down for people yet to go through it. For anyone interested in the information, here's some additional points from my experience:

- When I had my op, they removed quite a bit of endo (not investigative like yours) and the filled me up with some kind of liquid afterwards to prevent the open scars sticking together. This leaked out slowly, so I was waking up in a puddle all the first night.

- They put a catheter in straight after the op (I woke up with it), so don't be too surprised at that. And I found it very much not a big deal, in fact it was really nice not to have to worry about getting up to pee for the first day, because when I did get up I was dizzy like you lala.

- I was really tired for the first couple of days after; falling asleep reading tired. Not sure why!

- If you have PCOS as well as endo; my surgeon (who was also my FA Dr, she works in two practises) drilled my ovaries at the same time. It looks gruesome (she gave me photos) but I totally credit it with getting me to ovulate the cycle after my op (and hence the wee man in my ticker below). It might not hurt to ask!!

No, you're asleep when they put it in Emma, but I was awake when they pulled it out which was horrible!

That's interesting that you couldn't wee afterwards Lala, because I had the same problem but they never mentioned that it was common, I thought I was just odd!

Emmap - I think I was in the actual operating room for less than 2 minutes before I drifted off, and I don't remember tube in or out. I thought I would be super nervous that morning and while waiting to go in, but actually wasn't - I just kept reminding myself why I was doing it (eg to have a baby!!!), and was thinking more about the results rather than the actual experience/operation and after. I found all of the staff really lovely at DPH so am sure you will be in good hands! Good luck for April...

LR - yeah, I was worried that needing catheter was really bad (eg I had been damaged), but because endo right around bladder they must have handled it to see it all, and its just really sensitive apparently! Certainly no problems now which is a relief.

Good Thread lala1739 :-) I've been wanting to share my experience for ages...

What I'm about to tell everyone is not to scare but to inform. PLEASE note 99% of laps are done without any complications...

I had a lap last year after TTC 3yrs and was told I had grade 4 endo...after I woke up from the general, I started vomiting and my heart was racing, I then got transferred to a bigger hospital, they thought that they may have nicked my bowel when removing the endo. I was told that I needed another surgery to determine what was going on.... and it was possible I may wake up without a bowel!!!!! So 24hrs after my endo lap I had to have another surgery I was very scared... lucky my original doctor came in on his day off to operate on me along with 3 other surgeons. After I woke up from the 2nd surgery, it came to light that I had an infection from the endo lap and there was about 300mls of pus in my stomach (I am so grateful that my bowel wasn't removed) So basically I had a kind of secondary peritonitis! I'm only 32 yrs old!! I was told I was in the 1% of people that develop such infections so I was just unlucky really!! It's taken me a year to get over the infection as I got other health problems from the surgeries... but good news is that I'm going for IVF in April :-) It still hurts to twist and bend but yoga is helping me :)

The best thing is to discuss all possibilities with your surgeon. Tell him your full medical history, but sometimes things just happen. Be prepared mentally.

Sorry Lala1739 I don't want to take over your thread, just wanted to inform 'others' of my experience.

Wow louloubell, what a horrible experience! Luckily your bowel wasn't removed!!

I guess people just react differently so surgery, so i should be open minded when i go for mine! Hopefully you both get UTD soon!!

Louloubell that would be really scary! Glad you are improving and good luck for your IVF!
And really glad others are sharing their experiences as we are all so different, I really wanted a thread like this before me op to get some more info! I think it is good for people to be aware that this isn't necessarily somthing simple eg you might not be bouncing back to work feeling great in 2-3 days as I had perhaps hoped for! I did find the surgeons and other health professionals didn't give much info on the recovery period.
Hopefully no-one is feeling more worried after reading this thread, please do know that I would happily have another surgery (and another catheter!!!) if needed on my journey to a BFP!

Hi ladies,

Thanks :-) as I said most laps are done without any probs, a friend of mine has had 3 done without ANY complications!! I had a dye test for the tubes done 3wks previously, they said I MAY have had an allergic reaction to the dye and an infection was already brewing in my tubes when I had the lap. I suppose though no-one knows for sure.... It's just a guess as to why I got the infection.

Well, sending lots of baby dust to you all!!!

Hi Girls...

Well i wish i had read up more on the laproscopy and hysteroscopy surgery as i have just had both these done.

Hysteroscopy is to look into uterus (check out if any polyps etc) and the laproscopy - 4 incisions including one in belly button to check for any endo.
Well to my utter suprize i have stage 2 - or mild endo which was removed and also had 2 x polyps inside uterus!!! At least it wasnt a waste of time having this done.

I have to say i did have mixed feelings prior to surgery and also the day afterwards as i was feeling so miserable, but then as we are endeavouring to do our 6th round of ivf/icsi/tesa i want to make sure Im all ok as up to now its been Male infertility in our case. The endo was very mild and having the polyps removed was good as this could stop implantation.
Its been 3 days and still bleeding on and off (hope im ok??) Also have to keep on resting and also wearing my compression sox. I had no idea that i would be like this - i sort of thought i would be back at work within day or 2 - well i was wrong!!! I am feeling tonnes better today though.

I wish i had done more research on this and with the after care as you really need the week off work and stay home and rest as much as you can!!

We will be seeing Specialist again soon to discuss the outcome and look at our next cycle! eeek!

As long as I get the bundle of joy (or joys) in my arms then this will all be worth it!
Take care everyone!!

x0x

PS: bye the way i had no symptoms for endo or polyps the only thing is irregular periods - but i put that down to having lots of fert drugs over the past 2 or so years!!!

Just bumping this back up I have my LAP on wednesday, havent thought too much about it untill now so best I prepare myself.

Anyone else want to add their LAP expirence?? all this info is gold to me

I was told in my pre op that I will not have a catheter but I didnt ask about a breathing tube....the nurse just said a IV line in my hand and a mask over nose/mouth.

My OP is in the arvo, so Im hoping I will be able to go home afterwards not a fan of hospitals!

Ok I got told 4 hrs after the op but I guess it depends on how you are feeling etc.

Apparently op is not untill 3pm, so its going to be a long day.

How did you all find the painful shoulder/s from the gas??

I stayed in overnight but that was only because I went private, plus my surgeon was running way behind. I think my appt was for about 2pm and I didn't end up going in until 6pm! They can never tell how long the laps are going to take because it's not until they have a look that they know how bad the endo is (or if there is any). So be prepared for a wait.

First lap I had no gas pain, only abdominal pain, 2nd time I had the gas shoulder pain really really badly!! It came on about half an hour after I woke up and I had it for about two days afterwards. I felt fine lying down because the gas bubbles just settle but as soon as I stood up.... WHAMMO!

You always have a breathing tube during the op. You can normally tell afterwards because your throat feels a bit dry and scratchy.

You'll be fine LB, just think you're that much closer to your BFP!

Funny Im not worried about the OP or what they are going to do infact Im glad they are "fixing" me - as you say one step closer to my BFP....But, Im freaking out about being knocked out!! Im the type of person who like to know whats going on and being out to it like that the unknown part freaks me ha I would rather a epi!!

Haha lady bee, i was exactly the same! I got quite nervous, but then after many reassuring word from DH, and the nurses, they were bloody good and i felt alot better, the process is fine, by the time your in the room, i think i was only in there for about 1 min before i was knocked out! Don't stress to much about it! It will all be fine!

Wee bit of shoulder pain, they gave me a couple of heat packs to take home aswell, and i got a weetbag at home which i used the first night, it was great!

I don't know if i got a breathing tube, i never felt anything afterwards, my throat was fine.

Gud luck and Relax!
