Topic: Dairy and Soy free. Posted: 07 July 2010 at 1:25pm |
Hi there,
After struggling with a reflux baby for 9 months and being tol dit will improve I have now seen another Dr who questions the reflux diagnosis and believes my son is milk intolerant. This is something I have questioned every single time i have been to the Dr's. I strongly believe he is and am now going dairy and soy free with him.
I have scanned thru previous posts and find some food items that are sweet. Can anyone add anymore? I may introduce soy back in after a mont and see.
Nice biscuits, Salada, Sakata, kettle chips, corn cruskits, pams choc chips, Snax, Casava crisps, gingersnuts.
What do you give for breakfast and snacks as I can't find a goats milk yoghurt.
Thanks soooo much!

Pams chocolate chips are dairy free?? Exciting!!!
Have a look in the recipes thread, I think theirs a list of foods suitable to take to a childs first birthday party which are dairy free. Will give you a start anyway.

I know in Wellington you can get goats yoghurt from 'Commonsense Organics'. Maybe there's a similar option in ChCh?
I would suggest making smoothies with a mixture of goats/rice/.. milk, banana, honey, berries...)

Thanks people for the replies.
MamaT, I am only going by what people have said in other threads.
Kazzle, no I FF from birth and have been pushing milk intolerance for a while. I am going to try a month first and will head to the Paed if I am proven right. He is not severe but is getting worse the more dairy he has.
Tishy, will check out the organics shops round town. Although have made him custard tonight using formula and he seemed happy with that.

Nice biscuits are not soy free, they have soy flour in them.
So what formula are you going to give him? I'd just use that on breakfast, I use just water but now I add neocate.
Also be careful, I couldn't find a bread that does not contain soy flour. I now bake my own.
Soy is in one hell of a lot of stuff.

New world do an organic bread that is soy free.
Breakfast we always did porridge made with water, or you can do other cereal but make with rice milk. Stay away from anything that is goat or sheep, the proteins are very similar to cow's milk and are likely to still cause a reaction. Of course you can make the cereal with neocate as well (I'm guessing by trying a month you mean you are just gonna pay full price for the neocate to see first?).
Rice crackers are good too and other than that we did fruit, carrot, cucumber etc for snacks and I did baking and just used rice milk instead of cow's milk and rice bran oil instead of butter, you can't really tell the difference. Oh and check out the orgran range of stuff cos lots of theirs is dairy and soy free, including some outback crackers that are very nice.

new world do soy free bread???!!!! yayayayay have been looking for ages and cant find anythng we used bagels. u really need to talk to dietitan if u gonna start taking things out, soy is in everything and it is not always labels as such i have a heck of a time as the tiniest amount has horrid effects. the flour is used in so much and the oil can be labeled as vege oil. is really hard but u can do it. have got good at making things at home and scrap the processed food, for us just not woth the risk. the allergy nz site is great and their cookbook is my bible, has options in it. good luck and hope you get things sorted, xoxoxoxo

two_boys - I am using goats milk formula at the moment. The Dr I spoke with beliefs he may be fine on it as Frano is not that severe in his reactions. He thinks he will be better on Goats than Soy based on his symptoms etc. Who do you see as your Paed? I am not keen on seeing Rodney Ford.
I am excluding all soy for the first month and will then start being slightly more lenient with it.
Didn't even think about the bread thing!

We saw Rodney. We did see another guy at first but swapped to Rodney when he retired. Rodney really is the best person to see, he's the only child allergy specialist I know of in chch, most other paed's don't actually seem to know anything about allergies at all.
I personally wouldn't want to be on soy or goats. We were advised goat's by plunket at first and our GP told us it was a big no no and the paed reiterated that and we were told to steer clear from all soy as well. Apparently people are selling neocate on trademe so you could try to get some off there to trial as it's bloody expensive without the script.

I am just concerned as I know that Rodney has had a couple of cases against him and been close to being struck off a couple of times. That in itself doesn't sit well with me.
Hmmm, I really don't know. He seems to be drinking the goats milk quite happily which is a bonus as with the old formula he was only taking 2 bottles a day of 70mls and 1 in the night of 150mls.
