Hi all,

Well, I am pretty sure I should not be considering this all on my lonesome, but it appears that I am not getting any help anytime soon from a paed. And if they won't help me I need to start looking into things myself.

Jackson has reflux, but the more I observe his behaviour the more I can't help but wonder if he has a milk protein intolerance. I think intolerance over allergy as he often seems to have a sore, rumbly extended tummy but doesn't have rashes etc.

So, I am thinking of trialling another formula. But wondering if I should try soy or try an HA formula first. I'm aware I shouldn't chop and change heaps. I have some reservations about soy, but I have spoken to other people whose babies have exhibited similar behaviour and some have sworn by soy.

I want to be able to go to the paed and know I have tried a number of things before they send me off to try them and we end up caught up waiting in the system again.

Honest thoughts please? Am I being stupid to take matters into my own hands? Can trialling these formulas be a problem?

Hi, at 4 months with Spencer I took things into my own hands and paid to see a paed privately without a referal, so no not stupid to do that.

I would strongly suggest you don't give soy, if it is an allergy to the milk protein then introducing soy before 12 months can cause an allergic reaction to that as well. Also don't use goat or sheeps milk formula as the proteins are too similar and the same problem will occur. The best thing to try in the interim is the HA formula but if he does have the allergy it might not fix or even improve the problem as the proteins are still present.
If he has the allergy he will really need to be on either pepti junior or neocate both of which you need to see a paed to get funding for. You can buy them from some phamacists but the neocate costs around $85 a tin and the tins are half the size of normal formula tins.

Is it possible you could see a paed privately to speed things along?

This website has some really great info about allergies, symptoms etc. Worth a read and perhaps would give you some info to go armed with next time you see the gp as i found both plunket and a gp I saw (not my usual gp) were extremely poorly educated about allergies and gave me incorrect advise.
I actually got the most help off nutricia, before I saw the paed so it might be worth ringing and chatting to them as well. I spoke to their nutricianist.

yes, i would advise staying away from soy too - it is a common allergy and soy is in heaps of stuff that you don't even realise. That would make life more complicated when he starts on solids in a couple of months.

If you can pay for it I would call the paed your self first thing on Monday. I would suggest crying, a lot. Also as suggested in another thread, try and record Jackson with a video camera a the before bed feed as if they see him in the morning when he is not so bad, then they may not realise how bad it is.

Thanks guys.

We are going to try an HA formula. Dunno if it will help. Going to see my GP on Tuesday, and no doubt will cry... I don't think I will have to turn on the tears. We've made a video of his feed... it's distressing to watch, and I'm all upset and weepy in it. I think it is a fair portrayal of our life at the moment!

Today his feeds were bad all day. He is very constipated and his gut rumbles constantly. If we try the HA formula, at least it feels like we are doing something.

Thanks for the comments about the soy - I didn't really want to go there.

Spencer's symptoms when his allergy were picked up was ezcema and really bad constipation, he also did that back arching and screaming at feeds and vomiting constantly, even hours after a feed. I really hope you get it sorted and definitely push to see a paed. Plunket told me to put him on goats milk formula and then try soy, totally wrong advice. And the gp I saw when Spencer had been up all night screaming cos he couldn't poo told us to "just keep trying different formulas" Lucky that wasn't my normal gp otherwise I would have changed surgeries. It really annoys me how gp's and plunket are so unaware and uniformed about allergies when they are so common.

If you want to do something about the constipation in the meantime you can give lactulose. Spencer just use to have 5ml a day to start with and then adjust the amount up or down depending on consistency of poo. It shouldn't be a long term solution but might help things whilst you wait to see a paed.

Spencer got so badly constipated we (well me actually) had to give him an enema was not a very pleasant experience for me or him.

I don't know if this is off any help but when I was breastfeeding Isobelle and went dairy free, and on to Soy, her reflux just went through the roof. It was worse than dairy.
We went to the Family Centre and they gave me a tin of Karicare HA AR formula. It is brilliant, she has become so settled on it.
Lots of people have suggested Goat formula to me as it is supposed to be good for babies at risk of allergy but the Family centre, gp and plunket nurse all advised that Goats milk has the same proteins as cows milk.
If you are interested in the HA AR formula you have to mail order it but it always arrives the very next day. And I find its actually easier than having to make a visit to the supermarket. It is slightly cheaper than the HA formula at $20 a tin but with a $5 delivery charge, but that is no matter how many tins you order.
