Hi,

My first child will be starting primary school at the end of the year. She doesn't know anyone there. We will of course do school visits and so on but I'm curious as to how you helped your one transition over. Her daycare is a very nurturing, play focused centre so not very strucutred and she is used to the prompt attention of all teachers when needed. She can be a sensitive wee thing, and was quite concerned to learn that there was no sleep room there.

I've been trying to think of things that are different from daycare so that I can start explaining them to her:
* start and finish times/ number of days attending each week
* No sleep rooms!
* Probably wont be directly supervised for eating at morning tea and lunch times.

What else is good to discuss?

I would think that the daycare would start helping with the transistion? My girls homebased carer did this as they have a program that deals with kids starting school.

Definitely ask them if there is.

My girl was at kindy as well so that was the natural step to school.

Maybe do some extra school visits? we only did two but maybe your girl would benefit from more?

Cathys primary school did a dvd of one of their kids already at school showing where the playground was, where the toilets, library and hall was, where to hang up their bags. The child also came in person to the kindy and talked about the 'bells' and what they meant. We also had a parents evening at our kindy and a teacher from each of the local primary schools came and talked about new kids experiences. Most of the primary schools gave them a buddy in their class from their kindy. Maybe start hassling your kindy to liase better with your chosen primary school.
