Do you think 5 months old is too young to get the skin prick allergy test done?

My daughter has eczema all over her body I am breastfeeding so went dairy free for a whole month but that didn't change a thing.

My Doc doesn't think that the allergy test will show anything and advised me not to do it.

Allergy testing is notoriously inaccurate prior to 12 months, but that's not to say it can't be done. My Mercedes had a RAST (blood test) at 3 weeks, Maya had RAST and skin prick testing at 9 months and so did the gremlins.
Skin prick testing is also not the best way to diagnose exczema triggers, they have a test they do called skin patch testing where they apply the substance and cover it then check it at daily intervals which gives a better indication, as does elimination diets.
The other thing to consider is whether your wee bub's exczema may be triggered by something environmental rather than something you are eating. It might be worth looking into.

We had skin prick tests done at 10 months and came back inconclusive. So we had it done again just before he turned 1 and came back with better results (well better as in we got results).

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

My Ella had an allergy skin prick test done at 4 months old and reacted to egg and cashews. I was breastfeeding and she was covered in eczema so badly they were struggling to find an area that wasn't inflamed to actually do the skin prick test. The Paediatrician wants me to get her re-checked at 3 years.

Thanks for this - Rowan's been given a script for skin sensitivity testing and I thought she was too young to get anything conclusive. Good to know I'm probably right.

Thanks for all the replies :) It has been very helpful.

I think I have managed to work out a few things she is allergic to - yeast being one of them. Hopefully we will see some improvements soon
