That really sucks 2crazykids. I'm sure the specialists working on his notes will discuss an alternative and you could always raise the issue with them.

Kazper, our baby is only 3 months younger then yours. What items cause trouble for you?

We are leaving soon for the surgery (hospital is an hour away so staying over), I gave him some colourfree paracetamol last night for a mild cough and he has a stomach and back rash now all itchy and dry! so a taste of whats to come. I'm keen to get it over with now. I'm going to say to them they can't give him anything unless I've looked at it first.
I know he won't remember the whole thing so in a weeks time we may be out the other end of it!

Oh and the other alternative to pamol is suppositories we found out and they still have the benzoates in them anyway!

The pamol we got is double strength so we give half as much, that's the best the GP could do.

OK! Well it's been just over a week since surgery and I'm glad to say it was less painlful then I thought it would be and things went pretty ok.
He had a bit of a cough leading up to it and the doc said that they'll have a breathing tube down his throat during the procedure and that he will have a sore throat. WELL he has been in a bit of pain the days after the surgery, just a sore throat though.
The actual day of surgery he handled pretty well. He was hardly even groggy afterwards, and didn't even throw up. On the trip home (that evening) he was very very itchy and got the runs but I think that's pretty normal anywho.
We got colourfree - not flavour free - pamol and ibuprofen which we gave both for 2-3 days and he didn't get much of a rash from it. He'd get more of a rash from a preservative covered dried apricot!
The anethetist and nurses were very good and listened completely to my concerns and explained everything to me. I gave them a printed sheet of what causes problems for him and they photocopied it in red and laminated it and put it in his folder! (I would recommend taking several copies though as they didn't have access to a copier until the ward)
What would have been nice though is a red band that some hospitals do to indicate allergies. Like hospital wrist bands but another red one beside it.

I still think though that it was a lot to take on board for such a wee fellow and it certainly wasn't fun! They put him to sleep via gas on my lap and I handed him over, walked downstairs, grabbed my mum, and BAWLED. It was so hard to just hand my precious kid to a surgeon. You just can't think about it too much! I said to the anethetist that I googled propofol and it had soy and egg in it. He said "it is a safe anesthetic", I said "I would be very nervous if you used it", he said "Ok that's fine".
I think he had about 5-6 different drugs go into his system during the op, anti nausea etc so I'm glad that I had the printed list.

I'm so glad it's done and dusted and he's much better now!
Kazper. He had a brachial fistula meaning a track in his neck connected to his wind pipe and opening on his neck, the size of a pin hole. Does not cause ill health but can cause problems later in life with fluid excretion.
