what is the best breast pump on the market, I couldn't get anything out with my manual medale with my daughter... well no more than a few drips lol! Not sure if it was me or the pump!!

I have never tried anything else so couldn't tell you if it was the best, but I've never had a problem with mine, it's always been very efficient. It's a Philips Avent ISIS iQ UNO electronic pump.

I'm planning on getting a Medela Swing, I think electronic is much easier to use.
The Medela ones are recommended by my mum's ward (Neonatal intensive care unit at Wellington Hospital).

Medala electronic for sure! You can hire them too, which is great cause they are pricey but found them better than anything else ( and gentle) . Found a hand held one less effective and quite sore on my hands after abit

I have a Tommy Tippee Closer to Nature manual pump and a Medela Swing (Electric). The Swing is SO much easier! The best thing for me about having an electric one is that I can express one side while I am feeding DS on the other, makes for much easier (and less time consuming) expressing.
The tommy tippee worked well in the earlier days but I wanted an electric one for going back to work part time.
I bought my Swing off TradeMe :)

I have a medela hand pump and it's really awkward to use. I never had much joy in expressing anyway other than by hand - lovely!

I have the Phillips Avent electronic too, I found it great, but I've got quite a lot of milk so expressing isn't really much of an issue. We tossed up between the Medela and the Philips at BabyCity, the lady there told us that if you are using it numerous times/day the Philips is better, they had a few Medelas returned with broken parts because they are not intended for long-term frequent use aparantly

I have a Phillips Avent manual pump, I bought it while I was pregnant thinking that I would only use it occasionally if we wanted to go out for a night and I needed to express a missed feed.
Ha ha ha.
I had to pump 3hrly when C was born to get my milk to come in while he was in the NICU and even after he was allowed to try BF I still had to pump 3hrly. I asked the hospital LC whether I needed to buy (or borrow) an electric pump and she reckoned the manual Avent would be just fine and she was right (in my case).
Perhaps you could try hiring one before you buy? You could just be one of those people that isn't able to get much milk from pumping (a couple of my friends have never had any success with pumping) and it's not exactly a small purchase if you're going to have the same issue.

I have had no personal experience, only experience with mothers in the unit I work on. We use Medela pumps. One thing with the Medela is that you can get different sized breastshield cups which can make a big difference in comfort and effectiveness.See link to information about this.
You can buy the different sizes through most baby shops, but they don't stock them, you have to ask them to order them in.
Also, I am thinking about getting a secondhand Medela pump, but buying a new breastsheild cup, for hygiene and comfort reasons.
But I have also heard good things about Avent.

I had a cheap asian import one i bought brand new off TM.. it was useless... then I bought an avent isis manual pump and it was fantastic! The medela electric one I used in hospital when Jae was 12 weeks old was too strong and made one of my nipples crack quite deeply to the point I was in tears while using it on that side (which I imagine didnt help get the milk out!).

I used the double pump Medela one in hospital. Baby was 5 weeks prem so my hubby went and bought me a pump had said to get a medela one and they sold him the Medela Mini Pump which was $199 ... I found this no where near as good as the hospital grade one I had been using which I sort of expected but found it really only had one speed which pulled quite a bit rather than the varied speed of the other one and it was really noisy which drove me mad. When I chatted to the midwife she said that the new medela swing was fab and wasnt that much more expensive than the mini plus it was quiet and had better pumping action. I reckon they were trying to get rid of the mini one and saw my hubby coming as everyone was buying the new swing one :-) I did think of hiring but to hire the big medela one (only one they had to hire)was expensive as the two cups and tubes were $99 plus weekly hire etc etc. You can pick them up quite cheaply on trade me and then just buy new breast cups for hygiene purposes I suppose.

I had a Tommee Tippee that I tried when Jack was little and a few months back with Ben. It wasn't very good, I could hand express better but got sore hands so decided to give up.
Have just recently borrowed SIL's Avent Isis and it is brilliant and I can express quite a lot (well for me anyway) in quite a short time. The max I could get with my TT was 30ml in 30mins! The Avent I got 80ml in 15min on my first try and Ben had fed alot during the night!

I also love the Medela electric ones. I just wanted to say though that there are some women who have trouble regardless of the pump. I have a friend who tried a couple of electric ones and a manual one and could never get more than a few tsps out (and that took an hour!). Maybe the letdown reflex doesn't get triggered through pumping for some women...

The Medela mini electric was great for occasional use but at 3am it sounds like a swarm of hornets in your head! I got a Pump in Style Advanced off Trade Me because it's portable & can double pump - half the time 'plugged in' was a big bonus!
Regarding milk supply, it became obvious while I was in the unit that different women get different amounts & boob size or number of pregnancies don't necessarily mean more supply! A baby is always the best at getting milk out!
That said, my bub managed latching on just fine, but got minimal milk transfer, so I expressed for 10 months and gave her milk in a bottle. I had pathetic supply so ended up taking Donperidone to increase it for the whole time I expressed. I'm really glad I did it now, though at the time it was a mission of note - bub is well & healthy & growing like a weed!!

Medela electric! my sister has a maunal and it dosent work as good check out there website and make sure that the breastshied bit is the right size I took mine in when I had my appointment with the lactation consultant who recommend me getting a slighty smaller one, you can order them from babycity.
