Topic: Otago Fertility Services Posted: 25 May 2011 at 10:05am |
Just wondering if any of you lovely ladies that use Otago Fertility can tell me who you go to?
Wayne Gillet or
Barbara Richards.
Ive just been on the phone with both places, it looks as though I wont be getting an appointment until august with either specialist.
They want my Dr to send through my info for a private consult but now I have to decide which one to get the info sent too.
I guess at the end of the day its all the same but would like to hear any experience you have had, good and bad.
Thanks in adavance

Hi Curlysue, I was with Barbara Richards and found her very good. We went with the public system and had 2 round of IVF.
I vaguely remember the nurses telling us that one of the Drs was going to be away in August and or september. So there may be a wait. Good luck. I know going via public, it felt like we were always waiting, but when we were on course for treatment we were looked after really well.

Hi Curlysue, I am with Wayne and so far I have been happy with him, he explains things in depth, has a positive attitude and was incredibly kind when giving me bad news after my lap (stage 3 endo). Other medical staff I have talked to spoke very highly of him as well.

Wow Rosie 8 weeks already, hope you are feeling well :)
Its Barbara thats going away, shes away during July and then again in Ausgust.
I thought that we would be able to see her in queenstown since its no different travelling there or dunedin but was told by the receptionist that no, queenstown is only for queenstown residents grrrrrr.
Yay Lala a wayne client lol, good to hear you have good things to say about him, that makes me feel slightly better . Heres hoping my Dr sorts my stuff and gets it through asap so they can call me with an appointment. I think we are going to go private but will wait and see what our plan of attack is and what we are and are not entitled to.

Hi Curlysue, the other good thing about Wayne is that my DP liked him too - being a bit of a southern man I'm not sure DP would have felt comfortable with a woman doctor!
Not sure where you are at in your journey but we are so happy we chose to go private for our first appointment - best $160 we ever spent - it reduced our waiting time for public investigations and helped reduce the frustrations of not having a plan in place! I am off to see Wayne tomorrow to discuss IVF - public vs private. Still can't quite get me head around the fact that we need IVF but guess that is just the cards we have been dealt...
I would love to hear experiences from anyone who lived in Invercargill and had IVF in Dunedin - how many times did you have to go to Dunedin during the IVF cycle, did you stay the night etc? And did you have to go to your GP at all during the cycle (we have just moved here so still using our old GP 2 hours away!)... any info appreciated!

lala - our last cycle we had to go up to pick up drugs, 2 scans, egg collection, and transfer, (would of gone up for scan @ 7 weeks, but have been having problems and ended up going to Que) we usually left early in the morning as our appointments were usually around 9 am, I would of liked to stay the night before, but DH is a hard man to get to stay away from home.
I never had to go to GP during a cycle. But had to go to Invercargill for blood test, I live 40 mins out of Invercargill, and they always had to be early in the morning too.

Curlysue - I had Barbara but I have heard good things about Wayne and to be honest I've had a couple of dealings with him myself and he was very good. Barbara can be good but I've also found her a bit one-size-fits all in her approach and I don't always feel like she has your best interests at heart - I think they both have been doing it for so long that they get a bit jaded like in any profession.
that is very odd about Queenstown - I have seen her privately through clinics in Dunedin, Queenstown and Wanaka and it hasn't mattered where we were living at the time. (for example I have done QT and Wanaka clinics when living in Southland and also a QT clinic when living in wanaka if it meant I could get in earlier).

CS I had the same sort of run in with Barbara's receptionist before I decided to just go up to ChCh. I had emailed Barbara directly about the possibility of seeing her in her Wanaka clinic if it meant i could get an ealier appt,a dn she said to talk to her receptionist about it. So i rung her and she was like - no, wanaka appts are for wanaka residents only blah blah. So then I emailed Barbara back and said thanks for her help with everything but the receptionist said I could not have an appt. I just left it at that, and then later in the week, a couple of days after I got back from my ChCh appt, I got this email from the receptionist saying that I was booked in with Barbara at the Wanaka Clinic in July. So i figure Barbara told her to sort it out and give me an appt since there was one open. I jsut think the receptionist is a bit of a @#$@#. But thats just my experience...

Hun - I completely agree - the receptionist is a complete B#@%h and has the worst patient manner - probably not the best to be dealing with people in fragile emotional states!!

Thank you all for you post, Im definately happy with my decision to go with Wayne now. I was worned by a friend who I havent seen in ages to watch Barbaras receptionist, so I was prepared but still found her rude, atleast Mary was understanding, patient and really helpful .
Now I just have to make sure my Dr has sent my info through, I really want to get the ball rolling on this, I have a day off tomorrow so might pester the nurse again to check up on the progress

Hi there, We had Wayne and he was fantastic.
Barbara did our first transfer, which didn't work, but when Wayne did our second transfer it was a much nicer experience than the first time. He was so lovely and made you feel really good about it and who knows, maybe all those good feelings helped because it worked!!! (still can't believe it some times )

Hi CS just thought I would say that I have been through both Barbara and Wayne and found them both to be very good although ultimately you will end up dealing with the nurses through most of the treatments and they are all amazing.Barbara is a bit black and white in her approach and Wayne is more of a teddybear. Good luck and just remember that whoever you go to see their end goal is the same

Hi, this is my first post on one of these chat websites. I moved to Queenstown from Auckland earlier this year so no longer have all the fertility treatments on my door step. As of yesterday I'm on the waiting list for IVF which is done in Dunedin. Is anyone else on this website going through this process at the moment?

Hi, I'm still waiting to hear when we'll be able to have the IVF, if there's a cancellation it'll be this year otherwise we may have to wait until March. Will this be your first try with IVF?

Hi, Will your IVF be publically funded? We don't meet the criteria so have to pay. Such a lot of money, I saw that Fertility Associates have an option where you pay lump sum $26,000 for 3 IVF's and if none are successful they'll refund 70%. Might be worth thinking about.
