Hi there ladies,

My daughter is coming up 4 and a half & is a very bright wee girl. Am just after some learning/teaching ideas before she starts school in September (she knows her abc, lots of songs & nursery rhymes, writes her letters and numbers, can count past 30, knows her shapes and some 3 lettered words etc etc) Any other things I can teach her before school? She is always keen to try new things & activities

Thanks in advanced

At work we als do things like, days of the week and months, we write small sentences. You could get some early reader books out and see if she is interested in those.

There is a gvt funded program for that age. I'll ask at playgroup this week & get back to you as I know a lady there uses it. It's all free too.

We do small sentences also (like I'll write them & she writes them under my ones & we read them together & sounding out the letters & words). Will teach days of the week & months too, thanks.

Any other ideas ladies?

Reading and talking to her lots. Asking questions about what happened in story. Ask her what she thinks, what she would do. Just talking lots about everyday things will help her understanding and increase her vocab.

Definitely days of the week, months etc

Counting out ojbects. Have say 10 items and give her a few and ask how many are there? Do this with different amounts. Example: May a leaf and get some ladybugs. Put 6 ladybugs on and ask her how many are there. Or ask her to put 6 ladybugs on the leaf.

Ordering: Different sized objects.
          Numbers

Talk about positioning eg. Behind, under, over, through

Writing her name

Opposites (On, off) (In,out)

Telling the time can come a bit later for analogue. Start with sequencing her day (What happens in the morn, during the day, at night etc)
You could take pics of say just the morning (getting out of bed, making it,eating breakfast, have a shower, get dressed, brush teeth) and print them out and laminate. Then she can order as a game. You can also sequence other things like the growth of a flower etc.
You could start with digital time.

Social skills

Patterns with colours,animals etc.

Memory - Make up about nine different pictures. Place them all in front of her. Then say 2 pictures eg. Butterfly, ball. Then get her to repeat them back as she points to/or stands on them. Then move onto 3 picture memory etc.

Large and small ball skills

Computer skills- Using a mouse. Finding letters on the keyboard. Fisher price have some online games to find letters.

Whoops, got carried away. Keep things fun :)
