Do you find it better to 'prepare' your bigger kids before they go to stay somewhere else without you? I'm talking just overnight, not for like a weekend or longer holiday.
The reason I ask is that our kids are going to stay at the IL's tonight and I'm not too sure about Ella.
I know they'll be thoroughly spoiled, fed tons of yummy crap and kept up way too late (As is the grandparent's prerogative) and they'll have a great time.
Ella is a bit like me, she tends to think and think about things and gets herself all freaked out about stuff if she has too much time to stew on it.
I don't want to spring it on her suddenly and freak her right out, but I also don't want her to be getting upset and talking herself out of it all day, when its meant to be a fun thing, not a huge scary big deal.
What would you do?

It really does depend on the kid.

I mention things to Hannah but don't psych her up too much about it. Just give her a warning I guess. But then she's not too worried about leaving me!

Maybe just have a talk with her and explain what is going to happen. She's old enough that she can think it over herself without having to prompt enthusiasm IYKWIM.

But you know what is best for her really... I've never even met the little one!

I'd just mention it to her, and try not to make a huge deal about it, just say something about how her and Benji are going for a sleepover, and how cool is that.  Answer any questions she has as honestly as possible.  Definitely don't spring it on her at the last minute.

i have to give jack plenty of warning about whats going to happen before hand otherwise he freaks out.

has she not been away overnight before? if yes, how did you handle it last time? perhaps tell her after lunch that she'll be going to grandparents for a night of fun with benji too?

my kids love going away from me too nikki....i'm trying not to get a complex over it
