My son has developed eczema pretty much all over since we started solids. About a week ago I cut right back to just feeding him fruit and veges and the really bad patches seemed to improve, but it is still all over him. I have just been reading about how if you are breastfeeding you should cut things out of your own diet too. His eczema didn't start until he started solids though - do I still need to cut things out of my own diet to try and figure out what it is? Why wouldn't he have reacted when he was exclusively breastfed?

Hope this all makes sense and this is the right forum to put it in.

Cutting back to the basic is good but it could still be a fruit or vege causing it. Spencer use to react to parsnips, even though they are a root vegetable so usually the least allergenic.
Did you introduce dairy at all? that is one of the most common allergies, wheat/gluten is also high up on the list.

This is what I would recommend, wait another week, it can take up to two to notice a difference when you remove the allergic food from the diet. If his skin is no better than restrict his solids even more, so maybe go right back to just having pears, pumpkin, kumara and rice (all are the least likely to cause a reaction) and then if he is still rashy try restricting your diet. If you need to do that I would start with dairy, have non for two weeks then reintroduce slowly and see what happens. You will need to give it at least 4 days once eating it again to see if he reacts and use the same 4 day rule when you introduce foods directly to him.
If taking out dairy makes no difference then you could try gluten, soy, egg, berries, banana, citrus fruits, nuts, seeds. (just do one at a time or you will have nothing left to eat!)

Personally as it only started when he started eating solids I would not restrict your diet just yet, but having said that if he has reacted to something in his solids and you are eating it it is conceivable that his body might now recognise it in your milk and react to it when previously he didn't (I think not that likely though).

I hope that helps a bit, and if you need it I can dig out a list of all the most likely foods to cause allergic reactions and all the least likely ones and that might help you if you are still struggling to get to the bottom of it.

Oh and i also just thought, have you changed washing powder or anything? Maybe could be something completely unrelated to food but just happened to change at the same time you introduced solids?

Thanks for all that info Especially about my diet, I thought as much (that because it's after starting solids I shouldn't need to restrict my own diet) but wasn't sure.
I am looking at things other than foods too as I'm thinking there might be something else - actually wondering if synthetic fabrics might be aggravating it more as it seems to get slightly better if he's in 100% cotton and worse if in synthetics...so hard to figure it out!

Kyle has got quite rashy and I was wondering why I then I figured out that cos it's been hotter I have been letting him hang out in just a nappy which sounds great until I realised he is commando crawling across the carpet which probably is not the softest thing next to his skin.

Talking of heat, maybe the synthetics are making him a bit sweaty and it's a heat rash related type reaction?

Mmm could be indeed, it definitely looks worse when he's hot. I've got plenty of 100% cotton stuff anyway so no hardship to keep him in that. Will have to watch out for rubbing on the carpet when he starts moving!

Yep, synthetic fabrics will aggravate eczema that's already there, and cotton is much kinder to itchy skin. What's he on, as far as solids goes? Some fruits especially, and some veges can cause reactions - for example, my son reacts to banana. Do you have a list of what the foods least likely to cause reactions are? If I tried to list them off the top of my head I'd miss a lot out, or maybe get some wrong, but I'm sure someone on here could help out! Safe ones we stick to are: Pear (lowest-allergenic of all ), pumpkin, potato, apple, spinach. I'd put kumara, courgette & marrow on that list too. Baby rice is usually fine unless you're needing to avoid wheat or gluten, but look out for dairy hidden in it if you're using any of the ones made for older babies.

We're pretty much right back to pumpkin, potato, pear, apple, kumara, the occasionally prune should it be required lol. Pretty boring diet I reckon but he doesn't seem to mind. His face is looking really good today (not rashy) so will wait a couple more days to see if it stays that way then slowly start reintroducing other things

I've been looking at pureborn organic and naturebaby, he has a couple of pureborn organic cotton outfits and they are so lovely and soft, I think I might get some more stuff from there which will be nicer on his skin.
