    Posted: 25 March 2011 at 11:51am
Hi there,
I am having real difficulties getting my 5 month old to drink Neocate. She has been on it for about 2 months & about 3 weeks ago started to refuse drinking it. We have tried adding vanilla essence, golden syrup & brown sugar. This generally manages to mask taste for a couple of days & then we go back to refusing to drink it. Last night was the worst ever & she only drank about 30mls at 8.30 & then grizzled & cried till about midnight from hunger I am guessing but blatantly refused to drink anything. We even tried water but as soon as bottle went near her mouth she just went into total refuse mode. I have managed to get 2 tins of Pepti Junior. She only has an intolerance to dairy protein. I am hoping it will taste a bit better for her, as I am at witts end as to what I can do & her Paed not worried about the refusing to drink because she isn't actually ill. Any one eles experiences on this matter would be appreciated.

Easy for them to say!!!!

Does bubs have reflux? Sometimes feed refusal can occur with reflux babies as they start to associate the bottle with pain.
Other than that, I haven't really got any answers, I'm sorry.
Have you tried a different bottle or teat? Maybe you might be able to trick her that way?

Have you started solids? My boy has reflux and isn't a fan of his milk. So when he's had enough milk from the bottle, I mix the rest of it with farex and get it into him that way. "Bottle in a bowl"

Good luck though. Stressful stuff.

yes, she has been diagnosed with reflux & taking 20mg of genuine losec a day. We have tried everything, plus she not very keen on solids esp if mixed with the Neocate.

Hi guest, I feel your pain, my baby has been refusing for about 3 weeks, he's just got on to neocate but luckily he will drink it. But he still screams when the bottle comes near because I think he thinks it's going to hurt him.

My boy loves solids though so when he won't drink I just give him more solids and some water from a cup, on the paeds advice. Have you tried a range of different solids? I find if he wont drink I give some solids then try again and he'll usually take it afterwards.

Would she take it from a little cup? Maybe the association is bottle=pain like erin said. My bub often has water from a little medicine cup and he likes that

How long has she been on the losec? Might need longer to work?

Are you giving the losec with pear also? Maybe if she will take that give her more pear and then try the milk

OK so I had REAL trouble with my boy. Not with Neocate but with other formulas (I guess because he was allergic) Here is what helped me take other formulas

*Small amount of golden syrup ON THE TEAT and in the bottle (which your doing)
*We switched from avent to tommee tippee closure to nature (I think he loved his brstfeeding)
*On days where he wouldn't have much, we would top up with water of with water/juice from puree apple or pear, we always froze the water from pureeing fruit so he had HEAPS of iceblocks with a mesh bag.

Feeding times become such a horrible time for them, you need to turn it into a positive. Put on some nice music, hold baby in against your chest with a book infront of you. Our bubs always drank way more while I was reading a nice story.

You can help bubs like a bottle by putting an empty bottle in the cot for them to play with, and playing games with a bottle of water. Like flicking the teat with your finger to make a sound, then their finger, then flick their lips to make the sound.

Feed small amounts often rather then large amounts.

THE OTHER THING is, if she is teething, that can REALLY put them off their bottles. You could try a frozen Neocate/apple puree mix as it soothes gums, then you know she's getting something in. Also, is anyone in the family really good at getting her to take a bottle?

My boy wouldn't drink his milk if it was a degree to cold or hot, it had to be PERFECT temperature awell!

we just had another total bottle refusal at her lunch feed. I made sure she was hungry & then she took the bottle fine, sucked about 3 times pulled off & totally refused anything. Couldn't even get her to drink some water, even 2 hours after her feed was due. She was crying for the whole 2 hours like a grizzly hungry cry, but as soon as I put the bottle near her she would either push it away or just refuse to suck or cry off it. I syringed some water in her mouth. I tried to syringe some formula but she wouldn't swallow it. She has been on losec since she was 2 months old & she takes it with a bit of pureed fruit in the morning 1/2 hour before bottle. About 3 weeks ago she just started drinking less & less & it always seems like a fight to get her to drink. Now she is just totally refusing. Very frustrating & stressful for both me & her dad. Somedays it will even get to the point that all you have to do is sit her on your lap in feeding position & she starts howling. Really knocks your confidence!

Oh poor baby. ( and mummy and daddy)

I have a good friend whose daughter refused the bottle too due to reflux. She ended up having to spoon feed her milk with farex from three months. She had her last ever bottle at six months. It sounds very similar to what you're going through.

I'll have a chat to her and see if she has any suggestions. - her 'story' is on the crying over spilt milk website.

I would definitely keep persevering with solids. Maybe even make up custard with the neocate to get the milk into her that way.

Keep going and know that things will get better.
Have you got lots of support around you? Make sure you look after yourself too.

would be nice to have some good support, but everyone round here just seems to think I am over reacting & saying stuff like 'thats just how babies are sometimes'! Does me head in sometimes. All my other friends had babies practically at the same time, & theirs are all normal perfect breasfeeding babies that they can take anywhere. We try to go anywhere & she won't sleep in the capsule & generally will cry at some point & then she won't drink very much when we are out etc etc. So it has been a very hard 5 months & only seems to be getting worse. We are going to see the GP later this arvo. Don't think he will be much help but Paed told me to get her checked. will keep you informed

Have you just introduced solids? Are those causing her to reflux, so it's not the milk it's the solids that are the cause but the milk cause she lies down to feed might make her reflux some solids back up & therefore she won't feed.

So trial feeding her upright for her bottle.

Her flap at the top of her stomach might not be working properly which is why lying down to feed milk is not helping. Just a thought anyway.

I went through a battle with my boy of pinning him down to get milk in with him screaming his head off but that was in the first few weeks of drinking it not down the track which is what makes me think it's something that's changed 3 weeks ago.

no we only introduced the solids at the start of this week to try & get some more nutrients into her. As of now 9pm she has only drank 300 mls. I managed to get 100mls into her while she was asleep. She is so grizzly & I can't get her to sleep 2nite. She hasn't been refluxing at all either. GP not worried. Says she will drink when she wants to & to just give her a bottle of water, & that babies won't starve themselves. I tried to explain to him that she won't drink anything out of the bottle, but he can't have been listening to me or something. I made up some farex with a couple of teaspoons of fruit puree & about 20mls of formula & she ate that ok & it is a lot more than she would normally have as we have only just started solids, but is seemed to curbed her hunger for a while. Just keep plodding on I spose!

Would she drink straight from a glass? I know for a while there that was what we were doing as she refused from anythign else.

I feel for you :( Nothing worse than when your bubs is obviously hungry but wont eat!

What sort of bottle are you using?

I found with normal bottles, I had advent, that he wouldn't drink it. I changed to a cheap bottle/teat like this teat and he drunk it. I tried one from the $2 shop cause I wasn't going to go to a huge expense at first.

I don't know why he liked it over the advent? Maybe the milk gets into the mouth further back than the sweet taste buds??

we have gone through every teat & bottle on the market. The only ones she will drink from are the flat type ones like nuk & mam. She drank 150mls this morning. Hoping the rest of the day is better than yesterday. Might see if I can start to teach her to drink from a cup. Anythings worth a go!

Ohhhhhh I just had a thought.

I don't give neocate full strength. He gets 7 scoops instead of 8 per 170ml of water & I worked him up to that to see his tolerance level(i started at half strength), he still won't drink it at full strength 6 months on. It does say on the container that the strength can be adjusted so maybe drop back one scoop for every bottle & see how she goes?

we are trying the pepti junior today & so far she has drank 2 bottles no probs - not all the bottle, but more than she has been. No adverse effects from the pepti junior yet either. GP can't understand why paed started her on Neocate when she only has protein intolerence, should have been on pepti junior. I suppose time will tell with the pepti.
