Hi everyone.
I am thinking about fully weaning my daughter onto neocate. I have heard that it hasn't made much difference for some people. Can you please tell me of your experiences with neocate, good or bad. This is very much appreciated, thanks. I am finding this a very hard decision to make.

Hi there,
weaning her from what? Breastmilk or a different formula? It make a huge (positive) difference for my daughter, weaning her from breastmilk to Neocate at 9 months, as breastmilk had never fully agreed with her thanks to her allergy. Once on Neocate, she fed happily (she hadn't fed happily with BM, either from the breast or in a bottle), and began to gain a healthier amount of weight.
Why Neocate? I'm guessing that she has an allergy or you have reason to believe she may? So this is probably all stuff you already know, but just in case... you need a Paediatrician to decide first whether or not she qualifies for Neocate, they apply to the funding agency, then you can get a prescription for it. If she doesn't qualify then at least there's other options available for you. But talk to her Paed about it, and if it's bottle vs breast that you're considering, remember that this is your decision at the end of the day, and you'll make that armed with all the knowledge you can gather.

I love it too...we were lucky to get E sorted quickly and he's been a happy thriving boy ever since(tried Pepti but ended up on Neocate) as previous person said though you can't just go on it without a paed organising it for you.
Mum to two amazing boys!

I dont know what we would do without Neocate. We had tried everything and have a different child now. But go with what the peads say - they know what they are talking about

Yep, was a godsend with the gremlins too, for three months they screamed and refluxed and were generally miserable even with me on a dairy free, egg free, peanut free, soy free diet but as soon as we weaned them from breastmilk to Neocate they became like different babies and were actually happy!
Like Andie said tho, it only makes a difference where allergies are present. Gremlins had cows milk protein intolerance (which they have since outgrown), Maya was also a Neocate baby from 10 mths, she had cows milk protein allergy.

I started neocate after my own investigate,, i had tried every can of formula in the supermarket, including soy and goats formula after sleepless days crying, wind all day, constipation smelly poos, wheezing, runny nose she had so many side effects,, i slowly reduced by frequency of breastfeeding every one to two weeks replaced a feed with neocate, (its a lot easier on you), Now we are waiting to see a specalist in the next week, so we will hopefully get a special authory so we dont have to pay for it (its really expensive)

We were lucky not to have too much difficulty getting a funding # for the gremlins. Coz of the problems we had with Maya (she was fails to thrive, had gastric bleeding and ended up in Starship twice, the second time she stayed over a week) the paed was happy to trial the gremlins on Neocate as soon as it started becoming apparent that something wasn't right with them. But with Maya it took months of trial and error, we had to try goats (allergic) and soy (allergic) first, and it wasn't till she got so sick that she was in hospital being NG tube fed that anyone took it seriously.

Thanks for your replies everyone. I did end up putting her on neocate. She has been on it for a month now and is still very itchy but is gaining a lot more weight now. When I first posted my allergy specialist had recommended weaning her but had basically told me to cut even more out of my diet if I didn't. I am glad I made the decision to put her on neocate.
She is allergic to eggs, soy, milk, peanuts and fish. I have also been told to keep her off wheat. I gave her banana for the first time the other day and she reacted to that as well, started vomitting.

Have a look in the starting solids thread (also in this allergy section) early today I posted a list of the least likely and most likely foods to cause reactions. Bananas is on the most likely list. Doesn't mean not to give them but just helps you be aware when you do add something in.
Glad she is doing better on neocate, my boy is allergic to dairy eggs and peanuts and has been on neocate since 4 months and is thriving.

My son has been on neocate since he was 4 months old. He is now nearly 15 months old. The only problem i have with it is it stinks and it doesn't seem to put much weight on Jordy.

My Mercedes used to get hives from banana, she's OK with it now tho. Before that I didn't even know you *could* be allergic to it!
