Topic: VBAC and inducing? Posted: 23 February 2009 at 4:11pm |
Obviously the more I go overdue the more likely I am to be induced again. I dont really want to be as intervention usually leads to another section which is what i'm trying to avoid again. Midwife did an internal this morning and my cervix is still firm, so doesn't look like baby will be arriving any time soon.
I obviously make to much of a good home for my bubbies, hehe!
So just wondered if anyone has had a succesful VBAC after being induced?

Hi, I didn't go overdue with my VBAC but it was pretty clear that they were going to leave me as long as possible so as to avoid the risks of induction. It almost seems like they would prefer to c/s you again than induce, given the risks to the scar etc! They were talking at one point about using gel on me, as the safest form of induction for VBAC - if necessary.
Hope you have a safe birth, either way

They have a new induction method for VBAC's where they put a catheter in the cervix then blow it up to expand the cervix, they leave it in for either 12 or 24 hours (can't remember which). The idea is that once they take it out they can break the waters and labour will start. Was told it is 50% successful, I forgot to ask them what happens if nit successful and procedure is so new my mw didn't know much about it either.
Good luck, hope things start naturally for you.

eww sounds nasty cuppatea, lol!
They said they would do the gel once, but only very small dose. Then try and break my waters and give me some time to get going on my own if possible then onto the drip, aarrggh! Too much intervention for me. If it's going to end up like my first birth I'd rather just ceasar again, lol!

pomikiwi this is my fear aswell! I went 12 days over due with Caden before I went into labour. Then he wasnt born until 2 days later so yeah lol, hence the reason for my c/s.
Ive been told they wont induce you before a VBAC cos of the intense labour it can cause. I hope your baby arrives very soon for you and good luck for the VBAC.

When I saw the OB at the hospital before I had J, he said they would leave me to go 10 days over and only do a natural induction, ie no gel only stretch and sweep. They said so long as everything was ok they wouldn't intervene. Didn't matter as he was 10 days early so didn't have to go through it.
Hope it goes ok for you.

funny what different doctors tell you, my specialist said if i need to be induced then i would be, and that i would be almost forced to have an epidural.
although given that ive already had failed induction, im not happy to go down that road again

Hi Pomikiwi, when I had Blaire I very narrowly missed being induced via Foley's cathetar which I think someone described up the page somewhere (cathetar placed in cervix & blown up etc).
Just before I had my VBA2Cs the OB was VERY determined that if Bubs was overdue then I would be carefully induced & he was pretty bleak in saying that if that happened it was likely I would end up with a c-section.
SO! With that in mind I went down to see my midwife for a stretch & sweep. It didn't go well & she said I wasn't a very good candidate for the S & S so then she did a 1/2 hour session of acupuncture. She also gave me some pressure points to use.
I was also already using 5W, EPO & a homeopathy remedy called Pre-Birth. Midwife recommended another remedy for labour from the same range. I spent all weekend using everything to the maximum doses I was allowed plus some "help" from Hubby..... Went into labour & had Erika on my due date
I was very determined to NOT go overdue, but if I had gone over then I would have stalled my OB on the whole induction issue as everything I have read says that it should be avoided if possible as it is often a reason for c--section & also slightly increases risk of rupture. Best to have plenty of monitoring from your midwife & just let nature take its course with a little natural encouragement.
Best of luck with the VBAC & I really hope it all goes smoothly

^^ I so dont want to be induced, and i'm willing to wait another week and hopefully baby will come on it's own before then!
It's funny the different things MW's say. Mine is totally against me taking pre-birth or 5W as she said it can cause erractic contractions which isn't good with having a previous section - so who knows, lol!
I've been taking EPO and raspberry leaf tea.
Sometimes I think it would be easier to to just have another section, but then i'm sure i'd regret not knowing if I could have a VBAC or not, so i'll give it a go even if it ends up being an inductio - i think, lol.

Maybe if it gets that far down the track you can ask for a cs INSTEAD of being induced.

LOL Pomikiwi, you should tell your midwife about my birth then. 4.5 hours from FIRST pain until pushed out.... Nothing erratic about those labour pains at all they just hurt like a mofo until I got to the pushing stage & then ahhhhhh what a relief! Hahahaha

Good luck, I hope something happens before Monday. At least at the end of it you will be holding your baby and it will be all over.

Hoping that labour gets started for you before then! Fingers crossed.
BUT if it doesn't, then try positive thinking positive affirmations etc. I know it sounds silly but it really does help. Get your Hubby/support person to tell you how well you are doing throughout your labour.
You CAN do this hun!

Well I ended up getting induced and yep I had another section. Alot happier with how it all went though, I just wasn't progressing and the when they took baby out he had the cord wrapped round his neck, so maybe it was meant to be, who knows!!
But I am bummed that I'll never ever know what it's like to go into labour myself or have a vaginal birth

Most important thing is that you are happier with how it went and that you & Bubs are safe, healthy & happy

Don't be!! The c/s can be hard work to recover from but at least your girly bits haven't been torn or cut! Hey, in all seriousness, don't be too hard on yourself. A birth is a birth and they are all quite different. Just look at that little bub and remind yourself that you worked hard and have not let you or her down at all.

Interesting to see all m/w's have their different ways! Mine has said that she'll let me go 10-12 days overdue to trial labour, then if nothing happens, I'm going straight in for a c-section (my first was a failed induction and an awfully uncomfortable experience so I'm quite happy to be told that they'll skip the induction!).
I can't believe I'm saying this but it would be nice to see what labour is all about so I understand your feelings towards the whole scenario. But in the end, for the safety of everyone involved, if a c-section has to be done, then I'll be happy with that.
