Any ideas on how to reduce the niff coming from my dry nappy bucket each I time open it to put another nappy in the smell of amonia makes me gag.
I'd heard about using tea tree oil but not sure what you do with it.

just a couple of drops of ti tree or lavender oil in the bottom of the bucket - or put some on a cloth if you dont want it in direct contact with your nappies. and maybe give it a wash out with some baking soda to help too in case of smell build up.
Another good idea (but does mean extra handling) is to rinse the naps by hand before putting them in the bucket. This more hygienic + helps to extend the life of the nappies. Most people don't rinse and that is ok but truth be told, the acid froom the urine gradually eats away at the fabrics & elastic which shortens the life of the nappies. I don't always rinse but try to as much as possible.
Plastic is good at retaining smells over a longish period of time so I had a brain wave the other day (how very rare!) and got someone to make me up a couple of PUL bucket liners so when it comes to washing the naps I'll throw the bucket liner in with it too, that way all the poos and wees aren't sitting on the plastic and inside the bucket liner is a piece of microfleece where I can put tea tree oil or whatever on it to help with the smells. Also means I won't have to rinse out the bucket all the time.

i think that some nappy retailers sell hanging nappy totes instead of buckets.
I have Wahmies bin liners that are fab. They have a strip of hemp inside for you to put some drops of tea tree on it. I use them with my boy in a flip up kitchen bin which is in his room. We live in a 2 storey house and I could not be bothered going up and down the stairs with a baby and an ick nappy. The smells stay in the bin, I pull the whole liner and and empty the nappies into the machine along with the liner. I have 2 so when one is in the wash the other is doing the job. Beats washing out stinky buckets all the time.
