Hi I am having my first due in July.... I'm in Timaru and starting to get organised with antenatal classes, should I go Parent's centre or hospital ones?

Not many mums in here considering the high birth rate here!

Hi Flanosau, when un July are you due? I am the 30th, although hang out in August thread. I have no idea about antenatal classes, when do you need to start going?

Hey Flanosau great to see someone else in Timas Kate and I were getting lonely lol. I went to the hospital for both of my last two, I think they are just as good as each other its really just up to you. The reason I went to hospital is they show you round the maternity ward and you get to know some of the staff there, but thats about the only difference. Ask your midwife when to go she will organise it for you and get you in with a group of people all due within about 2weeks of you.

thanks fellow timaruvians! And thanks for the advice, I think I will go with the hospital one.

You never know Katep you may be early then you'll def be July mum. I imagine I'll prob be late then end up in the August thread. Am looking forward to seeing the baby at the next scan.

It's too cold here today, is summer always like this??

It is quite annoying at the moment eh I am using up the last of my winter wood for this year tonight.

So far my pregs have always been late the first was three weeks over due and the second 1 week, very frustrating cos you are so over it by then.

Are you not originally from Timas then Flanosau

hi ya no I'm not, moved here from London but originally form Australia. I've been in Timaru for less than a year with my boyf.

BIG change!!! I really miss the shopping. And the cafes. And the people. But slowly getting used to it...But I think the real secret is to get out into the surrounding area as much as possible.

Impressed with the amount of care you receive though. An MW AND an OB for free. And I guess having a kid here is good in a way as life is very easy so I won't have to worry too much about all the hassles I would have had in the UK such as trying to get from one place to another with a baby in tow.

Yeah I know the feeling when I got preg with my first I was living in the UK in Coventry and it was horrible I couldn't even get a doc to see me. The first time I had any help was when I moved back here at 25 weeks. My husband is from North Wales so he really misses the pace of things in the UK as compared to Timas. We have been back in Timas now for about 1 and a half years. Are you working here?

Sorry Keoedy it's taken so long to reply. Baby brain has really kicked in! Yes, I'm working full-time, will try to until about 38 weeks depending on how I feel. I think I'd go stir crazy if I didn;t work! I know what your hubby measn about the pace change. So you haven't had a child whilst in Timaru I guess? I'd love to get some info about what it's like at the hospital and what the rooms are like. I'm booked in for a tour but not until April.

I'm 18wk 1 day today and my BF has asked me to slow the baby down as the house is not nearly ready yet, ha ha! I ahve a scan with Dr wermeister next week, can't wait!

No both of the boys were born in Timaru I flew back here on my own whne I was 6 months preg with the first and then hubby flew over about 3weeks before he was due. We only lived in Timas though until our youngest was 3months and then moved to Tokoroa.
Heres my cell number 027 3734368 give me a text and we can get together at some stage and I will tell you everything I can remember lol.

Are you going to find out the sex? I have my 12week scan in a week n a bit looking forward to that cos that will be the first time I will knw for sure its there lol.

I've only just stumbled on this thread - hello! I know katep from the Aug thread (*waves*) and keoedy a little already but I'm originally from the UK, have lived in Chch and then Auckland until last year when we sold up and shifted here - DP was born here and we've intended to live here for a while now. Live out of town on a lifestyle block and LOVE it, although I do sometimes miss not just the shops but the longer opening times of bigger towns/cities. Don't miss life in the city though!

About antenatal classes - my mw said both are good but feedback from her ladies over time says that the hospital ones are more 'hospitalised' or 'medicalised'. As I think the whole pregnancy/birth thing has already become more of a medical problem to be dealt with than a natural process I'll be opting for the parent centre classes. Haven't done anything about it yet though. Apparently they like to have you booked by about 19 weeks.
