    Posted: 08 June 2012 at 9:15am
My poor little girl has had terrible nappy rash for a few weeks now and its not getting any better, wondering if anyone has any ideas to get rid of it? Ive been changing her every two-three hours and lathering sudocrem on and also putting rosehip oil on once or twice a day but it wont go away! I cant really give her nappy free time as shes a bum shuffler dont really want her getting carpet burn as well haha.

Any ideas?

Lucas' paw paw ointment works really well for us. I tried everything when my DD had it really bad and after one application I noticed a huge difference.

Also, others in my due in thread thought their baby had nappy rash and it turned out to be thrush... maybe get it checked out?

give her nappy off time in the bath, and put baking soda in the water. i dont know anything about the rosehip oil but i would try sticking with just one treatment and yeah check it isnt thrush or something else as well.

Aww shame. I used to dip cotton/hemp/flannels in cooled camomile tea. (the purer the tea the better). Wait till she was asleep, slip a towel under her, whip nappy off, legs akimbo, and place one of the camomile wraps on her. At nappy change time, you could use some of the reserved tea as a wet wipe too. Camomile has good skin healing qualities.

Sounds a bit ludicrous but just out of interest what brand of nappies are you using on her? Perhaps try changing the brand. I previously attempted cheaper brands of nappies on my son and he ended up with his first dose of nappy rash. Very quickly changed back to using huggies. Bum off time doesn't have to be her laying on the floor. Perhaps take her outside and carry her around a bit, or sit her on your lap in the sun before putting a new nappy on. (Difficult time of year to do this I know). Have you changed the type of bath wash you use on her recently? Try limiting the amount of days she baths in bath wash. My son did end up having to visit the doctors once for nappy rash that was red raw, raised and just not getting better. He ended up being prescribed stuff called Pimafucort and it took 2 weeks for it to subside. Perhaps time for a doctors visit?

I was going to ask the same - except in my situation, I was using cloth nappies. One day we were out visiting and used disposable nappies; the nappy rash looked so much better by the end of the day

I agree, might be time for a trip to the Dr.

A bit alternative but shaking some cornflour on can help a lot, it was recommended to us by the hospital when the twins were tiny and I still do it now if they get a sore bum.

I find that sudocream isn't really a healer it just tends to be a barrier cream, so I always put on paw paw ointment, then sudocream on top to keep the ointment on the skin for as long as possible.
if you can see white spots in the redness it might be thrush. also not using wipes but just flannels or wet rags that you can then throw out. Wipes always irritate my boys.

Just been to the Dr with my little girl who has also had a rash for weeks (we've already treated for thrush as well)and he prescribed, nappy off time - as much as possible, preferably in the sun and clomazol cream with zinc and caster oil cream applied over the top. He said that if it was round raised red bumps then it is likely to be some sort of yeast infection and to expect it to take about 1 week to clear.

I hope your little girls rash clears up soon.

Yes it is raised bumps, might book her into the gp and see what they think, ill give those other little remedies a go too. I usually just put baking soda in her bath as I dont like the things they add in baby bath stuff but lately ive been using a baby mild soap its jusy essential oils really but might go back to just baking soda.

Tessie good question I changed from huggies to babylove few months back I found them better and cheaper qnd more absorbant plus I use cloth nappies too but really only part time a couple times a day. I found cheaper brands caused a bit of a rash with my little girl too like budget, pams etc so I dont think its the nappies I dont think.

Hi I had this problem recently with DD. I used micreme H under pharmicist advice and it started clearing up by that night- less angry looking. Only use under pharmacist/dr advice cos its steroid based....

ETA: My DD is nearly 2 though, just reread your post and saw your baby is still a bum shuffler so perhaps a little young for that cream?

My son had thrush as a newborn and we were prescribed with Micreme H, also Daktarin Oral Gel. I think in the end, what worked for us was Micreme H twice a day with Bepanthen in between. Consistency was key.

nappy rash is horrid when it gets bad.
I'm glad you're going to the Dr bx if it's been hanging around for a few weeks, chances are it could be slightly infected and/or fungal, and that's not going to improve without some medicated cream.

there's a couple of non-medicated things we use that seem to really help if she gets a bit irritated - the Weleda bum cream with calendula, and a medi-honey cream.

But when it gets bad, we resort to a hydro-cortison cream with an anti-fungal (pimacort I think it's called) and after a few days, with a few thin applications a day, she's fine again.

ETA: even with a bum-shuffler, you can kinda give nappy off time just by putting on some cotton knickers or thin trousers. They won't hold anything but at least they'll let lots of air get to her skin, and she can still get around on the floor!

Also don't use rosehip oil or the like on broken skin, should only be used on unbroken skin.

yes, that's a good point. if you're got to the broken skin stage, you need to stick to medicated or sterile creams ONLY, otherwise you run the risk of causing infection and more irritation. Essential oils are often too strong for baby skin especially if it's irritated already.

Great to hear Dophy! Paw paw ointment (or 'magic cream' as my 4 year old likes to call it) is a godsend in our house and we use it on grazes, chapped lips, insect bites - works a treat.

what worked for us (different things at different times):
paw paw ointment
zinc and castor oil
pinetarsol solution in a daily bath (highly recommend this one!)
Mum to 3 girls: identical twins and with a 3 year gap another girl.
